SPOILER ZONE! AVOID THREAD IF YOU AREN'T CURRENT. IF YOU READ USING RECENT POSTS I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YA BUD.
since i know a handful of us are watching week to week.
my favorite pod The Watch are doing recaps/discussion every week so check that out if you aren't already. but even if you don't like recap pods do check out the interview with showrunner/writer/director Issa Lopez because she is great and it will get you excited for whats to come.
really loving this show so far, loving the sense of place. so cool spending time in this fictional town near the arctic circle, it had me googling towns in that same geographic area just to look at pictures. crazy people live up there.
i love how it's just going to be night time the whole season (i'm assuming). it's so disorienting, don't know what time it is and people are like "well i gotta head into work".
i'm really really loving Jodie Foster. it's wild how quickly i forgot i was watching Jodie Foster but i do keep snapping back into it. assuming the season stays good throughout she should get an emmy nomination. so refreshing to see a female lead in a show that is also an asshole. she's not the 100% good guy or the fish out of water trying to do the good thing, she's just a tough asshole repressing all sorts of trauma. don't get me wrong i still like her but she is on bad behavior.
i don't think they made near a big enough deal about one of those guys just starting fucking screaming though. it's like it happened and they were like wow and then didn't mention him again. i mean that is wild shit right, if i was one of these characters i would've brought it up in every scene. like someone is like "this case is connected to annie k i know it" i'd be like "right, how about when that frozen corpse started screaming and it turned out he wasn't dead wow."
=google put an article in my news feed that pointed out something I didn't catch: Rose mentioned Travis' last name is Cohle, and apparently (i don't remember this, but it's a been a few years since i saw S1) Rust said he had a dad who lived in Alaska.
I assumed that when Jodie Foster was talking on the phone to a nurse (before she ended class at the HS to talk to the teacher) it was about that screaming non-corpse. But then he hasn't been mentioned since.
I'm really hoping this is like S1 in that's there's a lot of spooky shit but it isn't actually a supernatural type thing. If i wanted supernatural I'd watch that Josh Hartnett movie that takes place up north and it's full of vampires because it's dark all the time.
Yeah it was weird the screaming dude wasnt brought up again. They said he was in a coma though so I'm guessing he'll wake up at some point later in the season with answers?
Also a little disappointed in the revelation that the Clark guy wasn't among the dead, which is hinting at him being the killer or at least responsible for whatever happened. Probably/hopefully a red herring but we'll see.
There's a lot of polar bear/monster symbology too. The little stuffed animal. The vision of it in the streets. The young cop kid talking about a polar bear breaking into the lab and sending 'em all screaming into the night. The little boy's drawing of a monster-man thing from the story his native grandma told him. I think the 'she's awake' thing refers to some mythic monster spirit, which in the world of True Detective is metaphor for the monstrous things humans do under a cover darkness.

Really want to know what "she's awake" means.
i'm not a big speculator with mystery boxes typically, but i'm thinking we may be dealing with some sort of female-oriented ancient spirit or god. that this spirt inhabited Annie K, and the reason Annie K was protesting the mine was at the behest of this spirit. people from the mine didn't kill her, it was somebody who was trying to stop this spirit, likely Clark or the guys at the the research station. but killing annie k only put the spirit to sleep, and then she "woke up" possibly inhabiting Clark.
Clark could've been in love with Annie K and helped her to summon the spirit, or maybe when they had a relationship Annie K was already inhabited by the spirit and had Clark under her spell.
of course in the spirit of true detective i think it will be left vague enough that we won't be totally sure if the spirit is real or not, and ultimately it won't really matter.
as female-centric as this series is so far i don't think it's going to end up with bad men doing bad things. hell even the owner of the mine is female. i think no matter where you look it's going to be woman behaving badly, with some bad men on the periphery. and i think thats super cool.
I only watched season 1 prior to this and skipped 2 and 3. As far as I know the show has never firmly dipped into the supernatural, so I'd be surprised if this season did.

