Shouldve switchEd Ice Spice and Chappell Roan on billing with their current statuses.
Just get Talking Heads.
They have to have Headliners that make people feel the need to justify the cost pretty much makes the case in itself. Are people going to keep coming to festivals for value now that theyre priced put of regular tours? Thats the question.
The latter part is a great point. i mean if they get olivia rodrigo next year, depending on the market u live in that pretty much covers the cost of the wristband alone. combine that with some strong second lines and another unique exclusive headliner and its much easier to justify the cost
Its been a thing for a while and I think people finally figured it out now that theyre strapped for cash. City fests offer the most flexibility cause all you gotta do is spread out those 2 or 3 current hot artists and theyll drop money on a full ticket or just for the specific day. Lolla is never going to stop having a K Pop act in their top 8 now because they will sell a ton of extra tickets on single days cause of it for example.
Like right now Outside Lands is in one of the best spots. They have Sabrina Carpenter headlining and her arena tour is sold out. Its the only way to see her for a fair price and you will potentially get whats going to be the fall tour setlist with a bunch of other acts thrown in there during that day. It should sell itself.

Not a single ticket package of OSL has sold out lol. Not 3 days, not single days, not GA or GA+ or VIP. Of all the fests, that one is not “in one of the best spots.”
For Coachella to succeed in 2025, it must follow the path of the always successful Lollapalooza. (Be centrally located in a major city that has a lot of public transit routes that allows tens of thousands of suburban teenagers to easily get to and from the festival)

This might make some sense for people who camp or live nearby, but otherwise, the cost of accommodations is much higher than the wristband.

Thats up to potential attendees to figure out if they wanna see her or not. Osl still played the long game and got Sabrina on the cheap before anyone else. Will people regret not going is the thing.

Camping is expensive? We saw how much camping became an in demand thing last year and it can happen again.

The two times I’ve stayed off site at Coachella I was able to rent a place 15 minutes from a shuttle ride for less than 600 bucks Thursday through Monday. If you’re able to control yourself from getting too fucked up to drive 15 minutes, there’s cheap lodging to be had.

even so, ive never spent more than 1200 weds thru monday for w1 hotels near a shuttle spot

Yea I always do weekend 2 which might have something to do with it being slightly cheaper. The two I stayed in were gated communities that were basically senior facilities on golf courses. Had a pool you shared with 4 other units. As long as you weren’t loud everyone was friendly. I prefer camping but I get why people don’t enjoy it.
Saw a post on reddit indicating that Despacio and Soulwax are essentially locked for 2025. Which means obviously James Murphy as well. feels like LCD will be there too…they (LCD) would certainly be the RTTD act.

I think a bolded sub headliner makes more sense. They’re too past their peak to be rttd now

Agreed. And I think as long as the headliner was someone James Murphy was be fine going before (The Talking Head would be great here) then they wouldn’t mind not being the top line act.

i honestly dont even think they would sub anymore, they strike me as either a 3rd on their day act or a surprise add

I see LCD as a sub with an empirically bigger #3 right behind them. Or they stick the RTTD on that day and they're essentially the #3 anyway, basically what they did with Blur this year.
Everyone roasted Blur's 2013 crowd size for years, and they still came back as a sub. Bjork is also significantly less popular than most recent subs. LCD isn't as rare as either of those acts, but they have history with the festival, and that still seems to count for something. Not sure they make the poster at all if they can't offer them better than a 3-4 spot, doesn't seem like Murphy's ego could take it. Could definitely see a "surprise" set times addition, though.
LCD is much better now than when they got back together in 2016. Their Glastonbury set was unreal, and I personally think their concerts in recent years are much better. They've only gotten more popular with younger demographics since then. Sure, maybe not an RTTD slot like I said, but they would put on an amazing set.
I do get where people are coming from on this - when they introduced the bigger name subs in 2023, two of them were former headliners and while I don’t think any of us were under the delusion Björk was going to have a huge headliner sized crowd anymore, it seemed like a good way to either have a huge act sub or highlight a rare artist. These days LCD is not particularly rare if you live in a major market and I do not believe James Murphy is one surprise TikTok hit away from attracting hordes of 20 year olds to show up. But that being said: I don’t think Goldenvoice cares about crowd size or enduring hitmaking status or whatever when booking artists and laying out the poster. It’s always a combination of factors, some of which seem obvious, some we’ll never know, and some that are probably stupid.
tldr: Goldenvoice will let LCD sub if they want to and won’t if they don’t. but also they’re probably not playing so who cares.
Edit: to wit I also believe The xx still has a pretty good chance of subbing and I have no idea why other than I think it’d be really funny if they subbed 3 times.
I think the last minute push to book Blur, an act that the average attendee does not know or care to know, confirms that GV/PT still care about retaining the festival's original identity. The old heads can and will grumble, but they did just let Orbital close a tent. So I fully agree with Shuck's tl;dr, it really isn't an issue of can/can't they sub.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I think there's a legit chance the XX headlines or gets bottom of the poster if it's their first announced show back.
yea i definitely think it makes more sense to expect The xx to headline or get RTTD. Jamie xx and Romy have attracted a lot of buzz with their solo careers lately and I think their audience is much younger and more in line with the current Coachella demographic. plus the added bonus of it being their first show back
do ppl really want The XX to reunite instead of doing what they are doing now alone? i def dont
Yes I’d love to see them back together. I also think it would be likely if The XX are booked, Jamie does a solo set and maybe Romy does as well since she didn’t have the album out when she played in 2023.
