No comparison there. At one point, many moons ago, Adele had a bit of cool to her. But now she's just an artist playing Vegas to 45+ crowds, super boring, sharing the crowd with lets say Celine Dion at this point. Zero cultural relevance.
These Taylor numbers are nuts. I know she's massive, but what makes her THIS massive? Not in a bad way, genuinely curious 🤔
Anyways, Coachella should absolutely be doing everything they can to book her. Would be arguably their biggest booking with Beyonce being the other.
ok so i am one of the few inforoo peeps who is unabashedly a huge swift fan (also shoutout to browell & @dollyparton & uncle silly philly <3), but even with that fact i can acknowledge that a portion of her fandom is toooooo intense. let's ignore them as i answer that question though haha because they're not the reason behind her extreme popularity (more a byproduct of it).
i first heard taylor swift when i was like 12 years old and saw her music video for Tim McGraw. i thought 1) damn shes cute (honestly she was part of my bi awakening as a young teen haha), and 2) this isn't usually my kind of music but it is damn catchy. overall though that first album didn't pull me in as anything more than a very casual fan. same with her second album, Fearless, although i looove some tracks on it now -- but when it came out, i didn't think all that much of it.
then she released Speak Now at a time when i was first really exploring romantic connections in high school in the same sort of manner she reflects in her songs on that album, whilst also just going through other typical teen shit including complicated feels about growing up, going through growing pains with family and friends, random insecurities, etc. her music speaks to all of this, and whatever you want to say about taylor, she's an extremely emotive and descriptive songwriter. that started pulling me in with her third album and even more so with Red.
both Red and 1989 came out when i was in college; i'll probably always have the most sentimental attachment to Red even if it isn't my favorite TSwift album from a musical standpoint now (Folklore is). some of the feelings she expresses and explores in Red hit so fucking close to home re: my own experiences and relationships during that critical time of growth. there's a reason why so so so many millennial women (and NBs! and men! but i feel like particularlyyy AFABs) lost their shit over All Too Well: 10 Minute Version's release. because we all have at least one personal story of a relationship that felt like that and really shook us to our core.
i admittedly didn't fall in love with either reputation or lover when they first came out but have more recently revisited those albums quite a bit and have found absolute gems on both. then folkmore/evermore are just...fucking beautiful. Midnights i still need to grow with, but there's a lot to love there.
i saw a tiktok account of these two men of color who listen to/react to music they haven't heard before in a tiktok then post that reaction -- and they've got a whole series on Taylor Swift. it honestly made me emotional to watch these two men who openly admitted they hadn't ever felt compelled to listen to taylor swift before, do a dive into her discography and literally lose their shit. they were listening while watching lyric videos for songs like ATW, My Tears Ricochet, Dear John, Last Kiss... and they kept pausing the music to discuss how deep the lyrics cut into their cores -- and they both ended up tearing up during at least one of the videos. they are a far cry from that "emotional millennial female" type fan typically associated with Taylor Swift, but they were having that intense of a reaction to the cleverness and depth of her lyrics.
this was a ramble but the TL,DR=a lot of us grew up alongside her at really critical, emotionally up&down times of our lives and when we revisit old albums, we discover new gems whilst also being able to just genuinely enjoy and appreciate how artful her songs have gotten from a musical standpoint too. just reference folkmore for that.
one side of Taylor is cutthroat capitalistic businesswoman and no, i don't love that. but another side to her is that of an artist who deeply cares about and engages with her fans in a really lovely and meaningful way. she leaves "easter eggs" of meaning throughout her songs, her branding/marketing, and her live performances. i don't think she ever expected to become the insanely famous persona she is today and im sure there is a lot to struggle with there, but she somehow even amongst that identity remains super relatable to a lot of us -- and speaks on the complexity of human experience in a gorgeous way through her music.
p.s. some of her most well known songs are honestly my least favorite: Shake It Off, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Blank Space, Love Story. she has tonssssssss of songs that are lyrically genius and showcase her voice beautifully, too -- much more so than those do.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
booking taylor is way bigger than booking beyoncé and i don’t think coachella (or taylor) should do it
it would be a disservice to the show she can do on her own and bring in a large crowd of people there who really only care for her or would come just for the day bc coachella tickets are cheaper than tickets to any of her shows if you don’t get them at face
all of this just so coach can guarantee a sell out that already happens for the most part anyways
it’s silly. she’s too big for any festival for her or anybody any good. just keep playing stadium shows for the same size crowd over a few nights for s much better experience
The Adele retconning is wild. In 2015-16, she was by far the biggest artist in the world. She did eight shows at Staples and could have sold twice as many.
Anyway, getting back on track, having the biggest artists possible headline Coachella on a consistent basis is what puts them on a pedestal as the top festival in North America/probably tied with Glastonbury worldwide. Yeah, you could have Swift do shows (stick her on the Polo Field, give it a special name, and sell 125,000 tickets at top dollar for as many shows as she wants to do) and generate more profit than having her at Coachella would.
But there is also a branding value to consider. How do you get AMEX and Heineken and the rest of those sponsors to keep ponying up? It would be about keeping the wheel rolling as much as anything else.

People were literally having the same dumb “is she too big for Coachella?” arguments about Adele as they are now about Taylor.

A year ago I was saying the same about Bad Bunny lol
Taylor is too big to do festivals IMO I read she makes like $13mil+ a show there’s no way
Did you see how much Bad Bunny was pulling in on his stadium dates? Nobody would do festivals at all if they were a stadium level act and actually getting that full figure. And yeah, taylor aint getting all 13 mil for herself. You know the crew, staff, dancers and backing band has to get paid?
Taylor is bigger than bad bunny, I’m a fan of both. I wasn’t around for the height of the Michael jackson craze so can’t speak to that from experience but she’s reaching that level. Not sure if this is her peak bc I can’t see the future but I just don’t see her doing a festival. But looks like she has a coachella sized gap in her tour so pretty solid chance I’m wrong lol
Either way I’m just talking shit on a bonnaroo online forum so my opinion doesn’t really matter unless the swifties cool down and taylor wants to start doing secret sessions again, in which case, hey taylor I’m a big fan and would love to attend
I think having all her "Taylors Version" albums released is a good enough reason to celebrate with a big festival livestream for the world. Considering all she has left is Reputation and Debut, I can absolutely see her dropping Rep early Q1 and then her TV of her debut with the Coachella performance.

Reputation is probably done since theyre using a song in a movie trailer already. Same for the self titled.

Even if self titled isn’t finished, she barely plays any of those songs on this tour. And the only time she does is when it’s a surprise song.
The Taylor movie screenings for the Eras tour seem to prove the "she can't do recorded performances until the remasters are done" wrong. Seems like it would make it less likely to do Coachella with a similar show after having it seem so widely outside of the actual concert, but it could also be a way for her to play Coachella, and monetize video of her show, rather than giving it away on the stream. Feels like a slight downshift in likelihood, but not a total rule out.
