I hope the RATM optimism comes through, but I’m worried about Timmy C’s cancer.
Fuck, didn't know about this. Wishing him the best in his battle. Rage are clearly penciled in for 2024, but this makes me think they are gonna have a backup option ready to go if his condition worsens.
I’m going to guess the 90s electronic acts were more of a fluke this year than anything and isn’t going to happen next year. That being said obviously Basement Jaxx is a lock.

I've been lurking this board since 2020 and finally decided to make an account. I post on Reddit fairly often!
Disclaimer: Headliners are overrated. None of the best acts this year were headliners and this was a 10/10 Coachella. But since guessing is fun...
Friday: RATM (2024 as an election year is too perfect). But after the quality of this year's sub-headliners, you have to do better than RTJ! Saturday: Dua Lipa Sunday: Rihanna (I strongly believe she was all set for 2023 before the pregnancy. Don't be surprised if GV does the Beyonce thing and leaks this way in advance to drum up hype) Returning to the Desert (Saturday Closer): Kaskade
If Olivia Rodrigo drops another album that is even half as successful as her first project, I think she's a lock for a sub-slot.

From the small sample of "Returning to the Desert" acts we've seen, it's been acts who were influential to the festival but don't generate the press buzz they used to. SHM kicked off the real EDM explosion and then broke up shortly after, while Calvin was the only EDM headliner. I guess Kaskade or Skrillex solo could fit the bill, but I feel someone like Odezsa is still too of-the-moment for that designation. (on that note, I'm still not sure I've ever actually heard an Odesza song in my life)

I think it’s mostly just Coachella alumni who need headliner-size font. The fact it’s been two EDM artists so far has mostly been a coincidence IMO.
Odds that next year we get another round of "big" subs again?
Very high. Once you give special billing like that one year, it’s pretty hard to take it back. Now that they’ve done it once, others will start asking for the same.
That said, I don’t see it continuing to be former headliners. I don’t think that’s sustainable.

We got lucky this year. Bad Bunny personally asked for Gorillaz. Frank Ocean personally asked for Bjork. Rosalia felt like a normal sub booking at the time but absolutely crushed it. So let's see how next year's headliner's feel. But given how successful I assume this year was, I think GV will keep swinging for the fences.

The whole "headliners requesting their openers" thing this year was pretty interesting...also with the whole Frank booting the act who was originally going to be before him (it wasn't SZA like some people have been saying)...really curious how those conversations went down.

I literally need Basement Jaxx now, and will be thoroughly disappointed if they're not on the lineup in January.

I'd say very high. It's gonna be hard to put that genie back in the bottle. Plus we know that it's never been a money issue for Coachella, but an issue with getting artists the billing they want. Seems like the big font subs and Returning to the Desert have worked well so I don't see what they'd get rid of it now.
