I just watched the first 3 episodes back to back to back. I never played the game so I didn't know what to expect. The first two episodes seemed pretty standard but very well done for world building and back story.
E3 was so amazing on so many levels. Bill and Frank are a love story for the ages. However the one thing that really sticks with me from e3 is Ellie never got a chance to check if there was ammo in that pistol. I know its the same one Frank frank checked during the raid but can we safely assume it's still loaded? this seems like the sort of thing that could lead to sadness later on.

One thing I thought was a little silly was how Bill was just standing there in the middle of the street during the raid. He seems like a smart enough survivor dude to take cover, especially with a rifle like that.

True but I do believe that he also understands shock and awe and the explosions, flame throwers, and electric fence did most of the work while he picked off the others who were likely scared and surround by chaos.

if that was his first legitimate threat since Frank showed up, it would make sense that in ten years he might have forgot some tactical ideals and just went feral to protect his boi

Nope. Not buying it. It’s the one tiny flaw with this episode. And it in no way takes away from the complete and utter beauty of the storyline. But he would not have stood out there like that. A prepper never forgets. I know one. They are nuts. But if this shit goes down for real, I’m showing up at their house. (they will probably shoot me)
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

My first thought was that but then the more I think about it, it seems like such a common troupe to use just so he has an excuse to get shot at. When I first heard the shots, I immediately thought he would be on a roof sniping people out because they really overstressed how much of a prepper he is. We get to finally see him in combat but instead of an elite post apocalyptic killer, he’s just out shooting randomly. Kind of screamed TWD. He’s clearly still a good prepper because he routinely has those booby traps ready to go so to see him shooting all Willy Nilly seems a bit too much.

This is where I went with it too. Bill had a plan locked in for when the world went to crap, and Frank disrupted everything about it.

And Bill was shot in part because he was distracted by Frank being in harms way. He was holding his own and was shot when he turned away from the threat to tell Frank to get back inside. I think that threatened sacrifice of his life was not only meant to be another example of the depth of his love for Frank, but was a foreshadowing for what was to come.

Agreed with everyone that the episode was phenomenal. Offerman was great and props to Murray Bartlett. I only know him from this and as Armond in White Lotus. The two roles couldn't be more different, and he nailed both.
If you watched Tales of the City, he also played a similar character in there (similar to this, not White Lotus). But agreed about nailing both!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I'm just saying, if dude is maintaining LP flame fences, trip wire shotgun traps, video surveillance, etc. there's no way he didn't have pre-established sniper nests around the neighborhood and defensive positioning plan(s).
it's trivial i guess but really seemed to silly to me and the wife that this ultra-prepper forgets very basic tactics. It would have been more logical and probably more emotionally impactful if he did have a good, safe position that he leaves because Frank comes out and gets in harms way.

Or that the trip wires and flame fences aren't running properly because he forgot to maintain them after achieving a level of comfort and security with Frank. That would then lead to the raiders getting through the fences and which leads to Bill running outside and firing off everywhere since he doesn't care about the basics anymore and just wants to keep Frank safe. But, it's television I guess so that would be too much tension when the audience needs to take comfort that Bill/Frank were never in any real danger.

I dunno. I tend to give at least some leeway in the realm of logic on a show where mushrooms are growing out of people's faces and robbing them of their human faculties.

I also buy that he was a bit softened from years of happy relationship and so slipped up. Also could see him instantly remembering the Joel warning about some day raiders are to come for you both.
That combined with what he says to Frank about "I was never scared before you". He made a mistake and wasn't as hardened.
We see a transformation of Bill. No longer eating alone in the bunker, being entertained by clicker traps. By the end of the episode they have a home. Pictures, lights plants. So he's definitely been changing over time and the bill we meet at the beginning is not the bill who ran out to protect. Even if dumb/a mistake.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
