And some of the “Friends” were announced on Facebook announcement. This is going to be a can’t miss set! (Not Billy Strings, but a lot of the other bluegrass musicians he’s recorded with including Sierra Hull and Victor Wooten. Plus “Special Guests” which could be Billy.)
Could also see Chris Thile. Am so excited for this set!
Cory Wong was enough for me, and then the lineup of guests announced is fucking great
I was hoping for Sierra Hull, but having her on the list of immense talent will be so fun! I wonder if it makes Billy Strings/Chris Thile more or less likely though.
NO clue about Cory Wong. I think he played at a DMB show I went to? Where do I begin?
Live at Montreux jazz festival is 100% the move. If you are not aware, he’s also a member of Vulfpeck and Fearless flyers. Members of both bands are listed as guests, so it’s possible to get 1 or two of tracks from those bands as well
Black Pumas are a subheadliner, I think. And there are only three subs.
Yeah, probably. Gillian and TWOD, being on the same day, left some room to maneuver.
Edit: Almost instantly feels worse after moving them up, ha.
Feel like a lot of the criticism of the lineup has been focused on the headliners. If you look at the bottom 2/3 of the lineup you have posted it would blow away almost any other festival's bottom 2/3rds. Newport brings quality throughout the day, but is not a headliner focused festival. I often find that my favorite sets, at the end of the weekend, were midday sets and at least one of the headliners was a bit lackluster. I am more than fine with that. Newport delivers heart and quality.

I think I’m the exact opposite of this. The undercard is riddled with Noah Kahan openers and it bums me out. I think the higher acts we have so far are decent to good, but a lot of the earlier in the day stuff isn’t for me. Music is subjective, yada yada, but my personal taste is that the smaller acts are not up to par for Newport standards, based off my taste

The Oh Hellos have 3 million Spotify listeners, more than MUNA, so I wonder if they skills be switched based off of popularity?
I often use Spotify listeners to gauge popularity, but I think some artists on this year’s lineup have slightly inflated Spotify numbers because of their inclusion on Spotify’s popular Coffeehouse playlists.
Pretty interesting how many acts are more popular on spotify really, obviously some have increased since last Summer but still interesting

I will say, his albums don’t do the live show justice. He’s a master at creating a one off big show. So if the albums aren’t pulling you in, I’d still check it out

Look up Sierra Hull and Cory and the Wong Notes, and that’s probably more in line with what the set will be like vs. his solo stuff. On Facebook he said he’ll be playing acoustic.

This is great intel, didn’t even know he did acoustic stuff

This gives me Bela Fleck and the Flecktones vibes, so it’ll be cool to see Victor Wooten playing with them! (Bela Fleck is unlikely, as he’ll be in the Midwest Saturday and Monday).

I was going to suggest some adjustments, but I honestly don't know with this lineup. Like, Wednesday seems too much of a buzz act to open the quad (they had a bunch of AOTY noms last year), but I don't know where else they go. Part of me thinks Adrienne Lenker closes the Harbor. Saturday seems pretty solid except I can't decide if TWOD or Gillian/Dave is better suited in the sub spot. No idea what to do with that Baez thing.
I really doubt Dropkick Murphys are Fort, they seem like a classic Quad act. Switch Tinariwen and LA LOM I think.
