I do not care about squash. At best, I am intrigued by cricket because I have watched multiple matches and still have no idea how it works.
Ruth shouldn’t go out early imo. Being GOAT has an icon element in addition to actually being good. Like you can argue that Barry Bonds was better but no one gives a fuck about him like they do Babe Ruth and that matters. (Babe Ruth was also really fucking good)
Being good at golf at Tiger's level requires a certain amount of athletic prowess that regular old rich white guys that play for fun just don't have. But generally agreed that Tiger probably shouldn't crack the top 10.

I would imagine a lot of people are prioritizing how the athlete competed vs their competition more than "are they the most athletic and technically best ever at the sport."
Some of these athletes are in specialized sports that a lot of developing countries don't have access to train in. I can't really take Michael Phelps and Simone Biles seriously amongst some of these other names.

Those two jumped out as me as sports having the biggest barrier to entry on practice area availability and equipment.
There's probably other examples but those two jumped out to me given the recent Olympics.
Less about popularity by country and more about feasibility by country.

Those swimmers and gymnasts can do things that these other athletes could never do.
You can say that about everyone on the list. That's why they are on the list.
My general stance is that if swimming training was readily available to every kid in the world and equally popular, I don't know where Michael Phelps would stand all time.

In case it isn't clear to everyone, you can find someone who is ripped as fuck and plays a game of cards. Their physique wouldn't indicate how athletic of an endeavor playing cards is.
Gotta be cheaper than an Olympic sized swimming pool.
I'm certainly no big golf defender and Tiger shouldn't hang around too long, but at least there is diversity in the backgrounds of the top golfers.
You got this all flipped. A bathing suit and goggles is a lot cheaper than a set of clubs. Lap pools are a lot more available than golf courses. Olympic sized pools are rarer but that’s a speciality just like a tournament caliber golf course is.
