using this one is disingenuous because it can apply to literally almost any sport before 1900, because that’s when the Olympics added women. One of the sports added by the way, was golf.
It's not 1900 now or even 2000. It's 2024. And Augusta exists in all of it's (non)glory as a club that bars women and is probably rooted in racism and may still be - unless someone is a caddy or grounds assistant.
I switched. Was on Swimming because it's less impressive, but I forgot gymnastics has that extra layer of judges that rate scores based on opinion, whereas in swimming someone factually beats the other person.
Like boxing? It's often been political in the Olympics over the years where clear winners were declared losers by Cuban-Russian alliances. Diving would fall in this category too. But it's not golf.

I'm curious how early/late soccer will go. If it goes too early, we're a bunch of uncultured, provincial, dumb Americans, but if it knocks out one of the sports that's bigger here, then we're a bunch of poseurs pretending to like it for international cred, or something.

Lots of American kids play it too, so it's not an international thing I don't think. It's one of the most participated organized sports in the country. All 3 of my kids played it multiple years (as well as baseball). It's American [tm] now too imho.
Let's not fall into the "is this a sport" trap. These are all sports and that's why they're in the sports survivor
There are different types / levels of sport though. Some are more pure than others. As a skateboarder for 8 years of my childhood, it is closer to an art than a sport. It's similar to gymnastics in that way. Each run is a creative pursuit that doesn't involve an opponent or any concrete, agreed upon, statistical benchmarks that the "athletes" are aiming for. I love skateboarding so much and it is a part of who I am... I probably wouldn't vote for it until the final 5, but anyone arguing that it isn't a sport in their eyes has a lot of ways to make that argument convincingly. If we were only asking "which of these sports is the most pure," I'd vote it out immediately.

It's already been ruined by MMA going out, but I think it will be double ruined if the MMA voters hold to their logic and take out football soonish. If any sport that isn't a "game" makes it to the top 3, that will also be very stupid and I could see that happening.

They have racetracks now plus people have competed downhill on longboards for a long time. I was just a street skater with tricks I could do consisting of a wheelie/nose-wheelie, wheel grinds and 360. My youngest brother was into the tricks, handplants, ollies, etc. I couldn't do any of that shit but I skated all the time.

i imagine it'll get down to some combo of baseball, soccer, basketball, and football--and i will be yelling from the rooftops with you that football is so overrated.

I think Lacrosse should stay for a while based on the fact it's got some cool history rooted in Native American culture. Just because a bunch of douches took it over doesn't mean it's all bad. In my opinion it's a pretty fun sport to watch too, my little brother played it growing up.

Indigenous Lacrosse was a literal blood sport. Bring back the murder!
