so yesterday was my day off work and I decided to take some friends up on an invitation to go 30 minutes out of town to a lake party. There was much fun and jetskiing to be had, which i had never previously done. Ok, but here's the bad part
you had to repeatedly get off the jetski on the way out to the deep part of the lake and remove the weeds from underneath so that it would go. One of these such times, I gashed my big toe on i don't even know what on the bottom of the lake. it felt like a big broken cinderblock. my friend did his best to bandage me up using masking tape as makeshift butterfly bandages, but when i got back into town around midnight it was still bleeding so i went to the ER.
So, 2 hours, 4 stitches, and a tetnus shot later, (no pain pills! what the hell is that?!) i'm a little concerned about roo and my ability to walk to centeroo if we're put out in the boonies. assuming i can just toughen up and deal with it, that still leaves the problem of the stitches. They gave me the "real" ones so they wouldn't dissolve too fast but i'm supposed to get them removed and there's no real way to avoid it being during roo.
so what should i do? do you think the medic tent would remove them, or should i just keep them in to long? leaving and going to the hospital clearly won't even be an option.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
I'm sure the medics could remove them, I had some stiches out at the doctor's office last week, but never saw a doctor. A compentent nurse/first aider with clean equipment can do it no problem.
If you're into homeopathics take Arnica Montana (bruising) and Ruta Grav. (wound healing) for a faster recovery.
Good luck with the healing!
EDIT: And they told me that there's no such things as leaving them in too long, though the longer they're in, the more scarring there'll be.
I'm sure the medics can remove 4 little stitches, it's just a couple of snips with a pair of snips and tweezers to get them all out.
I totally understand being injured at 'roo. I've never had a year where my feet were completely healthy. Wear good, stable shoes and wrap it up. It wouldn't hurt to use duct tape on the outside of the bandage, just for insurance.
I have a pre-roo shiner. Apparently I fought somebody Yesterday though I don't remember it. He got my cheek and busted my lip a bit, but from what I am told it was a "You should see the other guy," situation.
It's all good though, my dad used to box so I'm treating it with all the old school methods. I should be looking all like Brad Pitt again by thursday lol.

I hear submerging wounds in salt water helps heal things real quickly, but I also hear it hurts like a beyotch... so, if you're up to it you could make a nice salt water bath for your big toe while drinking a bottle of whiskey to ease the pain. sounds like fun to me.
Keep the stitches in and have them removed when you get home. Your biggest concern is going to be keeping the area sanitary. For your sake in particular, I hope we get no rain. Otherwise, you'll be stuck in closed-toe shoes with a very painful foot. Even if it doesn't rain, you're really going to have to focus on keeping the wound clean. If able, you should try to get a physician to assign you a disabled permit for the weekend, and then bring crutches in case you really need them. It's too hot down there to walk from BFE to Centeroo on crutches or a bum foot, and discussion on this board has suggested that the disabled access area had excess capacity in past years. Again, though, I'd leave the stitches in. There's no risk whatsoever in leaving stitches in for a couple additional days, especially on your foot. There's much greater risk of reopening the wound and getting it infected as a result of the stitches being removed. And if you can't get in the special access area, I'd make a point of befriending the golf cart and gator drivers and take advantage of their spare seats whenever possible. Good luck.
I thought I was going to have to miss Roo altogether. I was outside of a bar three weeks ago on Sunday. Had been drinking all day and did many shots of tequila. I have no memory of the indident but from what I had heard there was a huge fight outside the bar involving about 10 people and like an idiot I started taping the fight with my digital camera and someone cold cocked me and I hit my head REAL hard on the cement. Woke up the next morning in a pool of blood and wound up in the hospital for 4 days with bleeding brain and all (six staples in the back of my head). The doctors said I should be fine to go to Roo but I still have massive headaches and will have to take it easy (haven't drank since the incident but will plan on having 6-7 beers a night during the festival. I guess I am not used to getting attacked like that since I am 6-3, 225 but I guess you live and learn to stay away from stuff like that.

So are you actually taping the guy that cold clocks you, because that would suck if you lived the whole thing and then on top of that you taped yourself getting cold clocked. I hope you feel better and if anyone needs some medical help me (becoming a nurse) and my friend (in school to become a doctor) could help out to a limited capacity but it should be best to just go to the medic station because they can properly clean and sterilize the wounds.

