Oh snap. Hmm, I haven't been to Austin in a while. Okay, after checking out the lineup, I'll wait for a solo show elsewhere.
I know I'm spoiled because I just saw Amyl and the Sniffers, Khruangbin, Interpol, Gorillaz, Dua, Tyler back-to-back at Primavera a couple years ago, but damn.
Weak ACL lineup. At least last year they had a few novel acts like Mars Volta, Jessie Ware, and Death Grips. This is just the same names that have been recycled by festivals in the last two years. Headliners are ok though
Does Dua headlining ACL mean anything to us? They shared no headliners in 2023
Not too much. The only headliners Coachella would’ve bothered with from ACL 2023 were Kendrick and ODESZA, both of which were touring off albums that probably would’ve been too old come April 2024.
My main takeaway from ACL and OSL is that I have seriously underestimated Sturgill Simpson's drawing power.
Or they've overestimated, but in fairness he's not really a headliner at either (he's 4th billed at OSL and 5th at ACL), and those slots are generally more like 3-5's on their day at Coachella, where I think he'd fit in fine.

He’s actually third at OSL, so top of his day. The last 3 acts in that spot have been Odesza, SZA, and Tyler who are also all Coachella headliners. I do feel like that is a bit overbilled for him. 5th at ACL would probably translate to a sub at Coachella.

Yeah, but Post Malone is on the bill at the bottom as well, and he's the biggest act on the lineup, which effectively makes Sturgill 4th.
You're right overall though, 4th OSL/5th ACL is probably a sub at Coachella.
Dua’s SNL was mediocre (especially after the stellar Gosling and Wiig episodes), which makes it more impressive that her star power kept audiences tuned in with the largest live and same day audience since October.
As others have noted, there are other indicators that point to star power other than the Spotify Top 10.

Yeah but like I could have seen myself putting him on like the third line of a mock. He's got less than 3M Spotify listeners. I'm sure (hoping?) he has sold some big venues but not really a genre I follow at all. I actually had Stapleton in a huge billing spot on my Coachella mock last year (I forget where but maybe like a #4) so that one makes sense to me but I always assumed Sturgill had a dedicated but more fringe audience. OSL billing floored me. I haven't been so shocked by a billing at a fest since seeing The Stone Roses headlining Coachella. So, I'm dumb which is nothing new.

Country acts always seem under represented on the streaming charts relative to the tickets they move. Not sure if it's more the country demographic or more pop act stream #s being overinflated by 12 year olds who aren't buying tickets.
I'm not saying Sturgill is Luke Combs, but I'm guessing he moves more tickets than his streaming #s suggest.

You guys clearly are forgetting what a MASSIVE FLOP Sound and Fury was. Sturgill is lucky to get billed at all and should probably do us all a favor and just retire imho.

Except Morgan Wallen. Gotta stick it to the libs
But I feel like even his #s out of whack compared to how big he is tour wise.

Historically country fans didn't stream much and relied more heavily on terrestrial radio and physical media. They're finally coming around to streaming but I think their total numbers still might be deceptively down (streaming, digital, physical) because country radio is still pretty big.
I saw The Offspring tonight and they need to be in the Sublime slot next year
I had such a fucking blast watching them at WWWY 2023, lost my voice, lost my phone (stolen), no regrets. But it also feels like once Bottlerock books them, they’re officially back to being too uncool for Coachella. I’d welcome it with open arms and vocal cords though.
