I'm wondering what people suggest for creating shade around the edges. Like hanging tapestries/old sheets on the sides. Just wondering what people have done that works.
I'm looking for a really cheap idea that gets results.

Probably the cheapest solution is to go to Dollar Tree, Dollar General or Big Lots and get cheap tarps and bungee cords. Sheets work (and look awesome if they are tie-dyed), but I'm not sure how you would securely hang them without putting holes in the sheet. The tarps have grommets already on them for hanging.

another idea for the sheets... call hotels/motels around you, ask if they have any sheets with stains/holes/burns that you can have for free. We (at el super ocho) have a big bin of sheets with stains or some other sort of badness. we try to remove the stains first, but eventually their just trash. especially with it being this far away, you can call a couple places and see if they'll hold them for you. It may take a little effort to find the right place, but they're free and you can tye-dye them yourself. Even better, bring a bunch of sharpies and have people autograph your shade tent sides. That would make an awesome homemade free roo souvenier. Hmmmm... in fact, i may do it myself
one thing ive found is that if you do use secured tarps on your shade tent is to not leave it with the tarps hooked if your leaving camp for a while. seems to make them more likely to flip over and break.
i like tapestries. they let the breeze through and there are so many cool ones to choose from.
Yeah I use a couple of tarps tied to the frame with rope and use duct tape between the grommets, if the wind starts blowin hard it will rip the grommets out.
What I did was I tied one of them to the cross beams and then stretched it out to the side and staked it out to make a triangle. Then I set up my backpacking 2man tent under the tarp. When there was any wind at all the tarp caught the wind and it blew directly into my tent. I slept until 9:30-10 at least everyday....
This works a lot better in tent only where you can actually get a breeze and arent all cramped together.
Have you guys found at all that the tarps actually make you hotter? We were thinking of putting them around our ez up last year, but we were concerned that the material would create an "oven" effect and bake us. Any thoughts?
Yeah I only use two, I have seen people box themselves in and it does get hot. Proves to be most helpful when it is raining. Rather than keeping sun off. But it always rain at Roo. The tarps were a lifesaver in 04 it was raining sideways.
looks like its between 28 and 32 cents a square foot. so it would probably cost more then the ezup does. but it sounds like incredible stuff. says it lower temps by 12 - 14 degrees.
I have only looked for a few minutes but it wast so bad. I mean yes a good bit more than a tarp but trust me this is no tarp. It was hot last year and I stepped under one and it was seriously a very noticable difference. I saw on Froogle someone selling it for 6.00 a foot.
I was looking at some aluma-whatever (it's spelled correctly on the front page but I'm lazy) websites on the 'net and it seems that a lot of people use it when they go to Burning Man. People on a BM website said they wouldn't have made it in the heat/no shade situation without it.
Also, there are different grades (high grade = high price) which alter the amount of sun that can enter/pass through it. One of the sites said it wasn't available in the USA, though. But the poster above said they saw it on Froogle, so I guess it is possible to get our hands on it.
Does anyone know the cheapest or cheaper places to look for an EZ-Up? I dont care about spending that much for one, but if I can knock a few dollars off here and there Im all for it. Ive been looking at their website but also ebay and amazon. They all seem to be around the same price. Any other suggestions?
I have a quik shade I bought at Sports Authority for last years Bonnaroo. It works great and I've used it probably 10 or more times since then and it's still holding up fine.
