a friend of mine tried this drink last night and thought it would be a nice thing to share with neighbors at roo. he said they used a sugar cube....and lit it?
1. do you know if this comes in a plastic container 2. do you know how to prepare it with the sugar cube 3. is it likely to make someone sick? he said no but it sounds a little odd to me? i dont want to give anyone something too sugary.
I've never seen it in a plastic container. The flavor is anise (licorice). Personally, not something I'd like to drink in the heat of Tennessee!
Traditionally, absinthe is drunk in a special glass and a slotted spoon is used to hold a cube of sugar. Water is poured over the sugar cube to dissolve it in the glass.
Like any liquor, it will make someone sick if they drink too much of it, but none of the claims of absinthe having psychoactive properties have ever been substantiated.

thanks so much! ROOOOOOO
I have yet to try any absinthe but I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that: 1. like most other liquids, it would be possible to transfer it to a non-glass container. 2. If no slotted spoon is available, it might be possible to find some other method, such as stirring, to dissolve a sugar cube in it. 3. I have heard of people mixing liquor with such things as coke, which I'm pretty sure contains more than the equivalent of one cube of sugar, and living to tell the tale.
thanks everyone yeah i dont want anything that will make anyone really ill the problem with transferring it to another container is that in tn that constitutes open container.....if they wanted to give us a hard time...my understanding is that they could and i would like to avoid that.
as for the sugar...he said they lit it on fire somehow..but sounds like that may have been for show. perhaps we need to experiment some with other methods.

OK, as far as open container goes, leave it in the original sealed bottle until you pull off the highway onto Bonnaroo property, then do the transfer, dump the bottle at the gate. (or just put the open container in the trunk of your car or back of your truck, which should be legal in most states (check state laws for all states you'll be passing through)). Flaming drinks are just for show and actually burn off much of the alcohol in a drink (thus decreasing the desired effect). You can get the same effect by consuming nono and setting your drink in the sun for a few minutes. Also, people who get really ill from consuming one sugar cube probably should not be drinking anyway.
thanks . thats great information. that would work out well.
i also was concerned that transferring it might harm the taste. i dont like wine beer or soda transferred - gross. sounds like it might work fine in this case
as for the sugar content - i just wasnt sure how sweet the actual drink was. i dont want to hand out something as sweet as port - haahahaha - that would just be WRONG. you know how it is when people are drinking who are not used to it. just dont want to add to anyones problem.
we can skip the sugar cube theatrics if its just for show!
its liquor so i doubt that the taste would be effected... especially if you put it in a hard plastic container (not a normal water bottle) -- more like a nalgene or something

you can buy plastic flasks from just about any liquor store for like three bux a piece...adding absinthe to any soda, imo, would be just wrong, i guess redbull could work...in the past i liked my absinthe with the water and sugar cube

I didn't mean to suggest that coke would be an appropriate mixer for absinthe, but only that the amount of sugar in a cube was not sufficient to be considered a significant health hazard.
I have four or five bottles of the stuff that I either purchased myself, or had some English relatives bring to me here while visiting. Originally, it was just the novelty of having this "illegal", Scope-looking liquor bottle in my bar. But eventually, I had enough bottles, and my curiousity was so strong, that one New Years, maybe 2 yrs ago, I said "F" it, I'm gonna try it. I did the whole sugar cube gig, etc, etc, and I can tell you 2 certain things.
1) It is easily THE worst tasting liquor I've ever had. Tasted very medicine-ee, very boozey. Made me whince...trust me you won't enjoy it. But I'm sure, like me, you'll sacrifice your tastebuds to try and basically trip on liquor. Hence, numero two...
2) I didn't trip. I drank a whole bottle, about the size of a bottle of ice wine, and got nothing but the standard buzz, nothing heavy, no trails, no audio special effects. I didn't get dick. The only thing I got was queasy.
Save it for your wacky booze shelf on your bar, w/the grappa, pocheen, and whatever other crazy stuff you aquire, but trust me, at Bonnaroo, you'd be better served drinking antifreeze, than that rancid piss.....sorry to be a buzzkill...

I've tried it and it does taste like total shite. We took shots of it and on the 3rd one I nearly puked. I did get the whole "fish eye" kinda thing goin on. Everything was blurry. It's kinda like if you drank a little too much robotussin for your cough.

I've never tried absinthe. Probably because I heard some pretty brutal horror stories a few years back, along the lines of painful uncontrolable urinating of a white milky substance!. But hey dont knock it unless u try it right?

it might be important to note that absinthe traditionally has a very high alcohol content compared to other types of liquor (dont know about the american brands they just started selling though)
at roo i would definitely wait till after the sun has gone down to bust out the absinthe if i was to drink it at all
On the other hand I do like having a little flask of B&B around for latenight shenanigans. It is sweet but not nearly as much as the absinth, and it actually tastes good on its own.

i'm considering bringing some Aftershock, I love it on it's own. I may invest in that binocular flask i saw posted on here.
