rufus du sol dj set is only 2/3 of them too. i believe tyrone said he wont be there. imo they could easily headline, their Osheaga headline crowd was absolutely massive.
Yeah I could see them headlining when their next album comes out.
Stuff like this makes me feel like I'm going crazy. Rufus is not a headliner. They aren't right now and they never will be.
People have called this headline trio "weak" ever since it was being predicted, but you know what? I don't even bat an eye when I see them, or any other headliner that's been announced in the past 10 years, when I scroll past the "entertainment" section of Google News. I would be shocked if I ever saw Rufus there, and Google knows I'm a huge fan of theirs. I've basically never seen them mentioned outside of festival subreddits. They are a blip on the pop music scale, not the literal biggest things active. The last time they played my city they played a theater.
Like, good on them, they got a big crowd at some hippy fest. And I know that Spotify metrics aren't the definitive bar or anything, but you have to go back to 2016 for LCD Soundsystem to find a single headliner that doesn't have twice their monthly listeners. And this is 2024, and they were considered a ridiculous stretch back in 2016 and had a puny crowd. Tame Impala is cited as a weak headliner with a small crowd and his streams blow them out of the water. In fact, I used "twice" and if it wasn't for Rage Against the Machine I'd have said 3x, and the exception here is literally RATM.
I've been arguing since 2018 that Odesza isn't big enough and will never headline Coachella and Rufus is in the exact same boat. They aren't big enough, period. And until this year, I thought Odesza was squarely in RTTD range but with No Doubt filling that slot after SHM (who is also way bigger than Rufus but considered a joke headliner) and Calvin Harris (massively bigger than Rufus, but agreed to sub in 2020) it's grown way past them.
And now, because you see excitement for their Quasar stage DJ set they are headliners? Yeah, no.

Straight up I don't even think Rufus can necessarily even demand a sub-headline spot. They could sub-headline and might be strong there, but they could also easily be booked third on their day at Coachella.
They are the definition of a sub. No way can they headline but I also have a really hard time seeing them at a #3. And I agree that RTTD is too big for them, that is rapidly turning into a strong headliner not the weak one. Calvin closed out, No Doubt was the biggest of the weekend, and if rumors were correct that’s where Rage was going to be slotted.

Yeah they would probably sub but I can also see them ending up behind something like Gorillaz if things shook out that way, though that's more of an extreme case.
I have a strong assumption that one of them will be Rhianna based on what little I've heard.
I’ve only heard that there is a headliner booked already that is massive. I thought Rihanna too but I have no evidence. That being said over the last few years there have been plenty of massive headliners that were booked before poster drop so I’m not holding my breath.

well, hopefully you can get some scoopz from the artist areas haha

I think with new music and especially if she can get another hit, Lorde should get the headliner boost (though I'm a fan, so my bias is showing). Feel it would be a similar narrative as Tyler and Lana, though I wouldn't say her fanbase is as dedicated. Have her play Saturday with the Returning To The Desert/AND.. artist and I think it would go well.

If Lorde has another string of mega singles then maybe she could (but like, this is true of almost any artist that has broken out at some point). But there is no indication that she's at all interested in making that sort of music. If anything, the very opposite, she seems intent on living a much more low key life and making only the music she wants to make, and definitely isn't down to play the PR media hype game at all. I love her music and her as an artist, but I don't think she's ever going to push as far as even reaching subheadliner again.

Had her as a #3 on the mock I made for this year tbh and to me that’s way more likely than headliner

That would have to be one stacked mock if she's 3rd.
who are other acts that could fit the no doubt slot next year
Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Paramore, The Killers, Metallica
speaking purely from a reunion standpoint: Oasis, REM, Sade,
Tame Impala: maybe, the kids love them Arctic Monkeys: in the diminishing returns era and a few years too soon for nostalgia The Killers: feel like this would have been the year for them Metallica: too old now Oasis: if they play, it will be the year after their UK tour, just like blur, Pulp, etc REM: will never happen Sade: do we know if Paul is even interested?
I'd add... Green Day: lots of hits, crowd-pleasing live show Korn: not the No Doubt slot, but maybe the Weezer 2009 slot Limp Bizkit: see Korn
Yeah I could see them headlining when their next album comes out.

I think the only way a LCD sized band ever headlines again is if it hits the very specific variables that LCD just so happens to fill - (1) fits into the still relevant but nostalgic Venn diagram (2) a reunion (3) likely a cheap headliner (4) would garner media attention — as it did (5) scratched the itch of the art school Brooklyn it’s in tiny jackets.
I can’t think of another act like that? Maybe The Strokes when they co-headlined with Kanye? The legacy acts (like Talking Heads, Oasis) are on a different echelon of attention, and I’m not confident their audience would be that big (I’m more confident that Oasis would pull though cause of Wonderwall).

I think Arctic Monkeys would be the perfect late addition ala Vampire Weekend / Arcade Fire, but I wouldn't be opposed to them headlining. I agree that they'd draw just as many people as most of the headliners this year.
can we start the confidence man sonora set manifestation circle.
also if the marias album hits (which why would it not) I need them to get a khrungbin/boygenius style bump to nighttime outdoor.
Marias are long-time GV favorites and have enough demand in SoCal they just added a second date at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in LA which is big
I'd actually frame it differently and say it would have to be a pretty massive flop to not get a 4th/5th overall billing next year
Marias will be top line and I would give them a prime time Outdoor slot unless you give them sunset on Main. Hollywood Forever holds not even 2500 so its an underplay when they sold out the greek last time in an hour.

I could see the following acts from the 2019, 2022 and 2023 lineups making their return: The Marias (As mentioned), Turnstile (second line), Remi Wolf, Clairo, Four Tet, Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Parcels, Vince Staples, Mac DeMarco, BADBADNOTGOOD, Crumb, Orville Peck, Nicki Nicole, Mannequin Pussy, Ethel Cain, Keinemusik (or at least Adam Port), 070 Shake, Mochakk, SG Lewis, RUFUS DU SOL (as mentioned), Anderson .Paak (I think with NxWorries), Blood Orange, Wallows, Amelie Lens, Polo & Pan, FISHER....
Also think if we get the XX, I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie xx does a separate solo set too.

I'd be surprised if Jamie xx was on the poster if the XX already was. But I'd also be surprised if he didn't do a DoLab set while he was there, potentially Romy too/with him.