Haha. I have no idea what happened I just heard from second hand accounts but my camera is nowhere to be found I am sure the perpatrator destroyed the evidence!
I would leave the stiches in until after roo or they fell out, whatever happens first. And if you can refrain from sandals that might be a good thing too assuming the injury isnt so bad its uncomfortable to have closed toe shoes on.
Regardless I wouldnt let it stop me from having every bit of fun I had planned on ;D It would probally take the loss of a limb or total paralysis to put a damper on roo.

I know whatcha mean, The very first 'roo, my friends and I were all at my house getting ready to go. The cars were packed and I go outside to check on things, I stepped right in the middle of a fire ant hill, I got bit about 10 times on my right set of toes. Within 20 minutes I started to swell and red splotches appeared. (Keep in mind we were minutes away from leaving) I had to rush to the hospital and get THE SHOT or I would have died.
My now husband and I sent the rest of our crew on to Atlanta where we met up with them at a hotel at about 4 in the morning. I went to my first Bonnaroo on steroids and with amazingly itchy toes.
BE VERY CAREFUL with yourselves. Anything can happen.

it sucks but you will be able to deal with it. Last year I poured boiling water on my fingers on Friday morning, the medics came to the local pod and did some handy work, the gentleman was a doctor / nurse, and told me to visit a hospital once I left. Long story short, the med tent in centeroo WILL HAVE MEDICAL STAFF who can remove stitches.

My brother just stubbed his big toe on his good leg after getting over a stubbed big toe on his other foot from a night of copious amounts of alcohol (prob broke it but just let it heal on its own). To say the least I laughed out loud after I heard in the background a thump, and then followed by an "AGHHHH....SHIIIIT not again!!".

I have been so careful in the last few weeks to not get injured pre Roo. Last year I had pneumonia in May - ok by roo though.
Well, since I have been slathering this self tanning lotion all over my body for the past month in preparation for this year, I had a momentary lapse of reason and decided to lay out by the pool last thursday w/o sunscreen. BAD DECISION. I didn't even know that skin could be this color of red - I'm neon - front side only, of course. Hopefully it will be better in a few days.
Sunscreen - don't just bring it, use it.
I once went to the beach with stitches in the bottom of my foot. I just duck taped saran wrap around my whole foot everyday. I did stay pretty clean.
Thats a real bummer that you opened up your foot. My suggestion and its what everyone else has mentioned here, me being a clutz, and having 5 kids, HEY! I've always taken stitches out myself. BUT There is an MD here, Great offer to visit his RV. Go for it! But maybe an MD could elaborate on this idea I have, I would almost be more inclined to leave the stitches in until after Roo, its only 4 days, and that way your wound won't open up again. I've on occassion cut myself open and when the stitches came out, I had opened it up again. Outside looked healed but the inside was still trying its best to heal. I TOTALLY believe in Neosporin. In fact, I'm happy someone mentioned it because I' have to pack a tube for us. Its does do what the commercials say, heals so much faster! But truly, non of us except teh MD are Docs here, just experienced parents and victims, I'm interested to hear the Docs response to leaving stitches in a few extra days.

Should certainly be no harm in leaving them in a couple of extra days. Your ER doc should have given recommendations about this topic. i would have to look at it to tell you the true advantages/disadvantages but I doubt taking them out would give you improved flexiblity or use. As everyone else has said, keep it clean and dry and I would stay off of it as much as possible. Moms typically give better advice than us....
Call the Bonaroo people and ask about accessible camping. Just explain your situation (4 stitches bottom of foot / toe, walking not easy, etc. See what they can do for you in advance.
You should also call and ask your doc about leaving them in. At minimum, ask a nurse practitioner or someone at the hospital where it was done. My suspicion would be a couple of days is no big thing but I had a segment of a finger amputated a couple years ago and the stitches came out a hair late and I healed a bit too fast. The skin in my finger had grabbed ahold of the stitches pretty tight and removing them... well... Ouch. I mean OUCH. Like holy mother of hell god almight DAMN that hurt. That lesson taught me something: stitches out on time. I'll spare you the gruesome details but let's just say it involved a lot of numbing cold spray (very very cold) and two very strong nurses.
All that said, if there are no complications and all is easy, then any med tech or nurse can remove stitches. It ain't hard. I would not do it myself, but I am also a big wimp.
By the way, if you are wandering arounf Bonnaroo and see a square-looking thirty-something guy who can only count to 9.75, that would probably be me!
But I've heard voices not in the head Out in the air they called ahead Through ripped out speakers Through thick and thin They found a shelter Under my skin -Evgeny Aleksandrovitch Nikolaev
Besides the life threatening free climbing i did a couple of weeks ago, i've steered clear from anything that might fuck me up before the roo. Hope everything works out for ya
