Apologies cuz I know I've recommended it before, but if you're into movies and filmos you should check out the Blank Check podcast. They're currently doing John McTiernan, who made Die Hard 1 & 3, Hunt For Red October, 13th Warrior, etc. They just did Predator, so they're still toward the beginning of this miniseries.

This is a good reminder for me to finally imbibe The Elephant Man which has somehow eluded me. I rewatched Eraserhead last week and saw Blue Velvet in a theater this winter so have been back in Lynch mode. Need to rewind to a few of his films like Inland which I've only seen once. I caught his version of Dune at a sci-fi fest like eight years ago and even though I had zero idea what was happening it kinda ruled. Wanna rewatch that along with the new Dune before part 2.
As singular as something like Mulholland is my fav's The Straight Story. It's unlike anything else he's done and one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. 'Tis a thoughtful reflection on time and family. I grew up on a farm in the rural Midwest so its setting is also a slice of why it resonates. I always tear up at the end. If you're familar with Anne of Green Gables it'll mean even more to ya. It's almost never discussed with his oeuvre but ya owe it to yourself to see it. Streaming on Disney+ which I doubt can be said for any other Lynch film lolz.

It’s unlike most of his films but maybe the most like him. Or you could say it contains several running motifs that Lynch revisits but it isn’t concerned with the decay and rot under the facade.

Kevin Smith guests on the Die Hard episode. He knows Willis from Cop Out and Rickman from Dogma. Good ep, but they usually go through the movie beat by beat and in this one I think they just kinda shot the shit for three hours. I guess that's Smith's M.O.

Super-hot take: People hyped Halloween to me for a long time as the scariest thing I would ever see, then I watched it, and...meh.
1. Big Trouble in Little China 2. The Thing (Ask me on another day, and this is #1 - they're both great) 3. Starman (prime Karen Allen FTW) 4. They Live 5. Escape From New York 6. Assault on Precinct 13 7. In the Mouth of Madness 8. Prince of Darkness 9. Halloween 10. Christine
EDITED TO ADD: Shout-out also to the one-season Starman TV series, starring Airplane!'s Robert Hays as the same alien returned to Earth and reunited with his son to search for the boy's mother (played by Erin Gray in the eventual reunion episode). 11 year-old me loved this shit.

Cool story bros, #1: The 13th Warrior was the first DVD I ever bought when I bought a DVD player.
Cool story bros, #2: Back when I was a film journalist, I got invited to a press screening of the John McTiernan-directed remake of Rollerball, starring Chris Klein. Prior to the film, they played a pre-taped message from McTiernan. This was pretty hard on the heels of 9/11, and the U.S. was warring on Afghanistan. In the message, McTiernan gave a shout-out to the troops, and then set up the film by saying it was a movie about, "two young men who are also far from home," which...it was Rollerball. Strong work, John McTiernan.

The first Carpenter movie I saw was Escape from LA and I still love it. Still need to see Elvis.
My first one was In the Mouth of Madness, and I still have a real soft spot for it.
Last year, we watched most of his movies, starting with Assault on Precinct 13. I had seen several others by then, and I knew I enjoyed them, but the scene in Assault on Precinct 13 when the little girl goes back to the ice cream truck really stood out as a moment that solidified my love of his movies.
We tried to watch Elvis. When I searched on the main Roku search function, it said that it was available on Max. We turned it on, and it was actually the Baz Luhrmann movie. So sad.

I was going to try to do this, but I don’t think I can. After looking at IMDB, I’ve seen ten movies he’s been in, but it’s been twenty years since I’ve seen at least half of those, and my memory is not good enough to say how I felt about his performance in most of the ones I’ve seen, including Asteroid City, which I saw in the theater and don’t even actually remember him being in.
I wouldn’t have posted at all, but I did want to drop in and give a shout-out to Shadow of the Vampire. I enjoyed his performance in that one very much.
