Agreed. Most of us don't want Doja, but if they legit offered her a contract and took it away just as fast, that's sloppy business. Especially if she actually signed the agreement. Even asking someone to adjust their billing, if already agreed upon, is pretty crappy. I think they're a little too cocky tbh. If it weren't for their unique, beautiful location, Coachella would be in danger of losing a lot of luster.
I also feel like they need another iconic performance, soon, to draw in the younger people. For me and people around my age, it was Dre & Snoop/Tupac hologram, for people younger it was Beyonce. Other festivals will catch up in the next 5 years or so imo.
Other festivals are only falling further behind though
Lollapalooza added 20k capacity last year and had a hard sellout for the first time in ages. They've found a fresh footing coming out of the pandemic with more international focus. Bonnaroo had a rebound last year. WWWY is still surprisingly an instant sellout 3 years on.
I won't go fest by fest but it's simply untrue to say that other festivals are falling further behind. It's a mix as always but if anything the premier ones have been gaining ground.

no they haven’t, please be serious. They’re rebounding in a nice way financially, which is well and good. But Coachella is lapping the field in every metric — financial, attendance, cultural cachet, and quality of experience.
New theory: LDR confirmed herself before Coachella could replace her or bump her down.
if we're running with the "delay is due to a big booking and none of the previously booked headliners/RTTD are agreeing to be moved down" theory then I'm buying stock in this take lol

Lolla Booking 3 kpop acts and spreading them out is a no brainer for a city festival that sells single days. They finally caught up in the regard of doing something Coach did years before them and these people finally woke up. Wwwy in year 3 is already recycling acts from year 1 and the album play format is the only thing that makes it seem fresh at all.

Book notoriously flakey Frank Ocean, bury him publicly after the predictable happens
Become seemingly incapable of ever starting a headlining set on time
Release schedules as late as the day of arrival, all while the cost to attend goes up, up and up and resale value sinks.
One of these days artists and fans aren't going to be so accommodating and other festivals will take advantage. This stuff never happens overnight, but I fear this festival is really starting to show the impacts of mixing hubris with neglect.
honestly reading this back again these are very minor infractions in the grand scheme of things... The big wow moments this festival has had the past 3 decades absolutely outweighs the fuck ups. I blame Frank Ocean for acting like Frank Ocean.
must suck to be a small festival and have to keep delaying your lineup cause paul tollett has gone crazy with power and is trying to reanimate the corpse of kurt cobain for a nirvana rttd slot

Pure speculation/tin foil hat theory here…
I know there’s been speculation if Coachella were going to do something big or special for their 25th year (which is this year). I was always of the opinion that they probably treat every year as “special” and they have a hard enough time getting together a lineup as is so doing something more grand is probably out of the question.
But then I noticed a trend on some of these names that have been coming out, from a random guy on Reddit saying Living Legends are playing, that Pixies started following Coachella, speculation on The Prodigy since they might be at Ultra, names like Justice, Skepta and others. Names that are a bit unexpected at today’s Coachella, unless…
Maybe their way of celebrating 25 years won’t be by going “bigger” but rather booking more throwbacks that are Coachella alumni? I recall them featuring Richie Hawtin a couple of years ago highlighting the amount of times he’s been at Coachella and perhaps they’ll do that again but more like “it’s been 25 years and here are some artists who’ve been with us during that time”. Justice has a history with Coachella, The Prodigy are from Coachella’s first few years, Living Legends are… well… living legends of Cali underground hip-hop. My guess on Resonate Suwanee’s unannounced artist is Beats Antique and they fit this mold. There are also a few other artists I’ve heard are playing that I can’t share but certainly apart of Coachella’s history. Hell, even Tyler works for this.
I dunno, just a random thought I had yesterday and seeing the Skepta talk made me think of this again. Obviously I wouldn’t expect a ton of throwbacks on the lineup this year but I wouldn’t be too surprised if there were more than usual this year if they’re trying to do something like this.

Plus, most festival attendees have no idea about most of these things at all. Only us dweebs know about the tentative MCR booking at all, or the aborted 2019 Kanye booking. The biggest fiasco on social media was Frank's flub, which just made people mad at Frank for a week. No one is looking at this festival's posters and thinking, "You know, I really love this lineup, but I don't think I'm gonna go cause I don't like how late they release their set times." (which is not a recent Coachella thing anyway)

if we're re-animating corpses I demand Bowie and Michael Jackson and Prince all 3 days
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Yeezus 808s The Life Of Pablo Graduation College Dropout Donda Ye Late Registration Donda 2 Vultures (in it’s current state) Jesus Is King
donda 2 is actually not bad it’s just kinda unfocused and unfinished but some of the songs he bothered to finish were solid and some of the others had potential

Roger Waters doing The Wall confirmed
Give me Freestyle Fellowship and Hieroglyphics and I’m in.
I know why people assume it’s lana that would be the holdup but is doja cat not the obvious act to give the boot?
Could be any of the three rumored headliners. But the real issue if one is getting bumped to RTTD might be that you also have a sub getting moved to 3rd, a 3rd moving to 4th, 4th to 5th, and so on. And I’m guessing there’s a lot of negotiating because how they get billed at Coachella might impact how they get billed at other festivals they signed on for. For example, if say The Killers were the original RTTD act and get bumped to a sub. Yet Peso Pluma is also a sub. That may cause issues at Gov Ball with The Killers rumored as being a headliner and Peso Pluma rumored as a sub.

I wonder if there's a common assumption that is mistaken regarding acts like Tyler. Yeah, if you live in LA you can see him pretty easily and regularly, but on the other hand if you live in LA the effort to attend Coachella is much lower than anywhere else. Getting people to fly cross country for a Blackpink concert is one thing, but getting people who live in LA to drive 2 hours out to the desert is an easier task. Sure, maybe they've seen Tyler before, but he's got a lot of really dedicated fans especially concentrated in the LA area.
Combined with the fact that a lot of people consider Coachella to be one of those "I want to do it at least once" sort of things, grabbing one of the most popular LA-specific artists seems like a great idea, even if the market would otherwise be considered saturated. You just have to push an extra few thousand people who vague would like to go to Coachella across the line to make it work.

This. Obviously she should be the one to go if some other marquee headliner came through. But would they just cut her at a loss completely from the lineup aka MCR?
I’m curious as to the situation with The Killers (if they are in play). Are they locked in for the RTTD slot? If so, are they making noise to be bumped up? Brandon Flowers said after the new year they would be announcing their Hot Fuss shows (in the US), and all this seems to point is there is a holdup with being involved with possibly Coachella delaying the Killers announcement.
