absinthe is the nastiest tasting alcohol... yuk. one sip and i was choking... i guess it could just be that im a light weight but still just ew.
but if you are going to do it and do the whole sugar cube thing.. its good to put a sugar cube in the side of your mouth and just hold it in your cheek when drinking it... it kinda helps the taste.

I'm glad I'm not the only one...
We had some here for a while, and it ended up being a running joke to get someone to take a shot of it and watch them turn beet red while they made the nasty face.
But my best friend loves the stuff. Whaddaya know?
Saw this thread and had to stop lurking & contribute for once.
"Three Sheets" is a favorite tv show of mine. In this particular episode, the host ventures to the Czech Republic and tries absinth for the first time. Check it out. Funny stuff.

whats aftershock? Absinthe is a bad substance... you'll wake up feeling like total crap the next day. It poison's your body and makes you do terrible things. Take my word for it!
i actually like absinthe. i just became legal here - "lucid" was what i was drinking in New Orleans and I picked up a bottle. you do have to mix it with ice cold water and you should put in a sugar cube to lighten up the taste - but you dont have to light anything on fire. that, from what i read, was popularized in the movie "moulin rouge".
oh, aftershock is some kind of schnapps - not sure if its cinnamon or minty - but you get the idea. its so sugary, that there are sugar crystals on the bottom of the bottle.

after shock has 3 flavors.. red is cinnamon, blue and green are minty. i haven't tried the minty flavors though. the walls of sugar in the bottle are good to eat, too. you can get drunk off eating the sugar alone since it's been saturating in the alcohol.

Absinthe like Lucid and Absente are now available in the states, but they must still conform to FDA acceptable thujone levels, which are about 9 parts per million, much lower than european absinthe. Of course european absinthe still has less thujone than absinthe made before European prohibition.

I wish i could drink yummy sugary beverages. Sugar and alcohol do not mix well in my belly, the mixture gives me really bad headaches. I'll be sticking to sugar free red bull and vodka or vodka soda's!

I've made my own absinthe before (it's too late to start making your own and have it prepared in time for bonnaroo) and it is VERY bitter and thujone definitely has psychoactive properties, despite what Wiki might say. I haven't had the urge to make it again. It's too hard to choke down for what you get out of it.
Ive tried Absinthe and when done CORRECTLY, it tastes wonderful (although I'm a fan of licorice).
Its definitely not something you drink straight. You don't do shots of it, if thats what anyone is thinking. You DO need cold water and a sugar cube. Its not just for show. I don't recall ever lighting anything on fire though.
But yeah...as said before, its probably not something you want to bring to the roo, unless you save it for night time.
Oh and, if you're going to get Absinthe, stay away from the fake American stuff. Get a good Czech or Swiss Absinthe.
"Real" absinthe was outlawed here in the states years ago. Back in the 1600-1700's it was made with an opiate. Van Gough and Poe loved the stuff. The Americanized stuff is just a basic liquor. My personal opinion is it tastes like shite. Might as well pack you some Ouzo or Sambuca into camp.
Yes, the kit comes with 1 bag of Wormwood and 1 bag of other flavorings and whatever turns it green. Also came with a Absinthe glass, slotted spoon and sugar.

Sorry, you've been misinformed. Thujone can have opiate-like effects such as confusion and vertigo, but doesn't have nearly the same kind of euphoria or pain blocking effect. You could be thinking of Jagrmeister, which is still made with codeine in Germany.
I have four or five bottles of the stuff that I either purchased myself, or had some English relatives bring to me here while visiting. Originally, it was just the novelty of having this "illegal", Scope-looking liquor bottle in my bar. But eventually, I had enough bottles, and my curiousity was so strong, that one New Years, maybe 2 yrs ago, I said "F" it, I'm gonna try it. I did the whole sugar cube gig, etc, etc, and I can tell you 2 certain things.
1) It is easily THE worst tasting liquor I've ever had. Tasted very medicine-ee, very boozey. Made me whince...trust me you won't enjoy it. But I'm sure, like me, you'll sacrifice your tastebuds to try and basically trip on liquor. Hence, numero two...
2) I didn't trip. I drank a whole bottle, about the size of a bottle of ice wine, and got nothing but the standard buzz, nothing heavy, no trails, no audio special effects. I didn't get weiner. The only thing I got was queasy.
Save it for your wacky booze shelf on your bar, w/the grappa, pocheen, and whatever other crazy stuff you aquire, but trust me, at Bonnaroo, you'd be better served drinking antifreeze, than that rancid piss.....sorry to be a buzzkill...
Only one company makes absinth by the original recipe anymore so it is very likely you english family members didnt get you the authentic stuff, hence your bad or lack of experience
Stuff is foul. I thought I read somewhere it was made legal in the us recentely(with wormwood) still don't want any, a european friend brought some back years ago, didn't drink enough to catch a buzz, due to it's foulness.
There are a million other ways to get whacked w/o having to drink that nasty garbage. If you wanna try it for the novelty, then F it. Otherwise, leave that trash on the shelf, and go lick a friggin' toad. Probably tastes better (or the same, if you lick it's bunghole)....

I love sipping absinthe over a good conversation... creates a very lucid, freeflowing atmosphere.... But treat it with respect! If you drink it like you would any other alcohol, you'll pay.
by the way... I LIKE the taste of absinthe. am I weird?

no, I absolutely loved it.
If you like the taste of anise and strong alcohol you pretty much like the taste of absinthe.

The california company that makes hangar one vodka has been the first us company to release the real thing since the prohibition was lifted this year, I hear it's pretty good, but in reality all it is pretty much is very strong liquor, which of course will eff u up. Extreme caution should be used with liquor at roo.
