So, if they played Friday, would Big Thief be headlining? I guess the only thing is Hozier seems likely for Friday, given that Newport isn't too out of the way of Maine to NY. On before Hozier then? Pull a Lana/Billy Strings and flip them?
I’m guessing more of a Jane Pickens thing. Newport has been saving unique in demand gets for Jane Pickens as of late.
But I still don’t think we’re getting Big Thief. I’m guessing we’re getting solo acts because they’re a) cheaper, and b) it’ll be easier for them to get to Portland by Sunday. Rarely do you see a vocalist perform two full sets in a single day. (Even if the sets at Newport aren’t that long.)

So... I don't totally get the Grateful Dead/the fandom, or tribute bands, or the drag community (this isn't a dig, they must both seem to have rich subcultures), though this article has some good background on them: www.yahoo.com/entertainment/grateful-dead-drag-band-fighting-tenn-ban-lgbtq-queer-deadheads-203345485.html One of the members is from Front Country, and they seem like talented musicians. It would probably be a fun show at least.

I guess I'm on an island but I don't mind this announcement. They played a weekday set at Folk On and I only had weekend tickets so I haven't seen them yet. Is that the only time they've ever played or am I forgetting something? Both of their albums have been decent in my opinion.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Guster > Black Pumas > Hozier to close out fort stage on Friday?
I’m not expecting Guster in that spot, but the rest feels on point to me. I was thinking that Adrianne could be pre-close on the Quad. That would feel like good counter programming against the Pumas
Bumming about Black Pumas. I really liked Colors and have tried to get on board but just can’t. I did see them at Folk On but it was from the water and just fun to be out there. If they headline them maybe a quick exit to a good after show!?
That’s gotta be a headliner right? That’s a fucking bummer
No chance
I think you’re right but I’m just thinking they are headlining pitchfork who sells twice as many tickets as Newport. So if they can headline there, why can’t they headline Newport. But I hope they are a sub
Guster > Black Pumas > Hozier to close out fort stage on Friday?
Add in Allison Russell between Guster and BP and that’s what I’m thinking.
Black Pumas are in my top 5 worst Newport sets but people definitely ate it up so I’m bummed but not too surprised to see them back, and if it’s against Adrianne i don’t really care
Black Pumas is a band I want to love. I think they’re talented. Relatively energetic live. I really enjoy their sound. But their music never seems to truly deliver the ear worms that I would expect from a band like them (that fits my interests). Like you’re waiting for that truly danceable track, or that explosive blues riff, or those lyrics you can’t stop humming… but they just never come.

I saw BP at a free radio station fest shortly after their debut album came out and it was a great show. I know I’m not alone on this, but I have been really surprised by their ascent. It seems like their album from last year made no real impact, so it’s pretty wild that they have elevated themselves to headliner status based solely on the success of Colors? I’m fine with them, but it’s weird how they catapulted past somewhat similar bands like Durand Jones & The Indications.

I think I've seen them live. I liked them. I'm pretty basic so like their released stuff and would probably enjoy them if no conflicts. But I also am rather surprised at how big they seem to have gotten when I feel like they haven't really done a lot.
Makes me think a bit of Alabama Shakes who got big buzz after their album and then kinda just tried to milk that and work off that for a long time

I have to admit, I've of course heard of Black Pumas but haven't actually given them a listen until now. They do sound smooth (at least on their studio album), but...
Does anyone else think they'd be a better fit for Newport Jazz instead, especially since they've already played Folk?
Any guesses on tomorrow’s announcement? Getting a little weary.
I’m hopeful it’ll be some first timers to Newport. I’d love to see something fun like Sudan Archives or Say She She. For a more classic Newport sound, Rosali, Hannah Frances and Joanna Sternberg would be great. I’ve really been liking the new Reyna Tropical album, that should be a cool set.

I’m excited to see Say She She at Capitol Groove in Hartford. I’d like to see Hiam or The Shindellas at Folk. I’m looking forward to Reyna Tropical and LA LOM.

Hard agree on LA LOM too. I think Haim would be a big hit
