I've been perusing this board for a while now & haven't seen many comments about sleeping bags. It appears some people use them while others say it is too freakin' hot to even think about it. Is a sleeping bag really necessary or would I be better off just bringing some type of inflatable/foam pad to sleep on with a light blanket or sheet? What have all of you Bonnaroo vets done in the past?

Definitely a yes... it serves as either a heavy cover if its cold, or a pad for your mattress if its warm. Make sure it is the slicker nylon infused material - there is nothing worse then your body sticking to your all-cotton sleeping bag because of dew, sweat, other fluids.
Wow! Everybody talking about the cold. I missed last year but I've never brought anything but a sheet to cover with, and I sleep outside in a hammock. '04 after the monsoon was chilly because everything was wet but I usually am too hot at night. But maybe that's just me. I will bring a blanket now just in case now.
BTW, I would bring a sleeping bag. If you're warm like me it still makes good padding under you.

Yep some nights get pretty cold. Thursday night last year I was fully clothed in my sleeping bag But by around 6am when the sun comes up that changes fast. I think the other nights I slept on top of it.

However you sleep, be prepared for a quick exit! Being able to transition from the cold at night to the heat in the morning can give you an extra hour of sleep

We always bring an air mattress. This year, we're bringing a heavy blanket since Thursday (last year) was so damn cold.
you know im glad everyone else is remembering how damn cold it was on thursday last year. It was the worst night sleep EVER. I had to wake my brother up in his tent get his car keys out and find some warmth in the damn car
..and holy crap i cant believe how high my karma is..

Yeah, when I woke up in the middle of the night that night, I decided I must be sick or something, because I was fuh-reezing. But then I looked over at my best friend, and she had taken every article of clothing out of her bag and covered up with it. That was such a bad night for sleeping.
I thought freezing on Thursday night (I brought only a sheet, so I had all my clothes wrapped around me!) was the worst ... until Sunday, my mattress fully deflated and it rained, so thanks to that wet puddle sleeping experience I decided to buy a cot for the first time this year! I'm bringing one of those fleece sleeping bag liners for covers.
Thursday 06 was a little scary, since I was thinking "maybe it's going to be like this...every night!" and we had not much in the way of warm things. I recall shivering, covering myself with just about all our luggage, and snuggling for warmth. We had one fleece blanket that covers about 3/5ths of me...I had cold feet.
If you can squeeze some warm sleeping gear into your luggage - bring it.
Becca - congrats on the karma - i think whatever I've lost over the last few days went to you since karma is neither created or destroyed, but a constant in the universe.
we've got fleece sleeping bag liners that are light and compact...not too hot.
Yup. This is the way to go.
I brought a fleece bag with a couple of small spare blankets rolled up with it, just in case. This year, I'll probably bring a full bag, if only for a little more cushion -- but we'll see see.

I guess I'm the only one that LOVED the cold night on Thursday last year. I had a sleeping bag and used it that night. The other nights I just used a sheet - it's scorching in the tent by 8AM.

Thursday night I sleepwalked (well, I don't remember going for a variety of reasons) to the car because I was so cold, but I tell you what, it was anything but cold when I woke up at about 11 AM on top of what used to be chips and various bread products, if I stayed passed out another hour I may not be typing this right now.

lol, that would explain why you loved it
i wasn't prepared for a cold night and only had a thin/tiny travel blanket with me, my teeth were chattering all night and i was waking up every 30 minutes from being so cold! covered up with towels and clothes, but it didn't do the trick.
moral of the story: BRING THE SLEEPING BAG or a HEAVY BLANKET, you just might need it!
What a bunch of pansies. I'll be in the fountain all day, every day. The brown is just a little silt from the well being pump at or above its capacity.

I'm still torn on which type of sleeping bag to get.
nylon or cotton? hmm....
Nylon: packs small, pretty warm, stays dry, a little pricier
Cotton: bulky, very warm, holds moisture like a sponge, a little cheaper
For 'Roo, go for a nylon 40 degree bag. When the sun hits your tent and you start sweating, you'd be suffering in the cotton bag. You'd also have to find a dry spot to let it air out before crawling in again that night. And heaven forbid it rains and your tent leaks... that cotton bag's a gonner...

Is that really what it is or is it really recycled water?
