I for one appreciate a return to episodic TV with an overarching narrative. I would love to see more of the two-part arcs like we saw with episodes 4-5, though. Shows like Andor have done quite well with this model.
i've been tootin' the "bring tv back" horn for a while, but the uniform excellence of the first five episodes of this season, along with all the deserved critical praise and fanfare that accompanied them, convinced me this was a big deal Prestige Television Event. but then episodes six through eight gave off big "The Mid of Us" energy.
Agreed they laid it out with each episode being a level of the game and that I end up feeling rushed because you don't sit in each section as long. With the success of the show and interviews stating the second game will be two seasons, I hope that allows them to slow the pace down some. Think it would make the series better.
the second game is also literally twice as long
Just looking at full movie cuts of Part 1 (+ Left Behind) and Part 2 (from YouTube channgel MegsBoringLife), Part 1+ is 4:10:49 while Part 2 is 8:06:51. So if we take Part 1's time and divide by nine episodes, it's about 27 mins 52 secs of game time per HBO episode. If we apply the same amount of game time to HBO episode for Part 2, that will come out to about 17-18 episodes.
So yeah, a more complicated way of saying the same thing, twice as long lol.
Of course it's not an exact translation of what happens in the game vs. the show but IMO, outside of time jumps, the events of Part 1 jump around more wildly than Part 2. The sequel felt a bit slower (not in a bad way) and the game dwelled a bit more at certain places than the first game did. This is probably due to Part 2 being a bit more cinematic and narrative heavy than Part 1 as a result of Naughty Dog honing they're story-telling craft better over time. This season does feel a bit rushed and I'd probably still feel the same way even if I never played the game but it does match how the game was laid out, for better or for worse. I do think it won't be as bad for Part 2 though since it's paced out a little longer.
I've been fascinated by Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal's rise to popularity so their two Hot Ones interviews intrigued me because of the sheer volume of views. Jenna's has been up for over a week and has nearly 10 million views and Pedro's is at 4+ million views in less than 2 days. The closet other video this season has been Bryan Cranston and he can't even touch Jenna's numbers despite being up for over a month. People really love them two.

I did a mini scroll thru the view counts over the last year or so. Looks like Tom Holland has the most views recently at 31M and Millie Bobby Brown at 23M. Seems like most people get between 2M-5M views.
Edit: The Undertaker pulling in 14M is a real surprise.

What a goddamn masterpiece. They did the best game I’ve ever played justice. I liked the way they ended this better than I liked the ending of the first game.

Amazing episode, possibly my favorite of the whole season. They didn't change a whole lot from the game on this one but it wasn't necessary, the original ending was so well done and this show did it justice.
The one thing I was a bit surprised of was not tying in Abby at all. A common complaint of TLOU 2 was making Abby the doctor's daughter felt like a retroactive change from the first game. I don't know how they could have done that but since they kept this ending the same, I could see the same complaints brewing next season (unless they plan on giving Abby a different origin and motive).
I’m definitely in the minority, but I’m definitely whelmed by the show. I think the acting is great but there’s a few narrative pieces that just feel off to me. Maybe I’m still missing info, but the whole Marlene subplot makes absolutely no sense to me. I literally thought she was dead. Plus the backstory connection is completely illogical. Also, from many episodes ago, why the fuck would you go thru Kansas City if you are traveling from Boston to Wyoming? I’ve got other thoughts and plot holes but need to let it ruminate.

I’m just along for the ride and am enjoying it very much, but it really really reads like a video game to me. Here is your mission, go fulfill it. Now you’re walking down this hall killing everyone you come across. It’s funny because my mom was just starting it when I was there a few weeks ago, and she said she couldn’t imagine it being a video game, which I think just speaks to how long it’s been since my mom played a video game.

I loved the ending because it was very frustrating (in a good way!) in terms of Character Wants vs World Need. I'm going to try and play the games before the next season comes out, which I assume will be a while from now.
Saw the finale. Really enjoyed it besides some ups and downs.
Positives:
This is the Joel I’ve been wanting. Cracking jokes, showing empathy, full on murderous rage for Ellie. I feel that’s been lacking so it was a welcome surprise even if it was the end.
They nailed all the pivotal game moments. Giraffes, ‘You’ll just come after her’, ‘okay’. THEY EVEN SHOWED JOEL AND ELLIE GETTING A LADDER.
I really enjoyed how somber the rampage was. The game felt way more action focused but that obviously won’t translate into TV. Music choice was great too.
Anyone else noticed a certain characters cameo in the surgery scene? I’ve really enjoyed how they have brought the voice actors on for roles throughout the season.
I am glad they didn’t throw in actual cameos from pivotal characters from the 2nd game in here. There needs to be enough mystery so the heavy parts from TLOU2 hit harder.
Negatives:
I wish they didn’t show the backstory to Ellie. I liked her being immune as a mystery. I know it was bound to happen but it now introduces a whole bunch of other questions: If someone pregnant just needs to be bit, why hasn’t there been other immune people in 20 years? It kind of devalues how special Ellie really is and how hard it is to replicate her which is the whole backbone to the first game.
As feared, last episode felt rushed. Wish there was more lead up to the hospital. I get the last of the game is short but the fireflies are a big deal. Throw in some more exposition to explain their reasoning.
Marlene felt random in the game and even more in the show. That small line of how she got to Utah wasn’t enough.
Overall, solid season. It could have needed some more episodes to give some of the storylines more breathing room instead of being quickly wrapped up. I’m a huge TLOU2 fan so I’m more looking forward to how they adapt that. Now bring on Succession!

Is it possible that none of those babies survived? I mean what could the rate of successful pregnancy be in that world, let alone long enough for a child to survive, get bit, and then not immediately killed?

Potentially! But now wouldn’t the fireflies have a clearer road to a vaccine ? It’ll be a whole other moral dilemma but it’s not like they wasted any time trying to kill Ellie.

Yah the moral dilemma is a weird criss cross of eugenics. Also, does anyone beyond that team that was slaughtered know about this plan? (Haven’t played the video games so please take my question as hypothetical- I can imagine some potential storylines already)

Not really. It’s not explained as a clear genetic mutation that is out there happening until it becomes a dominate trait. More like a freak chemical reaction produced in her brain. Which could certainly happen again in similar circumstances but it’s not guaranteed by any means. Even under controlled conditions replicating what occurred in Ellie could take years.
It happening out in the world would be much, much harder for a variety of reasons.
Also, so Marlene is best friends with Ellie’s mom, yet somehow Ellie is somehow growing up in a FEDRA camp and only re-meets? Marlene because her best friend runs away and becomes a firefly under Marlene?
Also, too many people taking stomach wounds and living. Joel only needed some child stitches and a bit of penicillin and was able to beast mode thru people.

I figured Marlene kept an eye on Ellie and set her up in the Fedra system since you can't really bring a toddler around when doing firefly terrorist shit.
After I saw one quick shot in the preview for this episode I meant to claim "Ellie is gonna be a daywalker!! Ellie is blade" and that her mom would be bit while pregnant/giving birth. I liked that reveal.
