Any of you photo buffs have actual knowledge of what cameras will and won't be allowed in Centeroo? I am not a professional, but I just got a new DSLR that I am dying to take in with me. It's got a kit lens, so nothing fancy. I don't want to get it there and have to leave it at camp all day b/c they won't let me in with it.
Please no theft warnings - I appreciate the concerns, but the opportunity to take the shots I've missed over the last six Roos outweighs the risk.

I think, in previous discussions, it was said that cameras with removable lenses are considered professional.

Ok well heres my opinion. Ive been to Roo 3x, Coachella once, and other misc festivals. There are way too many things to miss at a festival like Roo. I brought my DSLR last year and got sweet photos. Yes its true that they do not allow pro. cameras (ones with removeable lenses) into centroo, but I got mine in just fine lsat year. just slung it behind my back as i went through the gates. If they catch you, there is no way they are taking it from you. Thats an expensive piece of equip. They will just send you back to put it up, but you can just pick a new line with someone not checking stuff as anal retentively.
Now that ive said that, I also have to say that I noticed that it is actually much easier to get good pictures at roo with a smaller digi. They are a much lighter to hold while getting pictures. Those DSLR get heavy being held above peoples heads the entire show (thats pretty much how I spend every show.) But then again it is a DSLR. what fantastic pictures is brings to you. So its just your choice. hope I helped.

^definitely helped and I am considering making an attempt anyway. I am more interested in non-show shots and I guess I will work on my arm strength for the odd show shot I decide to take. ;-)

yeah, pictures araound bonnaroo is perfect for the dslr. If you do make it in to centroo with it, my advice is this. Get over feeling like ajerk by getting up front for shows. I think of it like this, yeah people may be upset by you walking up behind them and getting closer (the whole "excuse me, excuse me.." line) but they wont stay mad at you cause you arent standing in front of them, you're just moving ahead. Now when it comes to the people you do end up in front of or next to, just tell them that you wont be there long, and you just want a couple of good close pictures and you'll be out of their way soon. Then once youve gotten some pics, say thanks and move along (either to another close spot, using the same tactics, or just to another band.) Also a good tactic I suggest using is the bribe. When you are up as close as you can get/want, tell the people next/behid you that you will share water or any Corn that you may have with you. I have found that the sharing of corn works very well, since the number of corn enjoyers is high at Roo.
I wondered this my first year. In 2006 I brought my Rebel XT with just a 50mm prime. I snuck it in Thursday through Saturday, no problem. Sunday, however, the guy pulled it out of my bag. He just put it right back in. You'll be fine.
I'd guess you will probably be okay so long as you aren't bringing huge lenses with you. I'm debating bringing my D80, but I'll definitely be bringing a smaller camera as well.

Yeah a 50 prime would be perfect for roo. Its not a retractable/zoom lens so they will totally allow it! plus its a 50 prime! made for low light and you dont have to get so close! thanks for the reminder! karma for you friend!
Plus the nifty fifty 1.8 is so cheap that even if something happens to it, it's not a big deal in the least.
Which is why I wasn't too upset when my Rebel XT was stolen... (not at Bonnaroo). I had JUST bought a 50 1.4 and had yet to put it on. *wipes sweat from brow*

Good luck, hope to see you the summer.
I'd let you stand in front of me if you shared your corn with me. let it be known throughout the land, thou willist share thou corn with the cuttith. All hail the corn cat!
Just realize that if they want...they can confiscate the camera..anything D40 (Nikon) and above...I have D80 and will not risk it.....just because some don't doesn't mean they won't.... depends on who's working the gate that day... Hello...if they take glowsticks they take cameras....they'll give them back eventually...if they can FIND them...I don't take chances on $1200 cameras personally..... Yes....you can sneak them in...but....I wouldn't risk it......most pros wouldnt risk it....but hey...it's your choice.....
They are not going to take your camera. It is not a problem. Don't be a drama llama. I've stood in the front row of multiple performances shooting with my Rebel right in front of 'Roo security and nobody ever said a thing.

I went through this last year and asked a guy from securyt directly. He told me that they consider a camera with a removeable lense larger then like 4 inches a professional camera. He said that they usually measure it by the length of like a guys wallet.

oh really? cause I had always thought it had been any type of removable lens....hmmmmmm well then......again not like it was gonna matter, mine's getting in anyway
i've already bought a new camera for roo...a nice little plastic box, ie an old school holga. not really great for far off stages or whatever, but it's better than taking my slr and possibly having it get nasty and dusty..plus i needed a reason to buy a new one...

I took my Nikon D50 all over the place last year and was never questioned or hassled (smaller lenses). However, this year I'm bringing a point and shoot because my nice D50 got completely covered in dust. It doesn't seem to have affected it long term, but dust in a lens or camera body is bad news.

Wrap it in a plastic bag and all you have to worry about is the lens. That's what I do when shooting around water, high humidity or any other conditions that might damage the camera. There's still some risk, but it's lower.
The problem is in the lens itself. Unless you're planning to seal the lens at each of its joints, you're going potentially suck dust and other particulates into the system. Add a dust-attracting sensor (it's slightly ionized, so dust is literally drawn to it) and you've got a recipe for disaster.
Leave the DSLR rig at home and bring a small point & shoot.

Say what you will. This certainly isn't my first experience shooting with an SLR in "extreme" conditions and I've never had a disaster. I have had to have them cleaned, but if I can't take my camera into these situations there isn't much point to having it.
I am planning on shooting outside of Centeroo with my Nikon F2. And a Fuji finepix 5100 for inside Centeroo. I love the F2 and would take it anywhere. The fuji takes really good picks for a PS This is one I took a couple of years ago with the Fuji ... tinyurl.com/2e8heg
I plan on taking mine in. I would kinda like to do some "live" blogging of the festival for my music blog and practicing photography at the same time wouldn't be bad.
I'm only going to have my 50mm, wouldn't even think of bringing in my telephoto.
