Maybe I’m letting my bias get in the way bc I like him a lot but I thought Dafoe was much better than Ruffalo in Poor Things. He played a much more layered and complicated character. Ruffalo was just a stupid egomaniac. He was good, just don’t know why that was the pick there.
I think you guys are way overrating Barbie. It was a fine summer movie.
I will admit that I grade Barbie a bit on a curve because of what it *could* have been. Like, when Mattel was shopping the license for film adaptation, my hunch is that they did not have in mind a surrealist anti-patriarchy fantasy made old-school, featuring a dream ballet of dancing Kens and tagged by a gynecology joke. Sure, Barbie isn't Doctor Zhivago, but it's SO MUCH better and more interesting than it has any right to be given its origins.
And that's why I think Gerwig not getting a Best Director nod is such a huge snub, because, by all accounts, everything Barbie did turn out to be is down to her vision and execution of it. She directed the hell out of that movie, stood by her convictions for the inclusion of certain material in the face of studio pressure, and got fantastic performances out of her leads in roles that could've easily been played with far fewer notes. It was outstanding work in a challenging environment. I don't know what more you can ask of a director than that.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

for starters, they didn’t have to put a 3 minute Ford commercial in the middle of the movie

Yeah, the practice of product placement in major studio motion pictures is definitely Greta Gerwig's fault.

This sounds like a pretty strong argument for writing and production noms which it got.
I think the nominations are overall pretty sound. Past Lives was the biggest miss for me, probably my favorite movie of the year. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo both deserved nominations IMO. I know A24 bungled the release but I was also pulling hard for a Zach Efron Iron Claw nomination.

I was grading Barbie on a curve of it being a Greta Gerwig movie and by that standard it was fine. It had some funny jokes and some pretty basic things to say about like feminism but it never dovetailed into a strong narrative for me. The movie can't commit to whether Ken is a villain or comic relief and it suffers for it. I also think the Will Ferrell/Mattel stuff is cliché and is the movie trying to eat its cake and have it too.

People love saying who was snubbed, but not who should be taken out. It was one of the most stacked years for film in a long time, especially for performances. Lots of great stuff is not gonna make the cut.

Not trying to argue but curious if you graded Oppenheimer and KOTFM on that same curve? And if so, did they come up ahead from the directors prior works?

Anyone else see "Anatomy of a Fall" and love it? I saw it on Friday and it didn't do it for me at all. Did I miss something?
Good performances and interesting concept of memory / objectivity, but I expected something to wow me. Now I feel dumb for not getting it.
I thought it was a really well done old school court room drama and not much else. I thought it was a good watch but I agree that considering it won Cannes I was expecting to be wowed and it never really happened.
