I found that I like the ones w/o spreaders but it's just a personal preference. They seem little more stable and usually a lot cheaper. But many people like spreader bars so... Of course I have 11 brothers and sisters and grew up 3 to a bed so maybe I just like a snug bed.
If you want to occasionally lie two in a hammock, the spreaders are better.
Also as far as size, the ends may stick out of the canopy but that's all. Also they are easy enough to move in and out as needed or even take apart if you need room. The frame just snaps apart and back together in seconds. It is a bit big to haul (each piece is abour 5-6 ft long) but I have a truck so it's never been a problem.
thats the other problem i have.... getting it down there, it looks big. any ideas of how i could get one that breaks down smaller? think i could make one? would pvc hold up?
PVC is too weak. The frame needs to be metal or wood, which is the problem with breakdown and hauling if you dont have a truck. You may have to go with the portable ones listed in the post. they don't look as comfy (though they may well be) but you can haul them in the truck of a car.

Another option would be to have it shipped to Manchester (either to a nice Roo'ers house or to a UPS store), then just pick it up on the way into Roo. And when the festival's over, just re-box/ship it home.
I suppose. The problem I am having is that I don't even know how I am getting down there, Its looking more and more like I'll be taking the greyhound down, and if that happens, no hammock for me. Thanks for the help...
You sure I cant make one out of pvc? Im not very big.... hehe. Thanks for the help guys
I have made a folding display screen out of pvc. It wasn't made out of very strong pvc, just needed it to hold jewelry, but it was still kinda' heavy. In order to make one strong enough to hold even a hundred pounds, I would imagine it would be heavy to have to maneuver on the bus.
I will be thinking about this, too.
I know you are a great googler, I'll bet you could even come up with a pattern for a PVC hammock stand since furniture of that sort was so popular a few years ago.
What type of hammock do you have. I have been looking around and the stands seem to be either for the ones with spreader bars or without them.
In short, I have some T posts and a post driver. If the ground is soft enough to drive posts in deep I can bring some and everyone tie to them. We just pull them up afterwards.
The other is a frame from stuff I have laying around (chain link fence posts and pvc fittings) that might work and I could haul down and back.
Dani, if you end up going Greyhound keep in mind that back in the day they were a big outlet for shipping packages, not just people. They always had plenty of room under the coach. So I am sure that (for extra $$) you can package up extra stuff outside of your normal luggage.

Hey Dani, check out this portable hammock I just found at Bed Bath & Beyond.......it could be ideal for you, since it collapses down into it's own carrying bag, like those camp chairs you see everywhere:
Roorunner, man, I would never have taken you for a "bed bath and beyond" kind of guy(tee hee), but that hammock rocks. It looks perfect for 'roo.
But back to the fence posts, troo, I spent hours looking around about hammocks and setting them up on this darn dial up my sister has to use out here in the country.... One thing that I thought of that might be easy to bam into the dirt is those L-shaped fence posts for wire fences that have those slots to hold the wire fencing. I don't know if I have described this well. Some of them are pretty strong, especially for a lightweight like boom. I however would need a stronger one. ha!
How big is your post driver? Is it a power tool or manual?
What I was discussing was the T-post for wire fences (Probably the same thing you mentioned). The post driver is manual. It is a weighed tube, open on one end which you use sort of like a sledge hammer. I have about 50 posts in my barn thanks to George W's last campaign (long story)
My thought was to drive them at a 45 degree angle so the force of the weight tries to drive them in further instead of bending the posts. It wouldn't hold a heavy person but maybe a light to medium one. I plan on trying it here first and will let you know. If the ground at Roo is soft enough but not too soft it may work.

LOL ;D
I wasn't actually SHOPPING there (not that there's anything WRONG with that! ), but I happened to open up one of the flyers they're always mailing out. Glad I did, though....
Dani, check out this hammock that was in the K-Mart circular. It is a folding one that will make transportation easy. It is only 49.99. I am going to go see if they have any at my local store.

stumbed upon this at d!cks sporting goods and remembered this thread. A little on the pricey side though. You could likely create this yourself much cheaper.
It looks as though you just screw an anchor into the ground and tie the two wooden standards to the anchor, with the standards then sitting on top of the ground.

I had a "well, duh!" moment when I saw it. The set up may involve a little math, so you might have to set it up before the drinking/other partying began.....
It would work, I think, as long as you dont move around too much, heh. It would help to dig them in just a bit, I think... maybe combine your idea of digging them in, and the rope. Extra strong.
