nice to have the dates locked in right away. feel like we didn't get the dates until Fall last year?
after having to cancel last minute this year i'm highly motivated to make 2025 happen. the lineup will have to be truly terrible for me not to go. but honestly they've done pretty good lineup-wise for me since 2019 so i have faith.
We weren’t able to go this year, but I went to take the survey anyway, figuring there’d still be some value (tell us why couldn’t you go, how many years had you gone before, what bands do you hope to see to get you back? etc.) Instead, as soon as I answered that I hadn’t attended, the survey immediately ended, hahaha. Harsh!
I’ve missed a few years since 2012, and I feel like they used to ask a little about non-attendees, but no more. Maybe they’ve done well enough to not care. They’ve said in the past first-time attendees are their biggest audience. Anyway, it just struck me funny. Sounds like most who went had a great time this year despite the heat. Excited to hear some of our friends report back!

good to know regarding the survey. i also got a survey link, i'll respond saying i attended. will wait for others who actually attended for their pros/cons before i fill it out. other than my standard "book metal bands" and "book phish" responses.
i haven't followed too closely but seeing what pops up on reddit the only negatives i'm seeing are the heat and some issues with security. not sure if the security issues were real or just people being hyperbolic.

This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I think Rufus is a sub at worst at this point. This group would be the best they've had in awhile though

I followed along on reddit all weekend, and it made it sound like everything not locked down was being stolen by either crooked security personnel, random camp invaders, or mysterious thieves who ninja into your camp while you're sleeping and disappear without a trace.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

I remember being slightly upset that someone jacked my ipod nano 6th generation back in 06. Left it out in the open. But we deserved it. Blared music all day with ragers that went till sunrise. Our neighbors all hated us. Shit, id hate us now a days. Let me sleep you youngins and get off my lawn!

yes, also "the vibes were off". which, inevitably when one of those threads pop up at least one person will say it's because they don't have the zigzag line entry anymore so people don't know to high five each other.
something i always want to say to seasoned vets complaining about the vibes is the vibes start with you my guys. don't get upset because people aren't friendly to you, instead go be friendly to somebody else. compliment someone's outfit, keep that hand up for a high five until somebody reciprocates, if you see a group taking a selfie offer to take a proper picture for them, ask a stranger if you could be any animal in the world what would you be.
and if anyone is an asshole to you the answer isn't to cry about it, the answer is to double down on your friendliness.
having said all that, yes, bonnaroo has changed. the jamband scene was far from perfect in 2002 but there was a strong sense of community and "we're all in this together" that carried over from tour into the festival setting. the newbies attending bonnaroo these days mostly don't know shit about that scene, but we can show it to them through our actions.
morality and ethics in the real world is complicated. at a music festival it's simple. just do the right thing, even if you don't feel like it.

