;D
Hi this is going to be my first time going to roo and I'm so excited. I wanted to ask if any has advice for me on how to set up camp. I'm going with my friends. We have two cars (SUV and camry) with two 10'x8' Coleman Kenai dome (4person) tents and maybe one canopy (havent decided if I should get one yet).
Should we like park the cars together and share a common space(covered by the canopy)? Have the tents facing each other or side by side? Basically I'm trying to think of how we would use 2 lots. What worked for you. There is going to be 5 people in my group and I'm one of the ones seriously into all the preplanning and have greatly enjoyed reading these forums.
I would like some good ideas and when we get there decide on the best plan when we meet our neighbors.
Any advice I'm grateful for. Diagrams would be awesome!!!
Park your cars as far away from eachother in your row as you can. Set your canopy up between your cars, and pitch your tents on either side of the canopy. this way, you can partially shade your tents and maximize your space. you should also consider going tent only.
And don't lag when you arrive. Get there and claim your space or someone else will take it. You NEED a canopy for shade or you will not be happy with yourself. Seriously, if you have five people, and you all pitch in 20 or so you can get one of those ez-ups, but there's a whole different thread about shade tents and canopies in here. Whether or not the tents face each other is up to you guys i guess, just try and maximize your space.
Last year we all jumped out and started unloading the car by throwing stuff around to claim territory, this is one of those times when being timid won't pay off, others are also going for as much space as possible, you need to make sure you have room for your tents and a canopy, it sounds rude, but it needs to be done to insure enough space to have a camp.
Canopy is a MUST! The Tenn. Heat is nothing to mess around with, also, as it was mentioned, park the cars on opposite sides of the lot set your canopy up in the middle and the tents on the outside of the canopy, and 'chill' spot will be very much appreciated after an entire day of walking/partying! ENJOY your first Roo!!

"They" kinda try to create grid-like camps but, it DOESN'T work.....at all! Just get out of your car and hurry your ass off getting set-up, claiming as much space as possible in the process. No hard feelings.....EVERYONE does it. My advice is to practice setting-up your camp a few times before heading for Roo.....or AT LEAST your tents. Pack-up your car so that your tents are the first things you unload. This makes it alot easier to get a decent ammount of space in as little time as possible.

its really sounding alot worse then it is. its not some mad rush for land. we have never had a problem with space and we have a pretty big camp. like others have said just when ya gett there take your stuff out and set it in the area you need for what you have. then set it up. you dont want to go exploring roo before setting up camp because the space will fill up after a bit. i wouldnt stress about it at all. every one is friendly. if you do need more space ask someone if its possible to move something. most rooers are more then happy to do it.
I have a question about the diagram above...see where the green cars are at the top? Do they have space in front of their cars? I guess I'm asking if there's only one row of cars, and if so, is the space for tents in front of each car or behind each car?
they try for a grid like set-up, but like others have said it never works, where we parked last year even after everyone set-up camp there was still a huge pocket of space no one claimed (like 40ft x 30ft), so some people spread out a little more and by the end of the weekend others set-up camp there (we were really close to centeroo) but there was more room than anyone would need.
i still wouldn't delay in setting up camp so you can get the spot you want, just say hi to your new neighboors while you throwing your stuff on the ground and mention that you'll share a beer/smoke with them as soon as you get set-up. it's usually a good idea to have your tents and canopies already out of their stuff sacks so you can get to work as soon as you're parked - gives the passengers something to do as you're going through security and being directed where to park.
It really doesn't matter to me which side of the car we tent on I guess...I was just wondering if we had to share space with the cars in front of us or if there was more than one row of cars...if we'd be parked and have another car in front of us as well and either use the front or back depending on which side of the row we were parked in.

EDIT: Changed crappy "visuals" after the following two posts after this one to try and be clearer on what I mean.

i like the car tent tent car car tent tent care best but my new question is. once you park there im guessing you are not leaving till the end of roo right? Cause well you are blocked in ... can't leave early huh but like who wants to?
I'm excited yet tired from making my flagpole all day using leo's guide but I did alterations to make it my own. People at homedepot are nice
This is my first time at roo and I want to be prepared and so when I get there I will have a great time! Whoo hooo!
once you park there im guessing you are not leaving till the end of roo right? Cause well you are blocked in ... can't leave early huh but like who wants to?
well i won't say it can't be done, but i will say this: last year, every car i saw trying to drive around prior to sunday (getting out or whatever the reason) was on the verge of meeting a terrible fate. i saw people almost getting hit, i saw a chain link fence get run over (that may have been intentional though, as running it over opened up a -great- walking path , saw one narrowly miss 2 tents. i assume these cars all made it to their destinations as i didn't see anyone getting towed.
so what i'm saying is you can go over niagara falls in a wooden barrel, but that doesn't mean its recommended
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
but my new question is. once you park there im guessing you are not leaving till the end of roo right? Cause well you are blocked in ... can't leave early huh but like who wants to?
we were lucky in a campsite last year - if we had wanted to leave early or do to the store - we could have because we were on the end of a row next to a large open space - perfect spot for a 'roo virgins - hope we get that lucky again
