1. Point Break - This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Everything about it is perfect, even when it's not (I'm looking at you, foley work during the climactic Keanu/Swayze fist fight that makes it sound like something's exploding every time they land a punch). 2. The Hurt Locker 3. Near Dark 4. Zero Dark Thirty 5. Strange Days 6. Detroit 7. K-19: The Widowmaker 8. Blue Steel 9. The Loveless 10. The Weight of Water

The only one I’ve seen is Point Break and I love that movie.

Point Break is awesome but also hasnt aged super well (many films of its era haven't) and it is also slightly tainted by that abysmal remake.
Oh, hard disagree. If anything, the remake just threw into stark relief everything that makes the original a masterpiece.
Out of curiosity, what aspects of Point Break do you feel haven't aged well?
Perhaps "hasn't aged well" isn't the most accurate phrase but it is a deeply silly movie. Just the concept of bank robbing surfers. Also must mention the deeply incompetent agents chasing them. And Reeves' character learning to surf in like a week. Not to say it is bad or anything. I do love the movie and if there was ever a movie to capture the essence of the "guys will see this and say "hell yeah"" meme it would probably be this one. But I do think ZDT is a near flawless film boasting an absolutely incredible cast that should be considered Bigelow's best work.

I dunno - to me, the concept of bank robbing surfers is a really strong one. As the movie says, they do their hits then get the fuck out of Dodge as soon as summer's over to let the heat cool down, then come back and do it all over again. I like that the stakes are small - they're just stealing money to fund living responsibility-free, not trying to, like, destroy the system or something like they were in the stupid remake, which to me feels much sillier - and the way it shows how Bodhi weaponizes the anti-system rhetoric. As motivations go, it all makes a lot of sense to me..and, as the movie points out, they typically never kill or hurt anyone in their heists, at least until Johnny Utah comes in and fucks it all up, so it all seems to fit.
And Bodhi, in general, is just such a great character, because you get the impression he's a true believer - I mean, he's willing to die surfing the 50 year storm rather than go to jail - but he's also deeply flawed in his idealism and willing to compromise what he says are his beliefs rather than face accountability or get caught, down to hurting people he deeply cares about. And, I mean, it is absolutely peak Swayze. The charisma is off the charts, but so is the fear when his carefully curated image starts to fall apart.
As for the deeply incompetent agents...as someone who watches Dateline every week and sees the way even bog standard homicide investigations with obvious suspects regularly get fucked up and drawn out for literally over a decade due to the incompetence of law enforcement, this may be the most realistic part of the movie.

I’ve only ever seen Zero Dark Thirty and Hurt Locker. Has anyone watched Point Break without nostalgia glasses? I’d take a chance but only if it’s actually good.
I feel like Ive ranked his movies a dozen times in the Film Discussion thread over the last 10 years but here we go again. Lets do Kill Bill as two films, even though Quentin only counts it as one.
1. Inglourious Basterds 2. Pulp Fiction 3. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood 4. Jackie Brown 5. The Hateful Eight 6. Kill Bill vol. 2 7. Kill Bill vol. 1 8. Reservoir Dogs 9. Django Unchained 10. Death Proof

Hateful Eight has climbed the ranks for me over the years. Pretty underrated I think.
I agree. I liked it when more than most when people put it at the bottom, but when ranking them all it's hard. A lot of these I saw in theaters and meant a ton to me at the time. Really solid filmography regardless how you rank em though
Something I love about Tarantino that doesn't get discussed enough is how he can get such electric performances out of his actors. I think Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa is not only the best performance in any Tarantino movie (followed super closely by Samuel L in Pulp Fiction) but also one of the greatest villain performances ever. Also both of Leo's performances in Tarantino movies are among the best stuff he has ever done, moreso than almost anything with Scorsese even. Same could be said for Brad.

But I did have to swallow hard and think about art-vs-artist when putting Kill Bill vol. 2 at the top of my list given what he reportedly did to get the performance he did out of Uma Thurman.

Someone chose violence today.
I likes what I likes. (To be clear, though, I just really love all of them, and I might rank them a little differently on a different day. Except for the Kill Bills. They’re just my least favorite of a great set of movies.)
My confession is that I’ve never seen Jackie Brown. It’s one of those movies I’ve been tucking away for a rainy day for so many years, and at this point I might as well circle back to it once he retires.
