I kind of get doing this for Sunday's headliner, though I hate it; at least on Sunday though, people are much more wiped out and likely to crash Sunday. But on Friday? Day one? For Lana? Give me a fucking break, I'm calling the consumer protection bureau. That Gorgon City situation will definitely be insane if that's the case.
Are we not expecting Quasar to be going during the headliner?
Thought Mikey had the scoop that it’s going until 11ish?

As it stands rn no. Should be 1-2 DJs before the postered artists who will play until 11 or so. Things could've changed though
Of course take with a grain of salt but from Reddit...

It’s probably because previous sets against headliners have been ghost towns

I feel like the crowd from anti up is going to be closer to Dolab rather than Yuma and end up with whatever closer is there- who will almost certainly appeal to that demo

Maybe they should try offering legitimate counter programming. It's not like it's been ghost towns for the last 25 years. They just started throwing cannon fodder in those slots, and there's no reason to. Jamiroquai had a packed tent against The Weeknd, just to throw out one example, but from 2019 on the counter programming has been weak.

Absolutely this. Jamiroquai had an amazing crowd. In 2017, they had Kendrick vs Justice vs New Order and everybody drew well. Beyonce had everything shut down for her which, I mean I get it - that was obviously going to be an iconic set. But now every fucking headliner demands it. Bad Bunny and Frank reportedly demanded it last year, now if this rando on Reddit is right so does Lana - so silly. Put Anti Up against Lana, put Skream & Benga against Tyler, put BICEP against Doja, all for example, and those tents are not remotely empty AND they would still have 95% of the headliner crowd as they would without those tents going.

Moving from Justice to New Order is still my favorite one-two punch

If people are not excited about the headliners then theyre just going to leave. Or even maybe just go to the merch tent and hope it goes fast. The fest wants people to stay and spend money. But if you got nothing to keep em there then whats the point.
And making all the stages dark so early puts so much more pressure on anyone splitting sets earlier in the day because its all bunch up. So youre gonna tell me this festival used to be non stop 12 hours of music from noon to midnight and now its gonna be 3pm til 11pm for 90% of the stages? Get out. We all thought fewer artists meant the schedule would seem more reasonable cause you could spread it out. Now youre just gonna squish it all together cause you need to appease Lana Del Rey of all people. If Taylor Fucking Swift got to do an hour guest slot during Lana then by all means. But that shit aint happening.

Tbh if Skream & Benga and BICEP were in the Sahara against the headliners, it would probably feel empty in that huge space.
I get why headliners want the field to themselves but with trying to get strong alternatives on other stages, I think in this festival landscape (and especially at Coachella) many of those top billed artists simply don’t want to conflict with headliners anymore.
I don't think this is necessarily the case. Weekend 1 last year had Boris Brejcha in the Sahara overlapping as well. And that was for Frank, which was - in theory - the kind of set Coachella would really want to highlight by having most stages empty. I think at least the Sahara is going, possibly the Mojave instead given Doja's probably got more crossover with the Sahara crowd anyhow than Frank did.
My personal hope is that Barry is closing the Gobi against Doja, a la Disclosure 2013. That's probably the best way to have him in the Gobi.
That Boris set was pretty dead though and pretty sure $uicideboy$ didn't draw a huge crowd either. Kinda makes sense to cut that slot if hardly anybody will be in there.
Took a food break during $uicideboy$ last year. Took me by complete surprise to find the Sahara so empty, especially with their decent popularity

I can't be the only one noticing that Supre is actually making sense occasionally this year lmao. Because this is spot on. I honestly love this lineup. The "Big 9" are weak for me but I have 800 must sees and the conflicts are going to be terrible. What is honestly pissing me off is that there has been an extremely stark trend over the past few Coachellas where they are both starting stages/fest later, and ending most stuff earlier, and booking fewer and fewer acts. And that's exactly what you are saying here...doors used to be 11, now they're 1, it'll be local bands until what, 3:30? And then if there are legit 6-7 acts in the Mojave each day, it's 3:30 to 11:00 (with 11:00 being the time the last act ends, not starts).
Assuming you have little interest in a headliner, they've shaved two hours off either side of many days recently. In the past you could easily rely on great stuff from 1:00 to 1:00, now it's 3:30 to 11:00, thats 4-4.5 hours of fun gone per day on the one weekend a year I get to be irresponsible. It's lame. 6 acts on the main/outdoor and 8 in Gobi/Mojave already felt crazy light and there will legit be days this year where it'll be only 5 on the big ones and 6-7 in the tents. 2013 set times had legitimately 8-10 on the main/outdoor and 10-12 in the tents (poster acts, that's not even including local openers).

