Don't be afraid to not be seeing a band play. Feel free to go check out the movies they are showing and definitely check out the vendors in Centeroo. I got this amazing book on how to reconstruct tshirts last year and got to reconstruct a tshirt of my own for free!
Bring some entertainment for the mornings. Before everything starts during the day it is nice to be able to chill at your camp and play a game or something. Last year my friends and I brought Scrabble and had a blast playing that. If nothing else bring a deck of cards.
Explore. There are so many things going on at once that it can be hard to catch all of it. I know last year one of my fave things was after the mainstage show was over I went to go check out the fire art and the static electricity guy. It's a ton of fun and alot of the are is really cool.

Bring a bigger bag then you need, and toss it all back in there at the end of the weekend, if you can fit the bigger bag in the car. Thats a perk of driving solo, get to throw all my nuts in the back seat.
Wait you get to drive alone no fair... control of the radio, climate, car and camp site all to yourself... I take that back it would be lonely... So ok for a first time rooer... how many is too many for a carpool and for a caravan how many is too many cars as far as the logistics go... I think so far we have tentatively four in the car and three cars in the caravan
I'm driving alone this year... the only thing i'm worried about is the drive home. Probably I'll have to stop and take a nap at a rest stop! Please Please Please DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING A RESTED DRIVER. BE SAFE.
Last year my friends and I packed 5 into my dad's mini van for the long haul from Connecticut. We were so jam packed when they opened the side door for the search, some stuff came tumbling out. As a result we were hardly checked. They probably didn't want to deal with getting all our stuff back in!

be careful dude, its good to see that you understand the importance of a good rest. I drive an Ambulance, And have learned much from my father who was once a Truck Driver.
Dont follow the lane lines of the road. You'll tend to get mesmerized by them and can quickly start to doze.
You probably have a 17 hour drive at least, I'm from Longisland and its around 15.5 with no stops. The ability to take an hour nap is wonderful. give yourself plenty of time. I'd tell ya to take the ferry and meet up with me and my buddies and we can caravan it. but my blokes arent the social type. Be safe though, If ya see a Grey scion XB loaded to the max, give us a honk!

As a first time Roo'er I thank all of you for all your advice! You old timers sure are helpfull and nice! hehe
I'm also driving by myself (unless I can convice on of my fellow inforooers to come along) so my drive is going to be about 24 hrs. It would be nice to save some money and sleep at a rest area, but I don't know how safe that would be for a single chick to do...

Thanks, I'm actually driving down from southern ohio this year which is only about a 6 hour drive (according to map quest)
Side note: I did not expect to buy anything really at Roo (I could barely scrape together enough for the ticket) but I ended up dropping $50 on a sweet hammock chair. I'm so happy I had the extra money for the impulse purchase, I sit in it almost everyday and read!

Don't sleep at a rest stop.......you don't want to end up a statistic. That $35 at Motel 6 will be money well spent....

You're probably right... though some of those hotels are pretty shady themselves. I'll just carry some mace and do my best to look like a butch b*tch that would rip your balls out in a heartbeat hahaha

Hmmmm........yeah, just give them that same "avatar glare." I know I would take a step back! ;D
It is reallly hot. And there is nowhere to go for 4 days to escape it. Seems obvious, but doesn't really sink in till you feel like you're gonna combust.

So first off this thread definitely has some good info, and having been trolling this board at work for countless hours a day, it's a keeper!
Don't go too hard too quick. Last year friends on mine came down and got in early to BFE and starting drinking... before the sun came up... Needless to say they had no shade and when the sun was up and in full force it almost ruined all 4 of them for the weekend!
I HIGHLY recommend a camelbak (Easy to find them on sale). I always had a backpack/water supply on me. I also froze a bunch of those mini poland spring bottles, and each day before heading out I would cut the tops off of two of them and pop them into the camelbak. Lifesaving!
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

I can't emphasize this one enough..... I live in middle TN and am very used to the summers here. It still did not prepare me for not really being able to escape the heat or the sun for that long. It can be pretty harsh.

If you find that rare, magical, perfectly clean portapottie that you've been dreaming of all weekend make *sure* to stay in there long enough to lay a deuce. You won't regret it.

This is a great one. If you wake up early they are cleaning them you get a fresh one right off the bat... Hit that up with some clorox wipes and go to town!
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
be conscious that you are (most likely) traveling with others - be accommodating and be aware that what you do affects others (both in your group, and in 'roo on the whole)
pace yourself while drinking! that beer bong may look like a good idea, but when you wake up under a tree and have only vague memories of the band you were looking to see, you'll be disappointed (spoken from experience)
be open minded and don't be afraid to cut out of a band you know you want to see for a band you've never seen if the former just isn't playing that well (or if your spot sucks)
get to the acts you REALLY want to see earlier than you may think - i was stuck way in the back after getting to Ween too late in '07, missed the opening song and left early cause we were just too far away
wander into things you don't know what they are. in '06 playing ping pong on an xbox 360 was a great way to spend an air-conditioned half hour between shows, and we went into that tent just on a whim. same goes for this random air conditioned tent in '07 with chairs and all sorts of crazy stuff. a/c stops are key
and most importantly, don't be afraid to break off from your friends. don't miss out on stuff because you were afraid of losing your crew. you'll meet up with them at the end of the night and you'll all have great, individual stories to share.

Go into the silent auction tent. You can stand in front of the air conditioners for a little bit. And there is a lot of cool stuff to look and maybe bid on if you find something you really like.

Having slept at quite a few rest stops in fear of falling asleep at the wheel , I wouldn't worry too much about being a "statistic". Tips if you're going to do this: 1. Try to time your driving so that you'll be tired and then awake by the afternoon/evening. Daylight and having people around is always comforting. 2. Park away from the restrooms. You don't want car doors and loud kids waking you. Find a spot that's all to itself. 2a. But also, park facing away from the "hot" areas. Even if you're far away you want to make sure no one can actually see you in the car. Away from the entrance..towards the road. 3. Lock the doors. Common sense. 4. Lean the chair back and relax.
Of course..use your best judgement, and if it doesn't feel right then get a hotel. But this has always worked for me, and when you need to freshen up for the road, there are vending machines and restrooms right there.
Dont sleep in a rest area, if you're coming from the north stop at the hotel i manage in cookeville, its about 70 miles away and i can get you a nice room for $35 including tax an all
If you are from the northern parts of the country, the heat will beat the hell out of you. Plan on drinking water most of the day and have your meals after the sun starts to go down. Food will look good during the day, but your stomach will not like you if you eat too much in that heat. At night keep an extra blanket close because you will go to bed warm and wake up freezing at 3am. I lose around 7 pounds each year at Roo. ;D

How nice people are! I saw very few "shady" looking people and felt safe 100% of the time. Everyone acts like a huge, motley family and it is the greatest thing ever. I stopped at a nearby Kroger store on the way back home right after roo and I felt like I had to "re-socialize" myself into everyday encounters with the "outsiders", i.e. people look at you strangely if you smile and say hello to them in a grocery store and have never met them before in your life? Hmm...? Wierd.

I'm a first timer myself, but I can give a handy tip I've picked up. If you feel yourself dozing at the wheel, and you fear you won't make it to the next rest stop, open up your window and hold a $20 out. Hopefully, the fear of dropping it will keep you awake long enough to get to a safe spot where you can take a nap.
