how is caffeine and marijuana still here and yall are coming for fun stuff like alcohol and mdma
Before I had a kid, I would've been cool with caffeine going much earlier than this round, but it is quite possibly the only reason I've survived the past two years and change without at least one physical collapse or major mental breakdown.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

I'm addicted to it but it would be like having antibiotics win or something.
I dunno. As I've gotten older, the appeal of getting anything more than a buzz from booze has just dropped off a cliff for me. Back in, like, 2009, was getting drunk multiple nights a week - my band would bring a handle of Evan Williams to rehearsals and just about polish it off between the 6 of us over the course of 2 hours, and I was also going out after various theater rehearsals and knocking them back there. And then I'd get up and go to work the next day, and be OK, if dragging a bit.
Nowadays, being drunk just makes me feel, like, poisoned, and I spend the next morning feeling like butt. I mean, don't get me wrong - the mornings after a roll aren't a picnic, either, but I guess I feel better equipped to handle that than I am an alcohol hangover. Plus, I like who I am when I'm rolling much more than I like drunk jorgeandthekraken, who's usually maudlin and sometimes a real asshole.
all this, so much. i can count on one hand how many total drinks ive had in 2024 -- and they've all been spread out as like half drinks or a few sips of a friend's drink. i did dry january, which ive done before, but this time i was like "fuck i seriously feel so much better when not drinking" and the joy of not EVER having hangovers or hangxiety for this entire calendar year so far cannot be understated. i've had sips or taster pours when i like the taste of something, but that's about it.
molly hangovers arent fun, but my brain will just remind itself, "you used a lot of serotonin last night! it'll be back real soon" and that's that. with alcohol hangovers, as you said--i legitimately feel poisoned.

literally having more than 2 drinks in an evening can generate an anxiety spike for me the next day; my stomach and head might be fine, but my mental health takes a hit. and i am far from the only person i know who has this experience from just "moderate" (2-3 drinks, nothing crazy) alcohol consumption

I think there's a double standard with alcohol among otherwise open-minded advanced studies level drug people. Everyone posting in this thread knows it's too culturally pervasive, that there are illegal drugs on this list with either therapeutic uses or less risk that have been unfairly demonized while alcohol is available everywhere. But if you can accept that there are safe and responsible ways to enjoy mdma/ketamine/pcp/whatever, it's kind of silly to talk about alcohol as a one way ticket to existential hangovers and cirrhosis.
Tied. Which of these two are you going to reach for:
1) At a sporting event 2) At a concert or festival middle of the day 3) At dinner or brunch 4) Because it's Wednesday 5) Because it's hot outside 6) Because it's cold outside 7) You woke up with the shakes 8) At a wedding 9) You want to get hammered T) You have social anxiety E) You got dared
There is one right and one wrong answer for the tied competitors.
this really is just proving how problematic it is that a lot of people infuse alcohol use into so many aspects of their lives.
and kinda speaks to how nefarious alcohol marketing is; it literally kills hundreds of THOUSANDS of people a year, but the commercials we see for it are always positive, never speaking to the risks: people laughing as they clink their glasses together at a party, hot girls on the beach sipping cocktails, etc.
contrast that with the fact that the only commercials we see now (rightfully so) re: cigs are about how they can kill you, with people speaking out from their experience almost dying from cig use, etc.--and it is honestly fucked up. both are dangerous and can pose tons of severe health risks to its users, but alcohol marketing is always positive, never speaking of the dark side of using it.
While I agree with the bash on marketing, the sun kills a few thousand every year and the air and the water also kill millions of people every year. People should be semi-responsible and then they can have that ice cold beer, delicious glass of wine or tasty cocktail.

The day after molly can be pretty fucked up headwise

sure but how many people are doing molly multiple times a week versus drinking multiple times a week?
there is probably something like .02% of molly users who are dumb enough to try and roll multiple times a week, and im guessing it would be a short lived cycle because they'd realize it doesnt even work. tons of people drink heavily more than once a week. so it feels like a sorta disengeneous comparison in that regard.

