Trying to resist adding to the lineup negativity, but am I the only one disappointed by this announcement?
Are you disappointed in that she’s doing poetry or would you be disappointed even if she was singing. I suspect she’s apart of whatever Sunday is going to be. I for one am pumped about Baez if she guests on a couple songs

I think the only times I’ve really seen much disappointment on the Facebook page was Friko and this, actually, because of the poetry. I think it’s in line with the festival, even though I don’t care much for poetry. It would be neat if they brought back that indoor stage and had some poetry acts or workshops in there.

If the plan is for her to do sit ins, and have a poetry set, I think announcing the poetry and making the pop ins a surprise is the way to go about it.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Maggie rogers had an after show on Saturday and Joan is involved
welp, i hope my tickets find a nice home else where.
im usually a positive voice around but this has been a pretty brutal rollout. as excited as i am to return, we already had hesitations between leaving toddler at home and my wife being pregnant #2. i guess thanks to the team for helping make our decision to cancel a bit easier. i guess...?

I’m not trying to talk you out of it, but at this point you feel like they can’t turn it around in 18 announcements?

It depends on your toddler, but we had fun bringing ours last year. But yeah, if she’s too pregnant to travel, I wouldn’t do her dirty by leaving her alone.

Joan Baez doing poetry is pretty cool and unique. Doesn't get me super excited but I bet it will be beautiful. I'm just kind of a dope with poetry. Also wondering how that will work out sound-wise. Guess it depends on where she plays.

I’d only be marginally interested in a proper Joan Baez set, but I wouldn’t hold that against Newport. I would respect that booking given her legacy and celebrate it with the rest of you. But I think that’s why this specific booking disappoints me because Joan Baez reading poetry is even less interesting to a casual passerby like myself. It seems like one of those bookings that’s made just to appease an artist. (And reminds me of someone else’s comment on here about accepting a weaker undercard just to maybe get a more interesting headliner.) I’d also think that Newport Folk Festival, even with the level of intimacy it can provide for a festival, won’t do a poetry reading justice (as opposed to her many bookstore stops), and a significant number of people will be in attendance solely in hopes of hearing one song performed.

yeah, i won't lie, i don't give a fuck about Joan Baez. i couldn't name a single thing she's ever sung, and honestly there's very few "folk" acts from the 60s/70s era that would pique my interest. even with someone like Dylan, who i absolutely love, i dont have any desire to see him perform in 2024. im sure she'll pop up at a couple sets or at a collab show to close out a night but it doesn't move the needle for me.

“Hey Jay. Cancel Dylan. And for god sakes, next time you book someone make sure Larry can name a single thing they’ve sung. We have to move the needle for Larry!”
FYI I heard today they’re going to announce “Noah Kahan… doing special readings of the great presidential speeches.”
"Thank you, all. That was called Stick Season. Here's a new one...
1,2,3,4
It was always ‘America first.’ Very simple, very simple. It’s all about America first. It was also about ‘make America great again,’ but it was about America first because that’s how you make it great.”
Calgary Folk Fest announced their full lineup. So far Billie Marten is the only overlap. Not sure if I see much else that might crossover, maybe Margaret Glaspy or Margo Cilker could make their way back for a Sunday set? The Booker T Stax Revue set sounds fun, some cool stuff on the lineup.
