Some of the Coachella RARE GETS had mixed results with crowd turnout. 2016 had 2 rare headliners(LCD & GNR) but it was Calvin who pulled the biggest crowd. No sure how ACDC or Frank did crowd-wise. We won't even discuss Blur-Roses in 2013. Even something like Replacements didn't have a crowd that reflected the cost to bring them in.
I genuinely felt bad for LCD for how bad that crowd thinned out. You could literally walk all the way to the rail during the last 30 minutes of their set. And they were great
The crowd that was there was really into it though. Better than what Gorillaz and Vince Staples got hit with. The headliner with the thin crowd is always better than the acts before the headliner getting a full crowd that doesn’t give a fuck about them.
There’s nothing random about that at all. They’ve been a stadium band for at least 15 years and are the right amount of nostalgic for the current Coachella audience. Their cool factor is gone & they’re seemingly on tour forever, so there’s no mysticism if they were to be booked. But if they show up on the lineup, it’s one of those “of fucking course” obvious choices.
Fair enough. I’ve heard great things about their stadium shows but I just don’t see Coldplay being a deciding factor to buy tickets. But what do I know!
Even though Tyler has been around for a long time, his fanbase is still actively growing with each album. Flower Boy -> Igor -> CMIYGL has seen him spike beyond what anyone thought he'd reach. His core fans are his core fans for sure, but I think there's a lot of people who didn't gravitate to him until one of his last 3 releases
I think his fan base was mostly flat from Igor to CMIYGL. Both had basically identical first week sales and Igor has sold more overall.
Been steadily climbing for a while. This is just for Spotify followers but his other metrics are pretty much identical to this.

Not sure if unfollowing really matters, if someone went through the effort to follow an artist on Spotify then they should be considered a "fan". I get what you're saying that this may match up with the increased user base of Spotify altogether but this increase is still shared among other platforms like I mentioned but it's certainly a smaller number than the other headliners being discussed here.
With that said, looking at the numbers you could make an argument that Tyler the Creator is more popular than Frank Ocean right now. Sure, I get there's the rareness factor and critical acclaim behind Frank but if we're talking sheer popularity, it might be Tyler > Frank.

Following an artist likely means you were a fan at some point in time. We’ve seen plenty of examples of big artists fan bases getting smaller and I doubt their Spotify followers went down. Not saying that’s what is happening with Tyler, just that these numbers on their own don’t really say much. For more context you’d have to look at his follows as a percentage of the total follows and follows as a percent of users.
A much as I love SZA, she's the one headliner that I don't want in 2024. Don't get me wrong, if she is there, I WILL be at that set and have a fantastic time. But she's played SoCal so much already his year. I'd like a breather, unless a new album is already ready to come out soon, which is HIGHLY unlikely.
I feel like all recent Coachella headliners have had a unique show planned for the festival. The “rarity” is kind of baked in.
This is one of the biggest reasons why I don't think Taylor is playing. I don't see her doing a unique show like that in the middle of her Eras tour.
that's what I was aiming for with my Taylor Swift unplugged idea - I still maintain that it would be incredibly cool and unique if she were to do that, though realistically a festival audience with a large chunk of folks who aren't Swift fans would probably be disappointed lol
They havent played since 2005. Thats the longest stretch out of any headliner not performing again when it comes to active artists.
But still. It’s been decades since they put out a good record. But they put on a good show I guess 🤷♂️
Everyday Life was a pretty solid attempt at a throwback. Arabesque is classic Coldplay. But that album didn't do particularly well so they reverted back to the pop sound quickly.

Let's get her back next album cycle.
Yea, after Prima announced both Lana and SZA on the top my guess is Coach booked Lana and passed on SZA. Having the two of them topping days as they’re both about to embark on festival tours feels more like a LiveNation lineup than Coachella.
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide

Right. Same as The Stones, U2, McCartney etc. but it doesnt matter. And yes, Coldplay put on a really good show which is something that people would def enjoy on the polo fields if that was the case.
While I strongly agree Taylor Swift should do the solo acoustic guitar and piano thing as her next show immediately after the Eras Tour, it doesn't make sense as a Coachella headlining set in and of itself. People are going to expect the big blowout spectacle if/when she does Coachella (and to the same extent Glastonbury).

it's just a matter of time with SZA, and I could really see them waiting to kick off the next album cycle for her to make it a bit more special.
I believe it was her and for sure Kali Uchis, but around 2017-2018, they each had around 10 SoCal shows for AEG, including Coachella, while AEG imposed major radius clauses due to the threat of "oversaturation". rules for thee and not for me...

Will Lana Del Rey double the size of her daisy crown and order 2 custom tie-dye dresses?
I am a fan and seen her twice. Im sure she will live debut material and have notable guests but im not totally seeing how her show will be earth shatteringly different like other headliners have done ONLY on the polo grounds.
Is Tyler still a better choice than NSYNC when it comes to WOW Headline factor? Has the dust settled after the selective memory Britney book?

Seeing the comparison of Tyler vs Dua and Lana I would not call those Spotify follower numbers terribly compelling for him. He's basically just a little ahead of where Lana was when she was a sub, and he hasn't had any sudden bursts of new followers like the others. If Spotify followers are actually meaningful as far as headlining, that makes him look pretty weak (and makes Lana look pretty good; that burst this year is surprising to me given her last few albums haven't taken off in terms of track listen counts the way NFR and earlier albums did).

FWIW, his numbers are higher than Frank’s.
Tyler's released three albums since Frank's last one, if his numbers weren't higher that would be even more damning to me. And we can debate whether Tyler's recent shows/fests should affect whether he's a headliner, but it's undeniable that Frank's rarity gave him a huge bump. Way more people bought tickets just for Frank than would buy tickets just for Tyler.
Damn flights to lax from Florida are only $218 nonstop, this is my first coachella and I was expecting it to be a lot more expensive. Already got my waitlist ticket, im guessing the real cost is gonna be my rental car, temporary camping equipment I get on the way, and food