My ranking of day-after feelings (assuming a serious indulgence - i.e., being decently drunk rather than just buzzed, full trip instead of micro-dose, etc.) from worst to best:
6. Alcohol 5. MDMA (as Rummy said, I can handle the sads since I know where they're coming from and always make space for self-care after a roll. But I do hate having to pee every 20 minutes the morning after) 4. LSD (admittedly, I only had the one experience and it was WAY TOO MUCH, but other than the lack of sleep, I actually didn't feel bad the next day) 3. Mushrooms (I generally feel just fine and sometimes even good/chilled out, but I've had at least one night of really fucked-up dreams after a mushroom trip and woke up the next day feeling blah, so...) 2. Marijuana (I know a bong-over is a thing, but I have never experienced it - always feel totally fine the next day no matter how baked I was) 1. Caffeine (hardly counts)

it really isnt a double standard... ive obviously drank alcohol more times than ive partaken in all the other drugs (except for caffeine, naturally) left on the list COMBINED. the point im trying to make is, the vast majority of people who partake in mdma/acid/shrooms/ket are doing so quite sparingly; yes, there are outliers who overdo it, absolutely, but thats the exception and not the norm. whereas with alcohol, hundreds of thousands of people in this country are majorly overdoing it, very regularly. with that,
theres basically a "safe and responsible" way to do any drug, even opiates. but the countless abusers of heroin/fent are killing themselves, just as the countless abusers of alcohol are. people who trip or roll once a month? not so much.

Sure. But if you’re drinking hard multiple times a week, you probably can handle it.

Tough to rank day after but Ima try.
1 Caffeine - unless someone took something they absolutely shouldn’t have (nodoz, sandoz, 4 Loko, fake speed or whatever), there’s no next day issues except for those who can’t get going without it which seems to be fairly prevalent.
2. Herbs - except for eating too much of them to where it carries on into the next day, non-issue.
3. Alcohol - I drink with water and don’t get hangovers. Sometimes I’d be tired in the morning but not drinking can cause sleeplessness for those used to hitting the sack with that booze buzz. One of my assistants was telling me as much today since she didn’t drink last night after a weekend of wedding shit and woke up every hour. She’s tired as shit today from not drinking.
4. Mushrooms - generally mild and shorter lasting. I have extremely limited experience. But one night I did some at 2am and had fever like dreams. I was in the Gulf of Mexico bobbing in the waves waiting for a tidal wave which came, I body surfed and crashed into the shore and died proving to myself that you can actually die in a dream and you could still come back.
5. (Tie) - I don’t want to know what L25 is these days. But we generally used to take it around 8-9pm and trip through the night. The next day was generally blahed and conducting business from bed. Molly makes me feel weird and drained of life the next day. Sometimes I’d get odd but minor chest pains and not heart shit just a burning. After PL Buku (2016 or 2017) I was sitting on the couch in the dark at 3pm scowling and staring into nothing alongside of a friend who was doing the same. After about ten minutes I brought it up and we laughed about it. But the damage to tomorrow had already been done. So for my money, these are my two worst ones as far as day after effects. I’ll never do L again though if I see it, I can start feeling it. Help!

accurate haha. the addiction/dependency factor of caffeine def isn't up for debate. but i do think this molly/alcohol debate could be punted to next round since we all seem to agree caffeine is great but not really a Drug Experience

with all due respect, you're literally describing a side effect of alcohol dependency there. if you cant fall asleep sober, that rly shouldnt be listed as a positive for regularly drinking haha.

it wasn't a positive per se. She told me that earlier. "Wtf is it with not drinking? I woke up like every hour last night and I'm tired as shit." It also could be that she said she mostly didn't get out of bed all day yesterday, but I didn't ask her if she slept or just laid there and watch tv all day.
^^ That's nearly guaranteed a headache and possibly nausea. I will be ingesting me some caffeine though at Bonnaroo. With the new green tea regimen I'm on, I'll have to make a couple of gallons to last me through the week unless the coffee people are also having teas. I never did get a tea at a festival before, but maybe?

Look, I like alcohol and drugs as much as a next person, but I will say if I had to give it all up, but could still have caffeine? It would be easier than quitting caffeine, I think.