I was picturing Gobi/Mojave type slots. But Sahara, yeah, there's no reason why it can't be Lana vs Anti Up, Tyler vs Purple Disco Machine, Doja vs John Summit or whatever.

Maybe cause this is my 20th year and I am extra pissed off at whats been going down and just want it to be really fucking good.
Like Glastonbury purposefully puts stage headliners all against each other ( with some slight stagger ) so you essentially have to make a choice due to proximity of stages. They never shy away from having great acts go against each other. Like Sunday in 2022. You had Kendrick vs Charli, Pet Shop Boys, Suzanne Vega, Bicep and Courtney Barnett. Everyone had crowds because hello, PEOPLE LIKE OPTIONS.

I've said it before and others have as well, but Sunday '17 with Kendrick vs Justice vs New Order, and everybody had a great crowd. That's how you end a weekend.

Exactly this, yes. I don’t need this fest to be Bonnaroo and go til 5am, but we’re getting less value for higher prices and it’s bullshit.
I have long compared Coachella to city festivals and noted that Coachella is effectively almost an entire day of extra music (three extra hours Friday and Saturday, 2.5 extra hours Sunday). That’s less and less the case unless you want to see the headliner. Shrinkflation of the worst sort.
ESPECIALLY for these headliners. Shutting down the festival for Lana Del Rey, who played multiple other fests last year as a #2 on her day, is absolute madness, and people will be pissed well beyond the reaches of our dinky message board.
You can easily have somebody in Mojave thatll draw go against any of the headliners this year. You can have something cool in Sahara. And both stages ( now ) wont bother the Main stage act at all. Shit, they could even keep Sonora going late ( except Sunday ) because its enclosed. Esp now with how the lines have been you get a semi decent name in there and the tent will fill up. GIVE. US. CHOICES.
Somebody the other day brought up Fever Ray and that 2010 Friday night was crazy. Jay Z had Fever Ray, Deadmau5 debuting the Cube and Whitest Boy Alive all against em. It was all amazing. We miss that.
Beyonce, Taylor Swift or Daft Punk are allowed to shut the fest down. Nobody else should be able to have the option of everything being dark.

And yes: put the counter programming in the Gobi, Mojave, Sonora. The Sahara is so massive now that I get why acts wouldn’t want to play it while a headliner is on - you need a huge crowd for it to not seem sparse - but there are ALL OF THOSE OTHER STAGES TOO.

Yeah I think at least a Gobi counter would be just fine. Lana doesn't do it for me so my options are hoping I get into Gorgon City, or hope my phone gets service to receive the DoLab text. A rock band or something would be cool for HL counterprogramming.
I don’t need this fest to be Bonnaroo and go til 5am
This issue is happening to Roo too though. It used to be that people would say Roo was the superior fest because it goes until 5:00am and everybody gets a full set (as if 90 minutes vs 50 of Matt & Kim was a selling point) but now most people get 60 minutes and outside of Pretty Lights, nobody is going past 2am this year.
Supres take re Sonora is a solid one too. After nobody went in it 2017, I understand that they've been conservative but the past few years almost everybody has drawn well, and last year there were enormous lines even. You can end the Sonora at night for PENNIES and theme it and treat it like a mini fest that's different each night.
Somebody said DRAIN, which is the epitome of a Coachella act, throw a hardcore party Friday night. Zulu --> DRAIN --> Incendiary or some shit, these bands all play like 30 minute sets or whatever with quick stage turnarounds. A tiny ass club in Reno has the budget for that. Then flip it the next night, TDJ does some extended trance thing. Then Sunday night, do something with hip-hop artists, Armand Hammer --> Clipping. This would cost nothing at all, these shows would fill up, it would be hella unique for Coachella compared to other festivals, all these acts would take low billing (well, maybe not Clipping but still).
Although now that I'm thinking aloud, I'm wondering if the shrinkflation is not to avoid increasing booking fees, but rather to try to get one shift of security for most stages vs two.
Okay I'll say it: it's time for a Coachella cum leak, even if its just a dribble. GV can only give us blue balls so many times before someone blows a load so messy that it scrambles the lineup placements.

It’s probably because previous sets against headliners have been ghost towns
