This is the most pro radiohead Bonnaroo discussion i know of by a long shot hehe... Im not a huge fan of theirs but i'll probably go see them or at least part of the set, should be interesting. I dont think they're bad for Bonnaroo at all, i think they're a step up from Dave...
I dont think there is such a thing as best band in the world but if there was it would't be radiohead.

Seems like you are trying to stir things up. So I'll bite. Radiohead is the best band in the whole wide world. IMO. Who would you consider the best band in the world?

I love Radiohead, they are the main reason I'm going to Bonnaroo, but it's a little silly to thinK somebody is trying to stir the pot when they just say Radiohead isn't be best band IN THE WORLD.

Yeah im not trying to start anything i said they were good for Bonnaroo, chances are i'll enjoy the set. I could think of a few bands to replace Tom Petty though
Frankly i wasnt going to go to the Roo' till the additions... now im trying to swing waka and the roo, wish me luck...
I think it's fantastic Bonnaroo was able to go outside of the box and book something so unique to stay fresh, yet still on course. I've never seen Radiohead live, though I do own most of their albums.
Leaving Bonnaroo last year, our group talked about the need for them to shake it up. We tossed around our big dreams. Pink Floyd, Cream and Radiohead were among them (some of them larger dreams than others obviously.) Bonnaroo can't have their rotating list of headliners be Dave, Trey, The Dead and Panic depending on whether it's an odd or even year. They have to stay innovative and fresh. They can have repeated headliners, but they should avoid getting stuck in a rut. To me, that's what this lineup screams. The intial announcement diversified the lineup to a large degree. The first and second round additions made the clear statement that Bonnaroo is still about jam. They merge the old faves w/ new genres, and new bands, and by doing so they stay fresh and cutting edge. How many great bands has Bonnaroo been a catalyst for?
I think it's amazing that this festival has been able to piece together such diverse lineups, and unite them all under one musical umbrella.
I really want to hear Drumroll for the top five: Myxamatosis morning bell (kid A Version) Pyramid song The Tourist (perfect for the roo) packt like sardines in a crusht tin box
This thread has sort of become the default "Radiohead" thread.
Anyway, Thom posted on Dead Air Space and apparently they're working on "Nude (aka Don't Get Any Big Idead)" right now. For those that aren't familiar, it's one of those Radiohead tracks that has been floating around for about ten years and has gained "mythic" status. The few times they've played it live have yielded some gorgeous results. He mentions Jonny is working with a string section for the track. Oh gawd, this could be awesome.

It's been fun reading this thread. I'll say right off the bat that Radiohead is my favorite band and a major reason why I'll be travelling 2000 miles to Tennesee this June. I've been to the past several Coachellas and loved them, and my Phish-loving roommates have always talked about how great the vibe at Bonnaroo is, so I'm really stoked... Vegoose convinced me that these Superfly guys know how to do a festival...
Back to the topic of this thread, I gotta say that I'm a true music lover, and I'm all over the place as far as genres go. I've been to lots and lots of concerts (150+) and festivals over the years, seen most of the legends (u2, stones, etc) and countless memorable shows in tiny clubs... BUT... for me... when it comes to naming my favorite band, it's really no contest. there is Radiohead, and then there is everyone else. It's not even close. I loved the Bends and then became obsessed with OK Computer, but it was seeing them live that really did it to me. I've seen them around 10 times I think, and almost every time I leave with my mind blown. I'm 34 but when I'm down in the pit at a radiohead show I feel like a kid on christmas morning.
I've seen the aforementioned big ideas/nude song performed live before and it's beautiful. Seen Creep several times, and Fake Plastic Trees is always special to see... but a song I've never seen them play and would be thrilled to hear is "Let Down" which I don't think they've played live in years for whatever reason... it's one of my favorites. But mostly I'm anxious to hear the new sh*t they've been working out. I'm guessing Bonnaroo will precede the album release so maybe we'll get to hear some fresh tracks live which will be a treat...
Glad to see some other hardcore fans here. See you in June!

I think they don't play Let Down because its really difficult to pull off live...the 3 different guitar parts and all - at least that is what i hear.

I've read that they are going to be testing out new songs for the upcoming album while on tour this year. They have described this as being similar to the way they introduced Kid A's stuff. I am SO stoked I could explode.

I totally agree with that....we will be getting some new songs for sure! The thought of them playing over two hours teases me, but I'm trying not to have high expectations...it just seems like they wouldn't play extra long sets on a warmup tour....or maybe they have something special planned for the Roo!!

