I almost chose fries because of the greater variety, but at the end of the day if someone asks if I want fries or tots with my burger, I will choose tots.

when i'm at a restaurant and don't realize tots are an option and the server asks "do you want fries or tots with that"
I will always choose tots. Now if onions rings are an option...especially good onion rings; the flaky ones, not the weird batter like at Burger King (even those are better than their fries though).

agreed. onion rings have the highest risk/reward ratio for sure. great rings are hard to beat, bad rings are really bad. i can shove a few mid french fries in my mouth and be fine, but i don't even want to taste a bad onion ring.

Tots are... tots. Fries can be waffle, steak, thin cut, curly, etc. Fries have a much higher ceiling. Any loading that you can do to tots, you can do to fries. Also fries have poutine. I've had tater tot poutine and it doesn't hit the same because you can't pick up tots without getting your fingers all covered in gravy

maybe a controversial opinion but i'm not real big on dumping any kind of stuff on top of fries and tots. i like to eat fries and tots with my fingers and dip them in things, i don't want the sauces and stuff on there already.
note while i'm professing a lot of tot love in this thread, i also really really really love french fries. i love all kinds of fries, all the types you listed.