Reddit always delivers some good copypasta around this time of year:
This year marks my 8th Bonnaroo and I need to get something off my chest.
When we arrived at the farm on Thursday, we definitely noticed that the overall vibe was less ‘friendly’ than it was at our very first Bonnaroo.
On Friday evening I tried to reflect on why that seemed liked the case. Was it because this was the first time they sold day passes, when Bonnaroo has typically always been a 4 day commitment that requires an emotional investment from its attendees? Perhaps it was because Kalliope, with its weird characters and the best flame cannons in the game to date, were no longer a constant presence in Centeroo.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realize that it’s because we are changing as people. Both collectively and individually (definitely true for me at least).
In 2015, my first bonnaroo, I still remember all the wonderful bonnaroo veterans who smiled and had amazing and chill conversations with me. I have always been extroverted but that bonnaroo was like taking that slider and slamming all the way to max - every subsequent year, I would always look forward to making more Bonnaroo friends, because my Bonnaroo friends ‘just get it’.
Looking back, would my current self, today, would have acted the same kind way those strangers did if they happened upon some random solo 21 year old rolling for the first time? I’d like to think yes, but honestly I have changed so much. Part of that is personal (ended a 4 year relationship that left me shot with low self-confidence and trust issues) but a big part of it was that, after I started going out more both where I live, but even at somewhere like Bonnaroo, I had become scared and intimidated that l couldn’t be the outgoing version of the Bonnaroo vet that was so impressionable upon the younger version of me all those years ago. I had become afraid to look people in the eyes while passing them which meant I couldn’t smile at them and give them a little Happy Roo High-five - one of my favorite Bonnaroo traditions, let alone have a conversation. If I couldn’t even do that myself, especially as a (formerly very talkative) 8 year vet, I wasn’t planting the seed of positivity for the next generation of Bonnaroovians.
Technology and the pandemic changed us as a society. Even the most social among us have changed slightly. Most of us have struggled with social anxiety on some level at some point- it’s natural. But Bonnaroo, which is so many things to so many people, has 2 things which bring us all together - good music and human connection. It’s a place where you can go and escape from the fear of saying hello to a stranger - literally when you walk in, you’re supposed to high-five complete strangers before you pass under the arch- that’s literally supposed to set the vibe up.
Our society is in uncharted and unpredecented territory right now. No one alive has experienced anything like the pandemic before it happened. Since social media was introduced to middle schoolers, the rates of anxiety and depression for young people has skyrocketed. And no, it’s not just because it’s easier to diagnose - it’s no secret that social media encourages some of the worst part of our social behavior today (clout-chasing, increased self-consciousness of your behavior in case someone is secretly recording you, swiping on tinder for a hookup instead of having the courage talking to someone you think is cute in the crowd).
BUT WE CAN UN-FUCK THIS. Bonnaroo is the antidote.
Even just this morning, I’ve seen so many posts about the amazing times of first-timers. And while many of us feel like the vibe was worse than previous years, and perhaps it was, we have the collective agency to bring it back - it just takes an acceptance that it enough of us do our part individually to be kind and open people (even if we are usually aren’t that person naturally in real life), that has an incredibly powerful and multiplying affect when enough of us are doing it.
It’s true that a majority or at least very healthy minority of people may not return the good vibes that you’re putting out there. Many people just come here to escape more than to experience. But that’s ok and perfectly valid too! Our only job is to love and put good vibes out there - what happens after that is out of our control, and typically the universe is kind to those who can put good vibes out there as well.
There are so many beautiful little things that can happen at Bonnaroo. One good conversation before a set with a strangers, a dance circle with people who you never knew could move like that, watching a 65 year authentically southern man (that you may have confidently assumed was a diehard Trumper if you saw him in a gas station), losing his fucking mind, jamming out to Chappell Roan (who fucking destroyed it yesterday btw). Moments like those are why we keep coming back every year.
So if you’re a Bonnaroo veteran complaining about the vibe (or lack thereof), there isn’t a reason to. Our job is to get to the farm, listen to some amazing music, eat some delicious, greasy-ass food, get dusty black boogers out of our nose every morning, and put good vibes out there. That’s it. You’re not owed good vibes so you shouldn’t expect them to just happen to you. But if you go into it wanting to create those moments with other, from your closet friends or partners to complete and total strangers, I can (insert Charles Barkley’s voice) “GUARANTEEE” you that your individual experience will be so much better (I tried doing this on Saturday and Sunday and had an infinitely better time) and I expect that if enough of this have this mindset, the overall Bonnaroo vibe stock price will be looking like this 📈📈📈. SO ITS TIME TO INVEST.
I heard Faye Webster was going around on Wednesday putting her hand up to give people high fives and then pulling her hand away, yelling TOO SLOW, then slicking her hair back and cackling.

Gonna need Roo to actually deliver next year though for me to be in. Cant do these 22/24 quality lineups anymore. Gonna need some Sturgill, Billy, Jack White, Tyler the Creator, Justice, Deftones, Primus, Kacey, Jamie xx, Ween, VW. Nothing insane but 5 of those would be a great start.
Only 2 acts that would be an instant buy would be McCartney and Radiohead I think.
if Neil played that would be a pretty hard one to pass for me given how much I enjoy the festival and haven't been able to see him this year. Radiohead is an auto buy.
