There’s a reason why people keep throwing names like Sade, Talking Heads, Rihanna at Coachella compared to other fests. They have proven to have a higher standard of top quality. It’s easy to see both arguments.
Some of the Coachella RARE GETS had mixed results with crowd turnout. 2016 had 2 rare headliners(LCD & GNR) but it was Calvin who pulled the biggest crowd. No sure how ACDC or Frank did crowd-wise. We won't even discuss Blur-Roses in 2013. Even something like Replacements didn't have a crowd that reflected the cost to bring them in.

Crazy thought but I also think sometimes Goldenvoice just books bands that they like.
18 arena and festival opportunities to see Lana (23 worldwide) in 2023 33 arena and festival opportunities to see Tyler (53 worldwide) in 2022 30 arena and festival opportunities to see Dua (91 worldwide) in 2022
Compared to, if you are a fan of any of 2023's headliners, you had
10 sold out arena-only opportunities to see Blackpink in 2023 (63 worldwide) 22 sold out stadium-only opportunities to see Bad Bunny (79 worldwide) in 2022 for historic resale value 0 opportunities to see Frank Ocean since 2017
Yeah! If you weren't glued to tour dates and didn't fly to one of the "opportunities" to see Lana this year then that's your fault, you dumb bitch! /s

Also, doesn't it just suck when an artist's tour goes through an area then when they come back the next year, literally nobody buys tickets again because everybody already saw them? What a shame! /s
Weren’t all of you bitching about the headliners last year when they got leaked? And now you’re all saying they’re great picks?
And no mention of the four-five headline quality acts that ended up at the festival? Gorillaz, chem bros, bjork, Calvin, blink 182? Hell even Burna boy played a baseball stadium last time he was in my city.
Lana and Tyler are both heavily acclaimed generational artists with large followings and influence. I think the third is going to be someone the size of Rihanna or The Rolling Stones or something. Taylor is out

Lets not forget that they sold out Stagecoach for the first time 6 months early by getting the one act that draws and makes people spend thousands of dollars. So the "we have to go" thing certainly came into play there.
Timings wrong. They wouldnt have announced that show right now if that was the move. I mean I wont be shocked when they add more shows though.
Harry Styles just made $600 mil on his last tour. Where is he not relevant. It was the first date of the album cycle so they got the timing perfect for that. Why not also mention the almost hads to boot. Sabbath, The Stones, Velvet Underground, Cocteau Twins.
So did you take issue with FYF when that was happening?
What year did FYF have the same headliners as Coachella???

365 days ago everyone was still trying to nail down the last 2 headliners and the conversation was about if Bad Bunny would "take a pay cut" and play even though he said he was taking 2023 off except for a few "sporadic commitments" and Blackpink was also floated around as someone who would be bumped up to HL but also equally seen as a sub.

LCD did both in 2016
Thanks. The rare crossover between SoCal GV Festivals over the past decade plus. I still think it would be stupid to have one of your headliners for Coachella be the same artist that plays another SoCal festival every year. No issues if he is a Sub or on the line up but it would be a big disappointment and wouldn't make a ton of strategic sense to have him as a headliner.
Even though Tyler has been around for a long time, his fanbase is still actively growing with each album. Flower Boy -> Igor -> CMIYGL has seen him spike beyond what anyone thought he'd reach. His core fans are his core fans for sure, but I think there's a lot of people who didn't gravitate to him until one of his last 3 releases
I think his fan base was mostly flat from Igor to CMIYGL. Both had basically identical first week sales and Igor has sold more overall.

the venues he played is the biggest change. went from selling out large theaters and small arenas to selling out multiple nights at full size arenas and headlined a few festivals since. also camp flog gnaw sold like 40k tix in an hour due to name recognition alone. Tyler is massive now despite the lack of real radio and chart success

This, plus the trade-off of crowd size vs selling tickets to folks who might not otherwise have gone.

I believe NYC was the only city he did multiple arena shows. CMIYGL was a bigger tour in general though.

Coldplay would be the randomest headliner ever.
They havent played since 2005. Thats the longest stretch out of any headliner not performing again when it comes to active artists.
But still. It’s been decades since they put out a good record. But they put on a good show I guess 🤷♂️

I genuinely felt bad for LCD for how bad that crowd thinned out. You could literally walk all the way to the rail during the last 30 minutes of their set. And they were great
There’s nothing random about that at all. They’ve been a stadium band for at least 15 years and are the right amount of nostalgic for the current Coachella audience. Their cool factor is gone & they’re seemingly on tour forever, so there’s no mysticism if they were to be booked. But if they show up on the lineup, it’s one of those “of fucking course” obvious choices.