Love all these thoughts. Good call on Travis being Travis Cohle and rust saying he had ties to Alaska.
The podcast also noticed that the money for the lab came from Tuttle something, which was the same name as the shady preacher and governor in season one. Good stuff here. Loving it so far.
Kinda feels like they are relying too much on found cell phone footage. Also the possessed guy in the hospital was kind of corny. "Your mother says see you soon" Really?
Felt like nothing really happened until the end and then a lot happened super fast.
Seems like that's been the case for the last 2 episodes.
i think in the first two episodes i enjoyed the journey because it was so enjoyable getting to know this town and the characters in it. the "show don't tell" method of character development was admirable. stealing this from The Watch podcast but they could have easily had Jodie Foster or somebody else be the brand new person in town, so some other character would have to tell her "here is how things work in Ennis" but instead they steadily unfolded the history of the setting over time. that was cool. but by episode 3 i'm comfortable with my two leads and certain tertiary characters and Ennis, so the journey to the big bang at the end wasn't as interesting.

yeah it was a bit heavy handed. i appreciate this season leaning more into the supernatural then seasons 2 and 3 but that that went beyond flirting with it.
I'm really enjoying this season so far. I expect it will end up being my favorite season other than season 1, which is still the best single season of any tv show imo. I like the subtle nods to season 1. I didnt realize that the original creator has nothing to do with this season and it was all written and directed by a different person so maybe they will lean into more spooky supernatural type things with a person at the helm.
I’ve been having a weird issue with the music selections this season. Sometimes the songs have felt really out of place (Florence song at the end of E2). But this last episode nailed it. Especially this song. Hackman new record is so good too.

do y'all think danvers is catfishing hank? two times she's been looking at her phone smiling and typing and when somebody asked what she was doing she said "oh fantasy football" or "oh tinder". which maybe it is fantasy football and tinder, and i don't even know what the point of such a plotline would be but it's so cruel and i really like the idea.
maybe i shouldn't be reading true detective subreddit.

That would be beyond cruel, but the more we spend time with Hank, the more I'd feel he deserves it.

There has to be more to the complicated Danvers/Navarro relationship than we know so far. Danvers' explanation of the abusive boyfriend murder/suicide situation seemed weak. Who wants to bet that the boyfriend wasn't exactly dead before they arrived to the scene?

I mean he obviously wasn't as per the flashback. The question is was it Danvers or Navarro that took him out.

I assume Navarro and that Danvers is pissed but covering for it. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but there are enough alive/dead people on this show that I didn't immediately assume the guy's head turning around meant he was actually alive alive. It registered as more of a taunting from beyond the grave type of thing. I'll have to re-watch the scene.
I enjoy a theory that Navarro is falling rapidly into psychosis. If she's having active hallucinations, it would explain the orange boomerang thing and the bizarre final "EVANGELIIIIINE" scene. Otherwise it was kind of campy.

Psychosis would be a good explanation. I love the supernatural hints in this season but don't want them to go full on with it.
Maybe the "she" they awakened is some kind of microbe/virus that makes people go crazy. Maybe that's what was up with Annie K.

I'm also thinking it has something to do with the mine and a virus type thing. Like why everyone "sees ghosts" and why there seems to be a prevalence of stillborns. Idk how it would tie together though.

I’ve seen a theory online that the mine is contaminating the water making some people see things and the scientists found out about it so some of the townsfolk killed them so the mine won’t get shutdown.
Best one yet. They're setting up everything and making us care about people. I'm hoping they start the next episode with a long cold open flashback of Soleil (no idea on spelling and not looking it up) station so we get to know those cats a little. Then we're off to the races.
i have less confidence in the season as a whole with every episode, but it's still compelling television and i am looking forward to how it all wraps up.
actually secretly hoping they wrap up all the crime ghost stuff next week, then episode 6 Nev and Max show up to help Hank confront Danvers.
