I know there’s been speculation if Coachella were going to do something big or special for their 25th year (which is this year). I was always of the opinion that they probably treat every year as “special” and they have a hard enough time getting together a lineup as is so doing something more grand is probably out of the question.
But then I noticed a trend on some of these names that have been coming out, from a random guy on Reddit saying Living Legends are playing, that Pixies started following Coachella, speculation on The Prodigy since they might be at Ultra, names like Justice, Skepta and others. Names that are a bit unexpected at today’s Coachella, unless…
Maybe their way of celebrating 25 years won’t be by going “bigger” but rather booking more throwbacks that are Coachella alumni? I recall them featuring Richie Hawtin a couple of years ago highlighting the amount of times he’s been at Coachella and perhaps they’ll do that again but more like “it’s been 25 years and here are some artists who’ve been with us during that time”. Justice has a history with Coachella, The Prodigy are from Coachella’s first few years, Living Legends are… well… living legends of Cali underground hip-hop. My guess on Resonate Suwanee’s unannounced artist is Beats Antique and they fit this mold. There are also a few other artists I’ve heard are playing that I can’t share but certainly apart of Coachella’s history. Hell, even Tyler works for this.
I dunno, just a random thought I had yesterday and seeing the Skepta talk made me think of this again. Obviously I wouldn’t expect a ton of throwbacks on the lineup this year but I wouldn’t be too surprised if there were more than usual this year if they’re trying to do something like this.
That would be rad, however, wouldn't we be hearing about acts that have more of a synonymous association with the fest? Sure, acts like Skepta and Justice have played the fest before but they, in no way, are associated with it. I know Coachella sure loves its own history. It's very apparent in the doc that they produced. A lot of these acts mentioned seem like any other returning booking. If the rumors were acts that did somehting first like Kaskade (whatever first he's credited with), or a major iconic booking (like Madonna playing the Sahara), it just doesn't really make sense. You know what i mean?

The names you’re listing may be a bit too big than what they may shoot for. Like no way would I expect them to book Madonna again for something like this but I would guessing it would be more of a slight nod to throwbacks rather than trying to get the MAJOR artists like that.
And I’d argue Justice belongs here. Not as a “big” moments but anybody who has played Coachella that many times is notable.
They went through a phase 10 years ago where their setlists would have one or zero from LYSF and I thought they were ready to bury it, but last few years they've thankfully been bringing them back.
Out of all the Coachella memories I have, one of my favorites is being right up front on the right side in the half-empty Mojave for Godspeed, tripping hard balls and loving the slow build for World Police, and I looked over at the Sahara where Guetta was playing and there was a massive, pulsating throng of people spilling out of the tent, all jumping up and down with the lasers and gaudy light show and in my drug-addled state of mind just feeling sorry for everyone over there to the point where I started crying. The contrast between the two just sent me into a tailspin. Also arguing with my whole group because they all wanted to leave early to try and get up close for Radiohead and I wanted to stay til the end of Godspeed.
If you do it that way, you can start teasing/hyping by posting old clips of past performances. But that only works with sets that people actually remember or have heard about. Nobody gives a shit about a random Skepta set, but they sure do remember Major Lazer or Gesa in the Mojave. You know what I mean?

I made my friend stay until the very end of their set with the turning down the amps feeding back at Aint No Picnic and because of that we were stuck in the parking lot for 2 hours.

I had a similar experience, seeing them at my first Coachella coming down from psychedelics that I was still pretty new to. I'd tried to get into them as part of my effort to be a music hipster but it never clicked until that set which blew my mind open. It was so incredibly beautiful and intense in a way I couldn't have imagined before I decided to wander into the tent
Seeing GYBE in 2012 is still one of my favorite memories from the festival. So beautiful and yet intense at the same time. My recording of weekend 1 (didn't record weekend 2) is up on Archive: archive.org/details/gybe2012-04-14.aud.flac16
Lots of critics regard GV's last-minute booking tactics. Remember that the 11th-hour or even past-deadline decisions have led to Prince, McCartney, Snoop Dre, Ariana, Madonna, Gaga, maybe ACDC, the 3 DJs last year and Weekend SHM doing an exclusive set.

AC/DC wasn't last minute. They were leaked by HDD with the rest of the headliners in December.

Anyone know why they never play any of Yanqui? I’ve never seen them play any of it.

I’ve had this sort of idea in the back of my mind as well, and you could look at booking Chem Bros/Underworld as a sort of trial balloon for it. If they’re doing that, I’m sure they’re bummed to have lost Rage as a headliner option too
That said, I’m not sure why Skepta fits into that lol. He’s only played the festival once and the reaction wasn’t uniquely positive.