Yeah I'm with you, Id be happy to get 2 hours out of them, but I don't think they've played much longer than that even when they could have, so i doubt they'd try it now. Their set at Coachella was right at about 2 hours I think, and they could have played longer since there was no one behind them on the main stage that night... but then again Thom was coming off a bad throat that night... so who knows
If they play for 3 hours, it will be a legendary night and we'll be there damn it
Anyone have a favorite video of theirs? Street Spirit's gotta be my favorite, Just is a close second, then there's paranoid android....well I like all of them actually, but Street Spirit is the best.
Lying Mouth is definitely weird stuff. Some of it is just hilarious. Like, what was it......freak juice? I couldn't stop laughing. And Ed's noises. May gawd that was hilarious.
But I really liked the video that was done to Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors and Like Spinning Plates. Crazy but good.
Oh yea, and Street Spirit is my favorite 'real' video.
My favorite part of Gigantic Lying Mouth is the studio look-in stuff, specifically when Thom is playing Good morning my lord or Good morning Mr. Magpie. That song is just great and has this zeppelinesque feel to it. I hope that they put that on the new album. That song has lots of potential.

I know, that part of Lying Mouth where the skin-colored claymation figures shoot each other up with heroin? That's got to be one of the more disturbing things I've ever seen. That DVD is incredible -- a must-have for dedicated radiohead fans.
I like Street Spirit too, but my appreciation hasn't grown since I first saw it. Most of it looks like a film student's senior project or something -- like they're doing cool camera tricks, but not to compliment the song so much, just for the sake of doing the tricks. Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just don't think it's a very mature offering.
My favorite video by them is Pyramid Song: sweet, trippy animations, makes a point, and reflects the sounds of the song in visual form.
Why does everyone think that they will only play 2 hours. I am expecting a 2.5 to 3 hour legendary set. I always have high expectations for their shows but have never been disappointed. I am going to expect to see 2.5 to 3 hours, with about 30 songs (6-8 of them being new). Is this too much to expect?
The two times I've seen them, in 2001 and 2003, they played 24 and 23 songs, respectively. That show in 2001 had to have been close to 2.5 hours, but I might be wrong (no pun). Who knows, maybe they have something special in store for Bonnaroo, but I'll be happy with just about anything.

You were at the show across from Grant Park (forget the name of the park) in Chicago in '01 right? I missed it unfortunately, but according to everyone I've ever spoken too, it was just legendary. I know several people who still call it their best ever concert. It was a one shot deal, if I remember, not part of a larger tour and in a very unique venue situation for the City of Chicago. I think they were avoiding Ticketmaster at the time (god bless em) and the show was a huge logistical challenge to pull off. If Radiohead has "extra special" shows in their repetoire, then I think that show would definitely be one, so I don't think its too reasonable to expect more than what went down there in terms of length of set etc. Between shows like that, Coachella, and stuff they've done in Europe, they have played a lot of shows that were "extra special" in terms of the setting, location and crowd. Them playing Bonnaroo is a dream come true for me, and I'm sure they're excited about it too, but it will be one of many massive, unique, "special" events that they've played.
And in what universe is a "typical" Radiohead show in any way unsatisfactory or insufficient? Expectations can be a b!tch. Best to get excited about seeing Radiohead(!) and let anything beyond that expectaion be gravy.

Yup, yup, Hutchinson Field is the name you're looking for. It was definitely part of a tour, but an abbreviated tour that only touched 7 or 8 cities in the US. The skyline, an eerie fog that was probably caused by the heat, and a full moon backdropped the stage, so whenever the light show mellowed out it was sort of surreal. They played "Lurgee," which was rare at that point, and graced us with three encores, including a two song third encore, which didn't seem to happen at any other dates. I believe it was Ed O'Brien who was quoted months later saying that it was his favorite show on the tour.
I'm among those who consider it the greatest show they've ever seen.
A lot of gushing about the '01 Hutchinson Field show in the reviews including this quote from Yorke:
Thom's answer: "The first time was a great experience, and we were tempted to repeat it, because it had quite an effect on us, playing underneath that skyline. But there's nothing worse than just repeating something that you're really fond of. It was one of the highlights of that year for us, but we wanted to do something different this time. It wasn't a case of someone in Chicago telling us we couldn't do it."
Yeah, that was the one other time I've seen them. Comparisons aside, that show was an incredible experience also! We were in the pavillion, but way back in front of the soundboard. Needless to say, we were in the ideal spot for sound and I probably shouldn't complain about the view either. I remember running down the hill with a ridiculously overpriced beer in a guitar shaped container when I heard Thom's voice ring out -- "Arreeeee you suuuccchhh a dreeeaammmerrrrr..."
Great moment for me! I remember "The Gloaming" took on a whole new life in the live setting. Just mesmorizing!
