This year will be my first time attending Bonnaroo. I've been told the security won't let you bring everything and I know the heat is going to be crazy. I figured I'd run it by some of the veterans on this forum to see if they think it all will fly.
breakfast - I'm planning on bringing nonperishables for breakfast. I need something to eat in the morning; I figured that stuff like bagels, cinnamon buns, and donuts will be sufficient enough to get me by. I might bring some milk, because I love milk and a go through about 1/4 gallon a day at home, but I don't know if I'll be able to keep my cooler that cold or if I'll have enough room.
lunch - For lunch I'm planning on just getting a whole bunch of sliced deli meat, a loaf of bread, some condiments, chips, and other snacks. I'll stick the lunch meat and stuff in a small cooler that I have. I was thinking of just packing myself a sack lunch every morning and throwing it in my backpack with my drinks (which should consist of a 3 liter Camelbak and a 1 liter Nalgene). I heard that you can obtain tap water for free inside the venue, so I was just going to bring some powdered Gatorade to mix it with.
As long as you're planning on buying ice (expensive and long lines) it's okay. I freeze all my water and use it for cooling but it's melted by Sat. so lunch meat, mayo, milk etc won't keep w/o ice. Powdered gatorade is good and chips and cookies/donuts and such are okay (as long as they don't melt (ie chocolate.)
I bring granola, pop tarts, etc for breakfast, skip lunch and eat dinner at camp. Dinner is usually something pre-prepared and just needs warming for Thur (quessadillas), something hot and easy for Fri and Sat (Hot dogs/ burgers and gumbo) and eat canned food Sunday. That way I've never bought ice and have a good meal each day. If I get hungry for lunch or a late night snack, I'll buy something. In'03 I spent nothing the whole weekend (except on unmentionables)
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

the question i have....
How do you keep your meat fresh? i don't want to put ground beef for hamburgers in the cooler with my beer. just bring an extra cooler for meat?
Just put any meat you bring in a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. That should keep your burgers from getting wet and your beer from getting bloody. Also, you can freeze your hamburger patties, wrap them up and put them in freezer bags (double bag, just to be sure). They'll thaw in no time. That's what we do.

I'd say only bring the lunchmeat and other such perishable sandwich items if you plan on eating them BEFORE you leave your campsite for centeroo. that stuff will not stay yummy for long in that TN heat in your backpack (unless you bring some sort of cooling device, which isn't really even worth the trouble), and you most likely won't want to walk back to your campsite to eat in the middle of the day.
I've heard so many stories on these boards about people throwing food away after roo. for that reason, I'd only bring things that are EXTREMELY convenient to eat and/or take with you into centeroo, otherwise they'll most likely be tossed out as you leave.

we always make burgers hot dogs the first night and then not for the rest of the time we are there...nice to begin with some homecookin'
that sounds like a good plan! eat it before anything has a chance to get yucked!
there is sooooooooooo much good food at roo (and pretty reasonably priced, especially out on shakedown!), i'd be sad if i had every meal already planned out and couldn't explore! then again i love food, probably more than the average person ;D

Im obsessed. Bobby Flay is my fake boyfriend, I even got to meet him!!!
anyway to be back on topic, another thing we always bring is a HUGE loaf of bread or 2 and cheese - to make cheese sandwiches, I know it sounds boring but its really good for some reason and doesn't go bad.

i love giada
also back on topic! i brought very little food, since i flew in, just snacky things like dried fruit and granola bars etc... i found that i wasn't very hungry at all, probably because of the heat, but when the hunger DID finally strike (and oh, it struck with a VENGEANCE) i was surrounded by a plethora of yummy food choices, more than i could even comprehend! so yeah, i'm kind of biased in leaning toward the ease and variety of buying food there. plus, where else can you get fried alligator! ;D

(giada rocks)
I would have to agree, there is SO much good food at roo. In 05 we had the best chicken in a tortilla thing EVER and we managed to find the dude again in 06! so yummy
and yea i wasnt hungry much either (just thirsty thank God for the frozen lemon ice) until it was dark out.. then I usually had a bite

I found out my first year that bringing a bunch of food turned out to be a waste. My tip is to make everything before you leave home, if you going to have sandwiches make them and put them in ziploc baggies and then put that in a tupperware container just to safe guard it against water. Prepartion for food isn't what you want to do while your AT Bonnaroo, besides it will be hot and you'll be hung over, so don't forget the Emergen-C powder too.

