Okay, like many others it's going to be my first time at Bonnaroo. First and foremost I'm there for the music, but of course I want to experience everything. What's your experience to have a good balance with a) seeing lots of bands b) seeing your favorite bands close c) drinking (and for some MJ) d) seeing everything else at Roo, and e) of course being wide awake for the late shows?
When I go to concerts I like to drink (some nights just a drink or two, but others I drink with friends a few hours before the show). If I drink a bit too much it's okay; I can still have a great time but just pay for it the next day. But with Roo I don't think you can party every night and still have the energy to enjoy the bands for 4 days straight.
So what do you do? Do you plan to say only have a few drinks each evening? Do you have a nap in the afternoons? Do you take any uppers to keep you going?
How do you keep your energy level up for 4 days and still have a fun time partying?

Just sleep soundly when you can and eat and drink a lot of water. Theres not much of a system to it, its mostly just will power. If you want to stay up for latenight, you will.
"Chicago is known as the Windy City, and Montana is called the Big Sky State, so I think that we should somehow combine the two to create the ultimate kite-flying experience. "-Mitch Hedberg
read up in the camping part of inforoo. you have to find ways to cool your tent off and sleep late. if you can pull that off, then you can stay out till dawn, get 6 hours of sleep a night, and still find a way to see all the music you want to.
as far as me personally, i wouldn't go drinking a bunch of bourbon/scotch out in the sun. i would drink a bunch of canned beer though, most of which being at night when its cooler outside.

this is exactly part of what i intend on doing in order to last. drink water when the suns up and everything else once the sun sets. im optimistic that this will work.
I've always drunk lots of water at hot fests but at Coachella last year I switched to Gatorade and it really seemed to make a difference. I always sneered at folks who'd pay for flat salty soda, but something in there really did work.
I also seek naps during the day - find a set with a laid back vibe and stretch out near the back.

for me it was weird. i was so excited to be at bonnaroo i felt energized all the time. i could fall a sleep whenever i wanted, when i woke up (no matter how little i slept) i always felt perfectly energized. anyone else in my boat?

in my past experiences.. too much excitement gives me insomnia. this almost always happens when i go on short weekend trips where i have changed time zones.
so i am almost guaranteed to have this happen during roo. nonetheless im psyched for it .
p.s. good call on the gatorade. i love the blue ones. i guess those electrolytes really light you up! but the problem is warm water = ehh ok, still drinkable. warm gatorade = no way am i drinking it.

have been to the last 4 'roo's and here is my plan of action. get there am thursday party all day this is the day to eat a few good meals (get a good base for the weekend). Get to sleep by 2am the latest and u wil get a good sleep until 9am. wake up friday well relaxed NOT hungover and eat a good breakfast. If u do this u can run yourself ragged for the next few days and be alright. I guess the main problem I see happen to people is they go balls to the wall on thurday (which is fine) but get no sleep and don't eat properly and are trying to catch up the entire weekend and it never happens. I also suggest tons of gatorade drink a 16oz before bed each night and u will be golden.

a) bring like 3 or 4 copies of the schedule (you'll lose a few) and a watch or something to keep track of time. to keep from overheating during the day, bring a lot of water and as you cross the fields between tents/stages run through the fountain...its only cold for a little and you'll be practically dry in like 30 minutes with the heat. if your friends are on the fence about who they want to go see or get tired midday, tell em where you're going and arrange a meetup time...don't wait too long or you -will- miss acts. b) i can't comment. i hate getting up close because i have no room to sit/lay down if i want a break, and otherwise i'm dancing my ass off 90% of the time so i need room and i aim for middle-back of the crowd, usually towards the right (pre-arranged 'desired seating area' between my group of friends for meetups) c) i don't drink at all at 'roo. i tend to pass out quickly past a certain level of drunkenness, and i don't deal well with hangovers. anything else, be aware of your surroundings when you choose to indulge. d) man there's just too much to see everything, unless you can live with only seeing a little bit of everything i really wanna make the cinema tent and silent disco this year, just had too much other stuff to do during the nights last year. e) in all honesty, i found myself getting a large surge of energy when the sun would set for the day and the temperature got down to more comfortable levels. but try and take a break & eat either during, before, or immediately after one of the pre-headlining sets for evening energy. biggest secret for me personally...time your indulgences properly
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
Don't drink alcohol in the midday heat. Only take substances, including alcohol, when the temperature drops after sunset. This will take you FAR at Roo.

