Saw Quasi earlier this year and even though I’m not a huge fan of their recorded stuff they were an insanely good live band. Janet Weiss gets to cut loose a lot more than she did in the latter Sleater-Kinney years and Sam Coomes somehow brings just as much energy with his keys playing (he even played with his feet and hands at one point??). great show for two people who sit down the whole time. Also Pinkshift is pretty good pop punk and I know Olivia Jean is a decent Third Man Records signee.

I think I might try to see Postal Service/DCFC or QOTSA on their tour to free up some of that Saturday to see that undercard. Gecs, Death Grips, Viagra Boys, PUP, 070 Shake & ICP are really high on my list.
Saturday: The Postal Service/DCFC, QOTSA, Viagra Boys, 100 Gecs, Death Grips, ICP, 070 Shake, Sleep Token, Pool Kids, Enter Shikari, Head Automatica, White Reaper
Sunday: The Cure, Ride, GY!BE, Oso Oso, Just Mustard, Cults, Nothing (will be seeing Mars Volta, & Gaslight Anthem elsewhere)

Sunday: The Cure, Ride, GY!BE, Oso Oso, Just Mustard, Cults, Nothing (will be seeing Mars Volta, & Gaslight Anthem elsewhere)
Considering we have basically the same list, I'd recommend checking out Free Throw. At the very least their closing song Two Beers In is worth stopping by for

Per email:
Here’s the list of album plays for Riot Fest 2023:
✶ THE POSTAL SERVICE – Give Up (20th Anniversary) ✶ DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – Transatlanticism (20th Anniversary) ✶ DANZIG – Danzig (Riot Fest Late Night Aftershow) ✶ THE BREEDERS – Last Splash ✶ GORILLA BISCUITS – Start Today ✶ QUICKSAND – Slip ✶ RIVAL SCHOOLS – United by Fate ✶ BRAID – Frame & Canvas
I'm very curious to see how Sleep Token is scheduled because their album is still in the top 75 of Apple Music a month after release which is unheard of for a hard rock album. So they'll draw a main stage crowd but I can't see them doing a show in broad daylight?
They're still in the top 75, while Foo Fighters and QOTSA have dropped more recent albums and aren't even that close. Yes I know streaming isn't everything and I'm not saying Sleep Token is a bigger band than those 2, but they're wayyyy underbilled.
When does the schedule normally drop for this? Was tempted to ask them directly over social media but didn't want to get le epic roasted
Not until August.
what about late night shows?
Also, do those tend to be close enough to the fest where you can see the whole headliner and still get there in time for the late night show primary act?

Late night shows typically get announced earlier in August (schedule near the end of the month). Like Lolla, aftershows start at 10 so if there’s an opener you’ll have time to get over. However, you’ll want to catch an Uber or taxi to all of them to make if you don’t want to leave early. If they have one, Empty Bottle is closest, and if you get on it you could take the 49 Western Ave bus to it; Concord is a bit further north on Western near the blue line stop. Cobra Lounge and Bottom Lounge are reasonably close in the West Loop. Reggies is pretty much a straight shot east from Douglass Park in the south loop on the border of Chinatown. Metro is way the fuck up north near Wrigley Field and is the furthest away pretty easily. Those are all typically the venues that have aftershows at them.
Should clarify that that’s mostly distance based and doesn’t account for the potential difficulty of getting a car so allow at least 30 minutes to get to the Bottle, at least an hour for Metro, 45 minutes-1 hr for everywhere else
considering Jeff at the Masquerade, RF Sat+Sun and flying back Monday if the court date ~works out like that~ and DCFC/Postal Service skips Atlanta
guess we'll find out next week lol
might...still be in for this?
Court date is on the 5th, but it's a Zoom call. Gonna call the court Wednesday or Thursday to find out when the physical court orders will be ready to be copied so I can give it to the DMV, bank, work, etc.
If it's the 5th, we're bangin. If it's like that next week, might go "heeeeeeeey mom and dad wanna let me go to Riot?"
Caroline Rose dropped from lineup. Smoking Popes as replacement.
this is a bummer, we were looking forward to them
Also not to “that guy” too hard but this lineup is, as usual, super straight white dude heavy so to replace one of the only acts on the lineup that doesn’t conform to that with Smoking Popes is kinda lame. They had plenty of time to find someone that wasn’t just one of their local Chicago acts on speed dial
To noone's surprise, an additional DCFC/TPS Chicago show was added for a week after their Riot Fest performance. However, its going to be at the Salt Shed? Would that be the smallest venue on the tour?

Just by a small margin. Mission Ballroom holds just under 4,000. Sb Bowl holds 4500. They probably couldve had it outside since that can have 5,000.

it’s to my surprise, at least
can’t think of an example where an artist has returned to a city one week after a festival they headlined and performed another show… and also announced it long before the festival happening (or selling out)

Ariana had her La tour dates a couple weeks after Coachella in 2019. But that was a rare circumstance. Pretty common in the UK since theres no radius clause for acts.

Not quite the same, but Modest Mouse announced and played a headline show at Concord (which is partially owned by Riot Fest) like a week before their headlining set in 2015.

This is one of my big gripes with this festival. It’s already a heavy straight white male dominated lineup. If it’s a last minute drop off and you just don’t have time to try and get an act that isn’t your typical punk band that fits the above criteria, I can understand, but when you still have plenty of time it is a bummer that there’s no effort out in to try and get a more diverse act to play. There are a shit ton of indie emo/punk bands that could fit right in at the festival (Remember Sports, Charly Bliss, Diet Cig, Home Is Where, Hop Along, La Luz, NNAMDI, Bartees Strange, The Beths, just to name a random handful off the top of my head in terms of undercard). Even getting more hip hop acts that also fit in with the punk culture or vibes would be welcomed. I just feel like this festival could do way better in terms of representation when booking.

I don’t think it’s that bad. There could be more representation but there’s probably more than other festivals I go to. Still under 30% and Jenny Lewis is the lone female in the top 7
