Caroline Rose dropped from lineup. Smoking Popes as replacement.
this is a bummer, we were looking forward to them
Also not to “that guy” too hard but this lineup is, as usual, super straight white dude heavy so to replace one of the only acts on the lineup that doesn’t conform to that with Smoking Popes is kinda lame. They had plenty of time to find someone that wasn’t just one of their local Chicago acts on speed dial
we talking about the same lineup here? Tegan and Sara are lgbt icons, and they’ve also got 100 Gecs, 070 Shake, Screaming Females, The Breeders, Kim Gordon, Eshu Tune, Cults, Calva Louise, Pinkshift, & fucking P-Funk. Turnstile & Death Grips have some diversity. I feel like they brought a really diverse lineup this year, though I can’t really speak to prior years.
I don’t think it’s that bad. There could be more representation but there’s probably more than other festivals I go to. Tegan & Sara The Breeders Kim Gordon Ani Difranco Screaming Females Pinkshift Olivia Jean Calva Louise Fea The Bobby Lees 100 Gecs 070 Shake Jehnny Beth Warpaint Cassyette The Dresden Dolls Cults Just Mustard
Still under 30% and Jenny Lewis is the lone female in the top 7
it’s a niche that has way worse representation issues than 30%. It part of the reason people are so excited by groups like Pinkshift & Meet Me At The Altar. They did a good job reaching outside the depths of punk to fill out the lineup diversely
As far as demographics go it’s probably on par with past festivals, but I understand the criticism as they went out of their way to book a wider variety of acts across genres this year (and arguably further into the indie world than they’ve gone in a long time) but it doesn’t look that much different. I think it’s just more egregious with Smoking Popes because they’ve played this fest a lot already. Like if you’re going to go that route at least ask Sincere Engineer or Ganser or whoever.

Theyre trying which is good at least. And you forgot about The Interrupters btw.

With Caroline Rose dropping out there are four woman-fronted bands on the lineup Sunday. Six on Saturday. Friday is better and is basically the bare minimum for what a fest should be striving for in 2023 imo.
Sunday is, even for this fest, extremely lacking in diversity, whether it’s women, lgbt representation, POC fronted acts, etc

I want to have notifications on for when the schedule gets announced but also don't really feel like reading every single tweet their social media manager writes lol

Previous schedule/aftershow announcements:
2022 - Aftershows: August 10 (Wednesday), Schedule: August 25 (Thursday) 2021 - Aftershows: August 19 (Thursday), Schedule: September 10 (Friday, but remember this was a weird year with a lot of cancellations.) 2019 - Aftershows: August 9 (Friday), Schedule: August 29 (Thursday) 2018: everything was announced like the week before the festival because blink 182 dropped out lol 2017: Aftershows: August 15 (Tuesday), Schedule: August 10 (Thursday)
so....barring Ben Gibbard spontaneously combusting it's probably safe to expect the aftershows sometime this week and aftershows around August 31.
If I wanted to see Yard Act on Sunday would that mean I had to miss part of The Cure? I'm assuming it's not walkable from the venue?
It’s not walkable but Empty Bottle is the closest venue to Douglass Park by a lot. It’s just up Western Avenue. Only leave early The Cure if you want to want to take the bus there.

Bottom Lounge is about 10 min. ride?
if you’re driving, anticipate some traffic so 25 minutes maybe? Anticipate at least 45 minutes with the time it will take to call an Uber.
It came out today! (August 8) Find the full list here. Tickets go on sale Thursday, August 10. Expect a lot of them to sell out quickly. Which ones will sell out faster? lol fuck if I know.
Where is Douglass Park?
Douglass Park is located on Chicago's west side. The festival takes place in the south half of the park, south of Ogden Avenue.
How do I get to Douglass Park?
I wrote a very long post about this which you can read here. I'm going to give the tldr here:
-If you're coming by train, take the pink line to Kedzie or California. The trains going to the festival tend to be fine but it gets very crowded after the festival ends. Consider leaving early if you don't care much about the headliner or walking to an alternate stop when getting on after leaving. Do not expect the CTA to run extra service on the pink line during Riot Fest. Be extra careful when waiting on train platforms. -If you're coming by bus, you are probably heading north/south. There are buses heading northbound on California and Kedzie (and Western if you want to chance the walk). They get very crowded after Riot Fest. Be prepared to wait. -If you're coming by car, there is some street parking available north of Ogden. You may also have luck with SpotHero. Arrive early. -If you're coming by Uber, be prepared to spend extra and wait a while.
How close are the aftershow venues to the festival?
(For the Google Map I created for this image, click here.)
As you can see, no venue is particularly close to Douglass Park. As such, you will likely have to Uber from Douglass Park to any of these venues to make an aftershow. Aragon is the furthest north; if you're going to that Danzig show you will have to leave early. The openers for the aftershows will start at 10PM and Chicago venues run late so don't worry as much about that. Including waiting for an Uber, allow yourself at least 30-45 minutes for Empty Bottle/Cobra Lounge/Bottom Lounge/Reggies, 45 minutes minimum for Concord/Chop Shop/House of Blues, and and at least an hour for Metro.
What are your Chicago recommendations?
I'm going to include space for others' recommendations.
shuck: As far as touristy attractions go, you can always have a nice time by checking out the Art Institute and Millennium Park. . For food/drinks, if you're taking the pink line to the festival you will pass through the West Loop at some point (Morgan/Clinton stops), a neighborhood now famous for its restaurants. Of course, it would be remiss of me to not mention Kuma's, the metal-themed burger restaurant and bar with a good beer selection. Gaijin, a Japanese spot that serves pretty much exclusively okonomiyaki, is my personal favorite West Loop restaurant. If you're in town earlier, Nights & Weekends is a fun bar in the West Loop that opens at 5 daily.
Where should I stay?
If you're just getting a hotel now you probably want to save yourself the hassle of finding a not-too expensive Airbnb that won't cost you a fortune in Uber rides to get to/from the festival and just get a hotel close to the train.
ok I think I covered everything let me know if I missed anything.
