Boyfriend caved and now we taking an airbed. I was so not going to sleep on the ground if I could help it. So my question to you guys is. Am I suppose to do anything with a new airbed to help it from deflating? Analogous to seaming a new tent to waterproof it? Should I test it out or just keep it in the box all nice and package and not taking up space. A friend has a battered powered airpump I can borrow. IT uses 4D batteries. Usually in your experience how long does the airbed last? Cause I think ill be sharing the pump with a friend there who has a twin airbed. I bought a queen size. Advice and reccommendation on how I can have a comfy slumber would be great. ;D

my experience with airbeds in the past leave me with believing none of them are good, the first nite you should be ok, after that you will probably be pumping it back up regularly
Answer to everything you asked is "It depends"(Sorry) Better mattresses last longer than cheaper ones, though any should be good for a weekend. Battery powered pumps can last long or short times. The more batteries the longer, generally. I would inflate the mattress before i go to test for leaks so you can return it if it's defective. Then deflate and pack for Roo! Save some pump power as the mattress may get low from cooling at night and need more inflation.
Hints: If on rocky ground, put a blanket under it to protect from puncture. Bring extra batteries for pump. Make sure you have a leak repair kit (usually comes with it or costs a few bucks) just in case.

Thanks troo karma for the info. Where would I find these leak repair kits. I looked around the airbed section in the stores and didnt find repair kits.
you can find repair kits wherever waterstuff (like tubes/pool inflatables) stuff is sold. We got two things - one are some self sealing patches from a company called wetseal and another is a little bottle of liquid sealer that you can use to repair small leaks fast
Should be in the air mattress area in Walmart or any other place. Will have a tube of glue and some clear plactic you can cut and glue over the hole. I know Walmart/Kmart/Target has them here.
If they don't have there where you are, I know Lowe's/ Home Depot will.
I also used acrylic paint to patch small holes.

I've used an air mattress several times, and I have a bad back, especially when it comes to sleep. My experiences with air mattresses haven't been very good ones, they always deflate and if you are sleeping with another person on it, it's nearly impossible to get comfortable... BUT those are just from personal experiences, I'm sure the mattress I had was a cheap-o, but to try and combat the comfort factor I would recommend putting like two sleeping bags on top of it, unzipped covering the whole thing, that way it will give you some extra cushioning and hopefully make it more comfortable for your sleep time
This how I rate sleeping arrangements when camping. Of course I sleep outdoors.
1 - hammock, if possible, nothing is better. Not tent friendly 2 - cot, cool and comfy. will fit in decent sized tent 3 - mattress, sleeping on hard, rocky ground is not good 4 -pallet of blankets/sleeping bag, better than nothing 5 - on the ground, when you're tired enough you can sleep anywhere.

We used an air mattress last year and had no problem with it deflating. My gf and I both slept on it everynight and it still stayed completely inflated for the entire weekend. Houseguests have slept on it several times since Bonnaroo and it still seems perfectly fine. It only cost about $30 and we've definitely got our money's worth.
Oaty - good to see ya! we have given up on the air mattress - ours from last year just does not wanna hold air longer then a couple of hours - gonna get a pad and blankets and sleepo that way
I've never owned an air mattress that worked. They always deflate and my ass ends up on the ground. I strictly use pads. I invested in Therm-a-Rest toughskin pads last spring season. Nothing better.

i like air matresses. a friend the other day mentioned you have to be careful when getting off of it to reduce puntures. were they serious? I couldnt tell how would me hand or feet puncture the air bed. im not made of pin and needles.

After some friends had stayed with us for a few days recently, we left the air-mattress that they slept on inflated for the next 2 days because our dogs loved laying on it. They definitely weren't gentle or careful about getting on and off and it still stayed completely inflated until I decided to put it up.
This is the first and only air-mattress that I've ever owned and it gets a lot of use but, it continues to work great over a year later. Maybe we just got lucky or something. I don't know.

I got the ozark trail queen size velour air bed from walmart cause I don't know any better. Is it decent? Or should I find another brand of air bed. Trying to find reveiws on it online.
I can't reccomend any specific brands, just that you do get what you pay for. I got one from Target last year that worked pretty well. I still have to test it for this year. I would imagine that the Coleman one's would be a step up.

I can also recommend Coleman, personally I don't like the mattress top on that Ozark Trail model. I prefer a waffle-style top, for some reason it seems to distribute weight / air more evenly.
This is the matress I have tinyurl.com/35msmz , and it cost just about as much as Ozark Trail.

Okay you guys convince me to go coleman. Going to return the ozark today at walmart and heading to target. Thanks guys. Any other stuff I should get there since I'm at the store? Like a round of beers for you *winks*
