Sounds like some epic stuff last night, but the best thing I will see all weekend was the Robert Ellis/Phil Cook/Beau Bedford show at the Pineapple Club. They played 3 hours. Best secret show at Newport every year. And it's free. We danced with Trent Crimm from Ted Lasso. So. Much. Fun. Do not miss this set on Sunday
By the way, from the looks of all the people gathered around outside the Blues Cafe last night, they aren’t sneaking anyone in anymore.
I think you're right, but at the end during Follow Me to Virgie > Lady May, three young window girls found their way in and made a mild scene rushing through the crowd to get a spot for Lady May. Not sure how they managed it. At that point it was kind of endearing.
Window girls were being wild lol. I can’t believe that made it past that brick house of a security guard. They were wiping their finger prints off of the window with their shirts, showing their bras to the to the room and kept clanking their whole ass wine bottle they were clutching onto into the window until at one point they dropped it and spilled half of it on the window sill. And for whatever reason, it wasn’t annoying and just felt perfect for the situation lol.

What did they play
Played mostly covers. Townes, Waylen, Little Feat, Neil... played a bunch of songs for the first time. Total party. All 3 play piano and sing. Played 7 until 10:30. Dennis and Chris from DeerTick on rhythm

Damn, I’d kill to hear some Neil covers. That’s awesome
Curious to see who “tbd” is on the Bike stage in like 30min. Thinking maybe that acoustic Goose side project Orebolo (?)
And I was planning to catch the end of Backseats Lovers after Bartees but now Ballroom Thieves are on Bike then so I guess I live in the quad beer garden until 3pm
Edit: looks like Thieves are setting up at Bike now actually so who knows what’s going on

TBD was never determined… no set.
Anyone else think it feels way less crowded so far today?

No it feels equal or maybe even more crowded right now.

Really? There’s been nobody but empty blankets at the Quad Stage for the first 3 sets. I assume that’ll change for Hold Steady, but big difference from yesterday pretty early in the day.

When I got back last night, I was on cloud nine reading about the show etc., and realized that all day Childers has been getting crushed for his new video by right-wing Aldean weirdos. He played this last night:
Batiste was fun and the energy was great, but for a headliner “and friends” set, yikesss. Super underwhelming. If they had been in the 3:20pm slot, (and you shifted Goose and Isbell down,) everyone would’ve loved it

I’m a little ashamed to admit what I paid for single day tickets since the waitlist didn’t come through but incredibly I have no regrets. The Hold Steady is my wife’s favorite band, and the thought of missing them at their first Newport set was just too much to bear. They knocked it out of the park. And after that, coming back to the fort in the middle of Goose’s blistering “don’t do it” cover, I think I’ve made a new Newport core memory. Jason Isbell doesn’t disappoint, a consummate professional, and the new songs are so frigging good. Add Danielle Ponder’s fun set and I have 0 regrets. Threat of rain + kids got us to leave after 3 songs of the final set and it doesn’t sound like we made a huge mistake. Oh and my 4 year old and 7 month old were absolute champions. A long, great day!

That was as good of a Goose show as you could get with only an hour of stage time imo.
Everything I saw today was good. Hold Steady > Goose > Angel Olsen was phenomenal. Logistics continue to be crap and the way they’ve quietly oversold this fest since the pandemic really sucks. We were looking back at pictures from 2019 and earlier and it was wild to see how much more space there was.
Also I wish they’d put as much effort into curating cool moments at the actual fest instead of aftershows. I don’t know if it’s a good thing when people seem more hyped about the separately ticketed event they go to after the fest than the fest itself.
Jon Batiste & Friends was tonight’s headliner. Batiste was scheduled to perform for 1 hour and 15 minutes. He came on 5-10 minutes late and his set was cut short by 15 minutes. Jay immediately came on and said the set was ending early because of impending thunderstorms (that were supposed to plague us all day but never did). His “Friends” were Native Soul (song off of new album together) and Lauren Daigle. (A set list shows that James Taylor was also going to be a friend… but probably stayed on his yacht due to the impending storm.)
My take:
Batiste played with the same infectious energy he always does. As someone said earlier, it would have been fine for a 3:20 show on the Fort Stage. But it was entirely disappointing as a headliner. The guests were pretty underwhelming for a headliner set billed “& Friends.” Songs off the new upcoming album.
I assume that interview where he said he didn’t really have much planned to be probably the truth. I’m not sure if James Taylor was going to be a very surprise guest planned in advance and played a set on Friday when Noah canceled (taking away the surprise). Or if JT was just a last minute guest since he was around and on site. I’m going with the latter. In hindsight, he had fewer guests/friends than several other bands who played the fest. Not sure why he couldn’t even get other musicians at the festival to join him… even on When the Saints Go Marching In. (Unless they were all told to leave early before the storms.)
I know we have been spoiled with Dolly, Paul, and Joni and shouldn’t expect that every year. But I also feel like a lot of artists could have planned a more special headlining set if given rein to do so. Batiste did it before as a headliner at Newport.
I’m sure authorities put an early stop to the show. There were rumors going around today that that may be the case. Probably the right call, as some lightning was seen in the distance around 8:30.
I’m am a little disappointed with how Jay seemingly kept the information that the festival would be cut short by 15 minutes from the crowds until the set ended 15 minutes early. Jon obviously knew because his set was planned around the abridged time, meaning Jay knew as well. But a lot of people were sticking around to see who the Friends were and then there was an awful traffic jam of people and cars with everyone leaving at the exact same time. A notice in advance could have given people the chance to plan ahead when to leave and maybe helped alleviate some traffic.
