You would have to think that just a straight up MJ Lenderman set with one more act would’ve sold faster than this. A podcast is a weird choice
I would love to see an MJ Lenderman set but ultimately went with Illiterate Light Thursday because I was nervous about the music to chit chat ratio. Can't lose either way but still.
I have it in my head that’s it’s 45 mins of each. I’ll be bummed if it’s like an hour and 15 of podcast and 3 MJ songs
My statement is specifically about charging 75 bucks for a DJ set, not announcing it’s a DJ set from the fest and then booking it twice
Dang this Jays burner acct?
LOL I told a friend that would be someones take.
I'm just someone who's been to Glastonbury, ACL, SXSW, ACL, Bonnaroo, Pickathon, Outside Lands, High Sierra and I am sure others I can't think of right now. But as someone who's been to a lot of festivals, the only one I'd consider traveling for other than Newport is Pickathon. The one I hear is great and would consider is Nelsonville. And if this were Jay's burner account I'd not talk about how absurd it is they can't implement a zero waste deal like Pickathon. If as someone said earlier people will come no matter how awful the acts are, then I would think they could institute a more draconian waste policy.

What an absolute joke.
Don't go to the Festival. Don't go to the after shows. You will not have anything to complain about.

That seems about right. If it's a 45 minute full band set I might have a twinge of regret about my decision.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

if the only festivals you'd travel for are this and Pickathon then your tastes are so completely in the bag for exactly this kind of event that your opinion honestly can't be trusted.

Hey bud, what the fuck are you talking about lol. It’s just speculation, as we don’t have details. Everything I say you come at me and I’m not exactly sure what I did to piss you off. But there’s one negative energy in here and it’s you.

Hey now, I'm bringing plenty of the negative energy myself. Please give me some credit.

The argument over whether the fest has gone downhill or is now overpriced for the value you are receiving is complex. I am going to ramble a bit with my thoughts.
We have all been involved in communities where people are giving 200% of themselves to make the community magical. For me, it all goes back to being a teenager in summer camp and theater programs. Everyone there was getting paid nothing, and they were pouring their hearts into it to make it magical for everyone involved. More recently, I have been involved in communities like this one that are hybrid online/real life, and there is a parasocial dynamic where we are all feeding off of the leadership that is putting in 200%. Jay and the team were doing this back in the 2013-2020 period. The stuff he was making happen with the fest was magical because it was so much more than just a music festival.
I think COVID took a lot of that away. It became a lot of work in 2020 and 2021 to just make anything happen, and a lot of the community was not appreciative of those efforts. I think this happened with a lot of community leaders... churches, schools... they all felt like they were working really hard to just make things work, and the people they were serving were really frustrated with their performance in those conditions.
Then there was 2022 with Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. It created a fervor in the general public. Everything sold out in seconds. People can't even get a membership because it is a lottery. Jay and the team (including Brandi Carlisle) put together a great weekend once again.
Since then, we have had a down year. Very little surprise last year. Aftershows have gone downhill. There are no more messy Newport Blues Cafe shows or surprises at the Parlor. And... 2023 had the worst ending of a festival that I have attended. I blame Lana Del Ray, but the team is ultimately responsible.
But the thing that gets to me, the same as it does Beeker, is that Jay Sweet made $402,700 in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. That is just too much for an ED of a non-profit that is asking people to sacrifice. If you are making that much, then the expectation should be that you are putting magic into this festival (and the Jazz fest) each year.
I disagree that this year's music lineup is poor. There are about 15 acts that I would pay to see. I have loved discovering Friko, Palmyra, and Briscoe. I am really looking forward to Welch and Rawlings and Cory Wong, and I hope that Conan puts on a great Sunday closer that feels magical once again. It will be a great weekend as it always is. I retain hope that the magic will still be there.
And... 2023 had the worst ending of a festival that I have attended. I blame Lana Del Ray, but the team is ultimately responsible.
If 2023 had the worst ending of any festival you attended then why are you blaming the artist who went second to last (LDR) instead of the one who closed (Billy Strings)?
I have had fun every year I've been and if that stops I'll stop going. Lodging is crazy expensive but under $100/day for 3 day passes remains a steal especially in this concert environment.
The discussion of salaries is gross. It serves no other purpose than to stoke resentment or jealousy. The notion that anyone would evaluate the lineup differently if his salary was lower is bullshit.

It absolutely does matter. Especially when you openly talk about how little you pay your talent…
Pay your talent better, and take a smaller salary.
And yes, I’m still salty that I donated my tickets back in 2020 so the brass could continue to take a full salary without skipping a beat. Live and learn though. Never again.

They run as a non-profit with a mission. When you run as a nonprofit you have a responsibility to the people donating money to the non profit to be fiscally responsible.

I mean I know what the answer is but still
Second this confusion.
How on earth was the ending “the worst of any festival (OP) attended” AND that OP blames Lana Del Ray for that?
Did some of the crowd in the pit suck for LDR? Yes. But it wasn’t the young girls sing-screaming along who sucked. It was the middle-age men wearing captain hats who spent the day drinking and showed up and pushed in moments after she started playing who sucked. (Those men have always been at Newport; they just usually spend their day on the beer pier and not in the pit.)
LDR showed extreme reverence for the stage she was playing on. She had one of the most Newport sets of all “headliners” playing last year: playing a few unique songs that were not part of her tour, bringing out multiple special guests to play along with her to create unique and intimate moments. All while probably losing some time in her set from what she was promised or had expected because the festival chose to move Billy to the headliner spot once it was determined he’d be a late arrival at the fest that day.
So she had some dancers on stage? The festival used to book cloggers… so choreographed dancing isn’t an anomaly at Newport either.

I still don’t think someone who runs a fest with a small crew year round making 400k is that crazy. Artist opt in at a lower price and sacrifice 2 days. Why wouldn’t the guy who curated a successful fest year in and year out, all year around make good money. I struggle to find the demonization

also im sorry but Jay Sweet knocking his salary down by 100k isn't going to magically improve the lineups. the fact is, if someone is going to play NFF, they have to do it at a serious discount, and an extra 100k isn't going to move the needle.
if you want an answer as to why the lineup isn't great this year, here it is. first, fests in general are down this year. it seems like the festival industry is cycling through some changes, there's a lot of oversaturation and LiveNation dominating the market (and thus booking a lot of acts on exclusive festival/tour package deals) changes things. but even outside of that, it just seems like this year is kind of soft in terms of names playing the circuit; even Coachella (which I maintain is the absolute top of the top for USA fests) had a lackluster (for them) lineup. it is what it is in some regards.
second (and more specific to NFF) is genre fatigue. when NFF strays even slightly outside of certain completely imaginary boundaries as to what "folk" should be, lots of people get weird and upset about it. so keeping the lineup to a mix of mostly americana/semi-country-bluegrassy/"folk" leads to these kinds of lineups. you're gonna get some twangy stuff, some stomp clap stuff, some "soul" stuff, etc. and there are only so many artists who can fit the bill.
anyway, y'all complain too much. go to the fest, see a couple good sets, then go get a beer and some oysters. i care about/like this music far less than most of you and yet i still manage to enjoy myself.

also i caught Guster at Capitol Groove tonight and holy shit what a terribly unserious band. just the corniest thing i've ever seen, the lead singer should be taken out behind a shed like Old Yeller.
