Thinking….I might be going solo without my usual group. What are the tent only options like? I know they’re there, but what pass do I need to get? Do I need a car to get to the campgrounds or can I take an Uber and walk in?
Edit: specifically I am thinking about flying into PSP and then heading to the festival. Is it possible/feasible to get to the festival site from there without a car.
you would need a tent camping pass and that's it. if you fly into PSP you can just uber over to the drop off point and haul your stuff directly over to checkin and set up in the lots. as long as you can carry your stuff you wouldn't need a car at all so this is definitely doable.
then you can just stop by our campsite when you need some shade and refreshments.

We Uber from PSP to the campgrounds every year. There are different drop off points depending on what type of camping you have but they are there and its possible.

I didn't realize that these new camping options mean that we have basically lost lot 5 completely. that's a bummer. first we lost lot 8 to preferred and now we lost lot 5 to glam. and to a lesser extent, preferred camping lost access to the first row of lot 8.
the best lot a GA camper can hope for is probably lot 4 at this point.
How much was the cost of the Uber from PSP to the festival site?
Don't remember exactly but well under $100. Nothing that caused me sticker shock. The great thing about the area is that it is already a huge vacation site for boomers, golfers, gay tourism, etc so tourism is a big deal so there are a ton of Ubers naturally. I've never had surge pricing and have always flown in Thursday afternoon where you'd think it would be crazy. Nor have I ever had to wait for more than a few minutes for one. it's pretty painless.
The one PITA is getting TO the airport from the campgrounds if your flight leaves early on Monday. We had to pay a shit ton of money to get the most expensive Uber option last year because we couldn't find a normal one.
What are the odds we get Despacio as a late add? It was one of the things I was most looking forward to experiencing at a coachella, so missing it would suck. LCD/Soulwax/Despacio all being MIA is the only real disappointment for me on the lineup(though the presence of so much cool 90s electronic acts does a lot to make up for it).
IMO there are probably hundreds of acts/installations that could get late added based on their availability (see the massive "possible" list from Reddit), and if we're lucky we get a few of those, so very low odds.

Yeah this is what I’m thinking. But on the other hand I might spend Monday in Palm Springs and stay overnight before flying out on Tuesday so it might not be a bad thing.

If that’s the case I’m not going to bother pulling up early for camping anymore
I just worry about capacity. At Portola which is like 1/3rd the crowd size of Coachella, she crazy overflowed the Ship Tent, which is only a little smaller than the Gobi, going against Disclosure.
I've never seen a truly popular act at the Sonora, how long approx do you need to line up/arrive in advance?
Any surprises? I thought horsegiirl would end up in the Gobi tbh feels like she is only going to get more popular, but this mean she will be going against the heavy hitters at night because she will probably close
Does this mean Fcukers is gonna play at like 2pm? Lmfao FML

honestly, I stopped showing up early a decade ago when reddit decided that showing up at 2am was the new normal. I gave up on lot 8 in like 2013 (2012 was that last year I camped in lot 8). I used to be able to roll up into camp at like noon and get a nice spot in lot 8 before that.
now I show up at 1 when there's no lines, the search is quick and I still manage a decent enough spot in lot 5, 10, or 4 without having to sit in my car for hours. lot 5 was the hidden gem the last few years though.

Really surprised horsegiirl is here and not early Gobi or Mojave and also expected Together Pangaea to be early gobi. But this does make more sense for them in hindsight

i remember knocked loose being at capacity about 5 minutes before they started weekend 2 but i think everyone shoved their way in anyway

Do we think the order of the billing is indicative of what time the acts will be playing? I was thinking that Horsegiirl would likely be near the end of the schedule and at the same time as potentially Green Day

*me showing up to the set expecting horsegirl band and not horsegiirl dj*

I’ve only camped a few times and have never understood the “get there at the buttcrack of dawn” mentality? Is it just cause people want to be closer to the gates? What other incentives are there? I love maximizing my step count.

Usually regardless of billing electronic acts tend to play the Sonora later, so I’d expect acts like Snow Strippers, Horsegiirl, HiTech etc. to play at night

For what it's worth, she started 25 mins before Disclosure did, and at that time the only real competition was the end of Viriji or Chase & Status. I suspect if she started in the middle of Disclosure it wouldn't have been as crowded, and there are a lot more options at Coachella. Wouldn't be surprised if they put her during Green Day.
The most popular acts I recall hearing about (didn't go myself) at Sonora were Magdalena Bay and TV Girl; when I've been in a long line to get in it's moved reasonably quickly, much better than Yuma. Not sure if being around other tents makes people more likely to say "fuck it" and walk away.

I think generally people want to minimize step count lol

I’d say low. James mentioned that Despacio is incredibly cost prohibitive when asked why they don’t tour with it more often. The speakers are custom and state of the art which probably requires extra care let alone the high cost of shipping internationally. I believe the equipment is housed in Ghent with the brothers.
Same with Soulwax. If you’ve seen them live this year, their stage setup is no joke, and unless they’re planning another US tour (which they should), the cost of shipping just for one or a few festival dates will probably be a net negative.
LCD on the other hand? While they do have a ton of gear and people to coordinate with, I think James and co are very happy doing their residencies and drinking natural wines every weekend at home. They’re in their Eagles-reunion show era until a new record comes out (which is probably next year).

it became almost like a game on reddit to see who can be first in line and get the closest spots. they drive around in circles waiting for the moment that indio PD lets them line up just to get that clout
Coachella was smart when they realized they can make a decent amount of money by just charging a premium for those spots, but it did nothing to stop everyone from showing up to get that tiny remaining sliver of lot 8. now it seems like coachella realized it can get more money by different glam options for lot 5. smart move I guess, it probably helps with lodging overall I bet.
setting up camp early is definitely nice, i'm sure, but i'm too old to deal with it!
