Havent seen this mentioned, but my dark horse for the TBA set on Friday is Dr. Dog.
New album out today and they aren't techincally a "touring" band anymore, but they've been playing a few shows here and there this summer and are playing Riot Fest in September.
Probably a long shot, but they've played the fest before, so I see them as about as likely as any of the other bands mentioned
I would love this, but I’m buying into Larry’s theory that it’s someone bound by a radius clause and as far as I can tell Dr. Dog would t have one, but I’d love to be wrong
Is that out of bounds somehow? I thought we had been discussing what their set might look like.
I’m biased because I absolutely love gill and Dave and it makes total sense to me. I just get sour when it feels like people need more from a set other than the act playing their music. I think they’re one of the true folk artist remaining and I’m grateful to have them. I just don’t think j they need to do more and neither did Billy strings.
I’m not coming at you, I’m just griping to the ether about the state of folk fandom where Noah Kahan and Nathaniel Rateliff are celebrated, but Gillian and Dave better have a guest or play covers. I just think a rich history within the genre is better reason for their headliner status than weighing it against their venue capacities.

Fair enough. I don't have that same connection to them so I wind up looking at it more analytically. But I've had every intention to catch their set regardless so maybe I'll feel differently in 11 days!

I think both sides of the argument are valid.
This might be the first Newport headliner where everyone who has asked me who I’m excited to see headlining Newport has followed with a “who is that?” when I mention Dave and Gillian. I was kind of expecting that maybe I was just underestimating their draw on their reunion tour, but the venue sizes tell me otherwise.
As for hoping for special guests, I don’t think that’s unfair when quite a bit of their most popular music was originally written for other bands and artists.

It’s worth noting that when interviewed, Toby or Scott said the reason they were playing Riot Fest was because they were being paid a lot of money (Philly Imquirer?). So I don’t think it’s them.

The couple different people I talked to last year on Friday had no idea who MMJ were and said they were surprised they were headlining. The guy who sold me the ticket said “no one in his group wanted to see MMJ and was surprised they were playing” lol so is it I who is wrong, or the people.
Gotta love Jack starting a campaign to get people talking a week out from the fest. Maybe he’ll be back in the headlines in 10 days
So JW on the Quad right?
I’m not going that hard. I think he’s Conan’s main guest. I find it hard to believe he would play Friday and ruin the surprise for Conan, but what the fuck do I know.
But holy fuck, if we got a solo acoustic surprise jack set at the quad, fuck. Don’t you start this in my brain

I love Dawes…but I just don’t see him playing in a band backed by Dawes.

We agree, I think Dawes gets the boot towards the end, Jack and Conan do 3 songs together acoustic and then maybe Jack is cool enough to stick around for an all hands on deck sing along.

I dunno, it’d be weird to say Dawes were an essential part of the whole thing and then boot them for the end haha.
I actually did not realize that Griffin played Drums on the Basement Tapes. I’m still going with this for that set.
Dawes is basically Griffin and Taylor right now.
This would be nuts. As much as I dislike Marcus Mumfords songwriting, didn’t realize that dude was all over that record in different instruments. Respect

And De La at 4:20 on Sunday. So that can’t be a coincidence haha.
Even more interesting is the schedule goes back to the same as Saturdays and Sundays with start times at 4:15 and 5:45.
Dude, it’s him. They adjusted one stages schedule by 5 minutes to accommodate jack being a lunatic and needing to play at 3 and goes back to normal right after his set. Holy shit. Also makes sense why it’s not announced.