Ahh, youth is bliss. I went balls to the wall for 3 days straight in 05', and was still lucid when i got home. Only two years later i dont think i could that anymore, which is just fine with me.

then just keep it cold ???
hahah. very true. im picturing the weather to be soo hot that my ice is constantly melting and my gatorade warms up before i even have time to bring the bottle to my lips.

extreme? LOL.
Yea just a little.......camelbaks actually keep beverages real cold"like"
I've mentioned it before in other threads, but my trick was to put Gatorade powder in my Camelbak, then once I got into Centeroo, fill it with a one-gallon thing of water (you're not supposed to walk in with a full Camelbak, and only sealed water). Having the sugar from the Gatorade throughout the day helps a lot, not to mention all that scientific electrolyte stuff.
Now, before you leave, you freeze said gallons of water, and that will last for a while. At the bottom of your cooler, get some dry ice, and put some wet ice on top of that. If you have a good cooler, and do all that, you won't need to bother with buying ice at Roo and everything will stay cold.
If you get stuck in BFE camping, grab your stuff and move to tent only. We didn't know about this option in 05, and that two mile walk from camp to Centeroo just sucked the life out of us.
I found it best to not bounce around from show to show. Take some time to sit down in the back for a couple shows that you want to see. Taking a load off for an hour or so during the day will really help you later on at night. Just pace yourself.

we chilled at camp in the mornings, having a beer or two and smoking a little, of course loading up on food and water. then as the bands we wanted to see started playing, we ventured to centeroo and found a place to chill where we could still see the bands. usually this meant being near the back of the tent or under a tree, but if we felt the urge we could get in closer and dance for a bit.
chilling on friday, watching mike gordon > ricky skaggs > oysterhead > petty. we had our indulgences before oysterhead, and a little more before the late nights.
one of my secrets is not trying to see all the bands you like. choose a few full sets to watch (or watch half the set, then move on, don't try to see every band on the schedule, because you'll miss the best songs - murphy's law)
i can't wait! nap under a tree if you need to. sleep when you're dead! whatever you do, you will have fun (as long as you aren't drinking liquor in the mornings and trying to be in full party mode by 3 oclock)
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
My problem is that I'm pretty much the certified driver for our party, or I have been for the past 2 roos. We leave around midnight on Wed. night/Thurs Morning, and usually have camp set up around 11am. After this, I'm pretty exhausted, so I'm out of it all day Thursday, but usually turn in early and get a good 8 or 9 hours sleep. This goes for the other nights too. I try to come in a little early from the late night shows so I can get alittle more sleep b/c I usually wake up by 7 or 8 on account of the tent heat. I'm going to try to make some more late night shows this year though. We usually bring our empty water bottles into centeroo, probably 2 or 3, and just fill them up at the water stations. That usually lasts us through the sets.

Dont run through the fountain, that water is nasty. If you do, only Thursday, after that, that shi t is brown.
Yeah, it still looked gross to me. I ran through it once, against my better judgement. I dont know man, I have enough of my own hippy funk, I dont need to swim in other peoples.
edit--- Besides, the damn thing was only on half the time anyway. Haha. I guess thats to filter the water or something... I dont know. yuck!

I don't think I can reply to most of you, but great answers. I'm typlically one who has a lot of energy, but for me (like someone said above) when I'm too excited I can't sleep well, and at times if I drink too much one night I'm gone for the next day or so.
From what I gathered, a good sleep on Thursday night, lots of food and water during the day (stay away from the alcohol), and drink mainly in the evenings should work well.
I'm so freakin pyched - Stripes, KOL, the jam bands, the night shows - not sure if I can wait 110 (days w/o well taking it easy) ???
My routine last year, which seemed to work a hell of alot better than in 04, was Jager and Red Bulls in the morning. Catch a nice buzz before heading to Centeroo. Then Gatorade and water all afternoon and evening long, with maybe a few beers thrown in for good measure. Then when the sun goes down, do whatever the hell you want.
I tend to stay in "balls to the wall" mode the whole weekend and still manage. And with all the fun and excitement you won't sleep very much. Or at least I don't. Just make sure you eat at least once a day, stay hydrated, and get SOME rest and you will be good to go.