I went there for a bday party and he was there, me and my best friend went up to him and told him we loved him and that we love when hes on Iron Chef, and we asked how we could get tickets to see Iron Chef and he said it was invite only - stupid us should have asked him to invite us!!!!! anyway that restaurant while being expensive (not ridic tho) was SERIOUSLY some good eating
we're buying 2 dozen NY bagels, a Hunkin piece of Kielbasa straight from Polish town. A few packages of Ramen, Bunch of apples (best way to snack on the road.) and some instant oatmeal.

For foodstuffs I am going strictly non perishables. Lots of energy bars and a few MREs. I intend on eating roo food for dinner and MREs/bars for lunch/brekkie

omg. the bagels out here in ohio are all wrong and i can't find a decent slice anywhere will you please bring me 8 thousand bagels? haha!
i plan on eating my friend at bonnaroo... that way there'll be more room in the car on the drive back. ew. jk. peanut butter sandwiches and some power bars will be alright... last year we brought food to make and we just ended up buying stuff from shakedown & centeroo
one day we had these things that were like corncakes with cheese on top. oh man. ace! wish i could remember what they were called
Anything you have to cook is a bad idea (even if cooking is defined as "boil water and add").
Bread is not a great idea if you are not very careful - you will be surprised how it can go completely moldy in just 12 hours. Heat and humidity can kill you and your food.
Really, think of things that keep well, don't mind being banged around in a cooler and are self contained meals. Purchasing food is a very good idea - if you factor in the cost of ice, waste, time, etc.
Suggestions (there have been some good ones - like powdered Gator Aid or Power Aid to add to water). But also, Starkist flavored tuna packages (great in wraps that survive well in coolers with shredded cheese), Quaker Oatmeal TO GO, carrots, peanut butter & jelly on the item of your choice - crackers work better than bread, cheese sticks, raisins, canned fruit (great cold from the bottom of the cooler), salsa & chips.
All of the above work well in camp and if you don't eat the items they can travel home with out waste.
We brought all kinds of stuff last year - not gonna do it this year - will bring tons of fruit cups tho - we ate those like they were going out of style.

Karma to all who participated in this thread. Its reminded me of last year, I used dry Ice,regular ice,and frozen water jugs/bottles, but still on the first day my meat was already thawing out, so I had to grill most of it, and throw away some. luckily I was VIP last year, but not this year, the humidity is a real killer, so this year I plan to grill the first day, but for the rest of the time I will be eating peanuts, peanut butter, crackers,Beef Jerky, carrots, celery, apples, oranges, granola Bars, pringles, doritos, I am on a much tighter budget this year, so I welcome all suggestions.
So I just read this thread, and all I have to contribute now is....
...Damn i'm hungry...
wait, I have more to contribute now.
Bobby Flay is awesome (meeting him wasnt as exciting as meeting Rachael Ray, but then again I dont want to do the things to him that I wish to do to her...mmmm... Rachael Ray.....)
I plan on eating my fair share of these grilled cheese on shakedown that I hear so much about.
Im also bringing a car full of Guinness, that counts as food.
"They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon."
I way overplanned the food situation when i went in '05, which was my first time. I was pretty far from centeroo, and most of the food I had planned didn't get eaten. i made quesadillas at one point and had burgers, hot dogs, pasta salad (a specialty of mine), and really, we came home with more than we cared to, and hadn't even opened the pasta salad we had carefully prepared.
i forgot one key thing and should have known better about it. hot weather pretty much kills my appetite for normal food. fruit and snacks I'm better with, and a larger meal towards the end of the day (when it cools and I'm very hungry). Plus it's already hot and cooking and heating things up is not a pleasant thought.
So, this year, my grill just may only get used Thursday afternoon / night and Friday morning breakfast. I spent the extra money for VIP, which includes a lot of food, and other comforts, so I won't have to worry about lunch and dinner so much. Our food will be easy snacks like granola bars, trail mix, fruit snacks (there's a great organic fruit leather yum), and other things like that. quick and easy and no refrigeration required.
For those that are not in VIP, i'd recommend you bring as little as possible that requires refrigeration in terms of food, and purchase your meals in centeroo or shakedown. Cooking just seems like way too much work on top of hiking from BFE and just keeping yourself together.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
i totally love the barefoot contessa and alton brown - I have learned and tried a lot thanks to their shows. and I like Ace of Cakes. That show is awesome and Duff cracks me up.
