I’ve learned 2 things here. I don’t think about/ care about genre near as much as some of you. I don’t think I ever thought only new music was good., I mean maybe when I was a teenager. But I’m thinking around 19 I really started getting into classic bands and some of them are still my favorites.
We've gone over this before, but when I was finishing up high school, genres people listened to literally defined who they were socially and who mostly hung out with whom. Punks, new wavers, 2nd invasion/MTV kids, rockers, headbashers, strictly commercial, etc. I ran with weirdos and musicians, so we were on our own track listening to non-radio friendly stuff.
You think the piano work of those makes them ambient only because their music is from the 21th century? Got it
Yes exactly that. Not the fact they literally both make ambient music. Thanks.
Not solely? 3post1jack1, I think, pointed out earlier that 'classical music' spans over 400 years worth of music while most people resonate it with the Mozarts, Bachs and Beethovens.
What cross-over and influences are there then from the 90's in pop from techno?
Madonna was influenced by techno as well as other electronic genres in the 90s and tbf also going into the 00s. I'm reading that U2 had some techno or techno inspired stuff as well but I don't know that era of U2 really at all so I can't speak to it one way or the other.
In the pop charts Underworld, Orbital and The Prodigy had success in the UK and European and those are just straight up techno outfits. Maybe others too but those are just the ones I know off the top of my head.

I'll cop to it: I listen to classical. Exclusively? No. But a few times a week? Sure. It's a great soundtrack sometimes while working. It's nicely meditative while I'm trying to write. Sometimes, I'll just throw it on because I like it. I find it beautiful, moving, interesting from a technical standpoint, a great study in theory as a musician, full of little nuances that reward repeated listens...I dunno. I'm listening to music a big chunk of every day, so classical occupies a relatively smaller portion of my overall time, but it does work for me when I do listen to it. *shrug emoji*

U2's techno stuff was mostly associated with the Pop album, (everyone's heads explode) mostly remixes of those songs. That came out in '97.
This track slaps.
They also dabbled in ambient, having Eno as a fifth member, but their label made them release that album under a different name (Passengers) so it's been largely forgotten. It's great though, and predates Kid A by six years. Miss Sarajevo is on it, which is probably the main thing people know from it.

eh i wouldn't call either Underworld or the Prodigy techno

Actually yeah you're right about Prodigy my bad. Underworld I do think is though they do mix other genres of electronic in there.

Shout out for the Brian Eno U2 reference. He really found a way to bring them to life. I remember him doing an interview in the early 1980's as to why he was working with a band that really wasn't anything like anyone he's worked with before. He said they had a specific "band" sound that was otherwise getting lost in the early 1980's since so much shit all sounded the same. Though it's got nothing to do with Ambient or Techno, I think his and Daniel Lanois' production work and sounds (enocification) on Joshua Tree, Unforgettable Fire and All that You Can't Leave Behind make those albums stand out. I'm pretty sure they both worked on Actung Baby as well which is probably the next best album as far as production.

Underworld is one of the few acts where I feel like the bullshit 90's "electronica" label actually applies. Their sound is all over the place, I don't think it really fits into any of the electronic subgenres.

Yeah I love their work with U2. Lanois has some pretty nice remixes on the JT re-release from 2017.
Yeah, I remember when that came out but can't remember how much of it I listened to. So I'll go back and check some of that out. Not sure what to call what he did with Venetian Snares (quasi-ambient?) at Day for Night, but I was so glad to catch the back half of that set. I only ever saw him twice otherwise, and that was him doing French Canadian stuff at Jazz Fest in like 1989 and 1990 when he released his debut album and then came back either the next year or year after. Lanois + Eno means shit's going to be good.

I actually think techno pretty much sums up their music together with progressive house. Tho, they have downtempo, ambient house / techno, breaks also in their discography. I think you could categorise most of those in techno tho.
I remember watching this docu about Radiohead once where they talked about Jonny learning how to use analog synthesizers (like live techno acts) which was really interesting. I think they use influences of idm (see Kid A), but there's other electronic genres they use or implement. But Kid A is the most straight forward one, imo.

Not that they usually play any specific genre, but I’ll take this last opportunity to get in a Wookiefoot reference before bluegrass is gone since they sometimes play a bluegrass song or two.

Hey, even after bluegrass gets eliminated, there's nothing saying we can't post bluegrass videos in the thread for every remaining round. There are no rules, here.

since things have slowed down a bit, check out this playlist i made during the last survivor. it was intended to just be songs about gravy, but it ended up just being the UGK song "Gravy" twice:

Well in that case I'm going to post my favorite Muppet sounding blues
There's lots of cool bands and songs that ended up on new rock alternative radio. What's the worst alternative band they used to play on those stations? The Flys? Collective Soul? Smash Mouth?
The lyrics to got you where I want you may be some of the worst lyrics ever written not by GG Allin
"I think you're smart, you sweet thing. Tell me your sign, I'm dying here..."
lmfao. I guess "Yeah" was pretty bad too and puts Collective Soul up there.
