Saw a couple movies I'm surprised are shut out - "May December", "Iron Claw", and (not quite shut out) "The Color Purple". It's too bad Charles Melton couldn't get a supporting nod for his beautiful work in "May December", glad to see "Color Purple" is at least getting acting nods - quite well deserved.
I see why "Iron Claw" is shut out when it's a very competitive season with giant filmmakers like Scorsese and Nolan and the WB "Barbie" machine. But it's worth watching, especially on the big screen.

Greta Gerwig getting the shaft sucks.
But I hope we get Ryan Gosling doing "I'm Just Ken" live at the ceremony.
I feel like best actor and best actress are two-horse races - Murphy (the favorite)/Giamatti (the upset special) in the former and Gladstone/Stone in the latter.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 11/21 - Caribou @ Avant Gardner 11/23 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center 11/25 - TV on the Radio @ Webster Hall 12/5 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center 12/7 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center 12/14 - LCD Soundsystem @ Knockdown Center
Only one I need to see still is The Zone of Interest. There's a theater playing it like an hour away but I read somewhere it should hit VOD in the next couple of weeks so wondering whether I should just wait.
I think the Greta snub in best director is probably the biggest woah. At least America Ferrera got in for supporting actress.
didn't even notice Greta missing, that sucks.
I truly love America Ferrera and am happy for her but i don't think that role was worthy of a nom.
Only one female allowed for director. Thems the rules. Had been reading some stuff last night saying to not be shocked if a certain female got left out of a major category. Seems that shouldve been plural.

Am I remembering incorrectly but didn’t Greta & Chloe Zhao get nominated in the same year? Guess once every 80 years, if that’s true

Yeah, only once per century. And lets remember how the academy moved Barbie out of original screenplay into adapted just for shits and giggles.
IMO, Barbie should have been an original screenplay. It would have bumped one of those other lesser known movies out and also probably freed up an adapted screenplay for KOTFM.
Also, it’s a bit mind blowing that this is only Paul Giamatti’s 2nd oscar nomination, and first for best actor. His only other nom was in a supporting role in Cinderella Man. Not exactly the first role that comes to mind in his filmography.
Paul in an interview with Deadline said he was supposed to be in Twin Peaks: The Return and now I’m going crazy trying to figure out which role was he supposed to play.
Paul was also in Confidence which is one of my all time favorite films. Always loved him ever since then and hope he wins with having seen Holdovers. Expecting Cillian though.

No documentary nomination for American Symphony, Jon Batiste is a hack fraud!
Sad that Hisaishi was snubbed once again.
Loling at how dumb the French look for trying to snuff Anatomy of a Fall’s chances with their international pick.
Been having a laugh at the meltdown over Margot and Greta. I would have included them in the top 5 of their respective categories, but at the end of the day the competition this year meant that there would be brutal snubs.
Who would you take out of Best Director to fit Greta in? I think I’d do the unthinkable and snub Marty. Him or Lanthimos.
I have lots of thoughts that maybe I'll collect at some point but overall this is a pretty great set of best picture noms. Special shoutout to Dianne Warren for getting a nomination for writing a Becky G song about Cheetos.

I think the consensus for these being the top 10 films of the year is pretty strong. Producers Guild and Oscar are 10 for 10 which I don't think ever happens.
Also Gold Derby got the top 10 all right as well, currently ranking them as
1. Oppenheimer 2. The Holdovers 3. Poor Things 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. American Fiction 6. Killers of the Flower Moon 7. Barbie 8. The Zone of Interest 9. Maestro 10. Past Lives

There's snubs every year but I started thinking if you're going to claim there was a snub, you should also point out who should be left out in that person's or movie's place. For Gerwig, the only one I'd personally replace her with is possibly Glazer. But I couldn't really do that with any confidence since I haven't seen The Zone of Interest yet (but I am surprised Glazer got the nod over her nonetheless.) I also think I would have went with Dafoe over Ruffalo but that's probably just me cause I like Dafoe so much in everything. Other than that, I don't think there were many other major snubs this year. I wasn't as big of a fan of Leo in KOTFM as I normally am for his roles. I want to say Margot should have been nominated over Mulligan but again, I haven't seen Maestro so idk for sure.

i also haven't seen Zone of Interest, but i'm for some reason supremely confident it's going to be incredible. awful to watch and not entertaining at all but incredible.
also haven't seen maestro but i think Mulligan should get nominated for everything she's in by default.
