I think the conversation about whether an athlete would be good at some entirely different sport is a red herring. Who cares? I think it’s fine to knock Gretzky because you don’t watch hockey, but no reason to speculate about his midrange jumper
I don't think that ability to crossover into other sports is a consideration, but there's definitely precedent in people getting penalized for a weaker competition pool. Babe Ruth dominated baseball in his time like no other athlete. People may (correctly) say Willie Mays was the better player, but Ruth wasn't responsible for who he played.
Also the specialized training to do any sport at the highest level is pretty inaccessible for most people
said this in the other thread but in the NBA of the top 10 players in the league right now: Giannis, Embiid, Kawhi, Durant, LeBron all grew up pretty much dirt poor. the sport found people in very unlikely places in Jokic, Giannis, and Embiid. its night and day different from McDavid, MacKinnon, Matthews, etc
Meh. I played ice hockey for 5 years and all of my gear was second hand for my first two years. Hell I even used rental skates for my first few weeks of practice. Sure it would cost more than basketball, a sport where you need almost nothing to play but a pair of shoes, but you don't have to be rich to play.
Why? She is the most decorated olympic, woman gymnast in modern times. She has like 10 medals and 30 world championships. Plus she competes in completely different events. It's not the same as being able to run catch or block when vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise are all completely different things.
Maybe not you, but misogyny and racism.
Ali said he was the greatest, but Mike Tyson during his initial 37 bout winning streak was probably better (then Buster Douglas knocked him the fuck out). Possibly Marvelous Marvin and Roy Jones Jr. were better. And f'n George Foreman is in that conversation too.

I was one of two voting for Jordan last round (at least at the time of my vote). I just think he’s the only person left that isn’t the greatest of all time at their sport

The problem making high level youth sports prohibitively expensive isn’t usually the gear, it’s the travel (all sports)and training (most sports, almost all individual sports) cost.

In the opposite way (I'm assuming), at this point, it feels weird to have two basketball people on there, and Jordan's career feels more impressive.

ice time is actually the true expensive part of hockey
I don't think it's misogyny or racism to call Simone Biles the 9th best athlete of all time.
Maybe you don't. But some of these voters clearly are both. I participate in most survivors. sang knows it too as he frequently has to call out the silent haters for their prejudices.

Okay, but so what?
crushing in a small pool is less impressive than crushing in a large pool

I think all these pools of players are sufficiently large that we don’t need to weight them by how many people play.
Also I don’t really know a ton about all the players you mentioned above, but at least for LeBron, even if he was dirt poor he still had the opportunities to play on AAU and go to private school that a lot of other kids don’t have, and that kind of development matters.
Maybe it is recency bias but I would think that Simone is more dominant than Serena?
just what i found on a quick google search. not taking a side, just sharing info
Serena Williams won more Grand Slam singles titles (23) than any other woman or man during the open era in tennis. In addition, Serena and her sister Venus won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three doubles gold medals at the Olympics.

Okay so just recency bias 👍
It also gets into the problem we have at this point in that everyone left has had a really impressive career and choosing between them is going to get harder and harder.
