There is no possible way that they would ever come out of hiatus, at bonnaroo, unannounced.
The business end of Bonnaroo would never let that kind of advertisment slip through their fingers. Like someone said before that would attract so many people ontop of the regular crowd.
But yeah, I hear that they are going to come off hiatus EVERY year.
i concur. i love phish and i dont think the roo is the place for them to reunite. although it would be sportatic and secretive yes but if announced no. its true how awesome the phests are and how everyone goes simply for one band.
^^^ i agree... i think it's ignorant to say that phish could make an unnanounced visit to bonnaroo... what benefit would that serve them/superfly... phish has already made their mark on music and the jam band scene in general... to go back and do bonnaroo would probably contradict the whole reason why they broke up... phish has declined bonnaroo in the past, why would they have the urge to play there for a reunion?
Phish could very well play Roo, and there is no freakin way it will happen this year. Unannounced would be nice, but would never happen for business reasons.
The most reasonable scenario would be the initial announcement for a reunion tour. Then they would headline Roo, 2 nights most likely, prolly near the beginning/end of the tour. My guess is this'll go down in 09.

Never say never. One thing many don't take into consideration is the difference in live music structure today versus the late 90's and early 00's. We cannot compare The Great Went, Lemonwheel, The Clifford Ball or Big Cypress to Bonnaroo. The Phish festivals were the only huge camping festivals of their kind at that time so they were rhe only show in town. The overlap of Bonnaroo with IT festival and Coventry are the two we can reasonably argue over.
Now Coventry should be excluded because it was hyped and known as the last hurrah for Phish so you had to expect the mass pilgrimage that one caused. So the IT festival is the only fair difect comparison and it means comparing the 5th(?) huge Phish festival to a brand new 2nd year multi band fest. Roo was still in its learning phase. It has now hit its stride.
Now in the middle of this decade we have multilple first class festivals that are designed to attract the same audience as the Phish festivals did: 10K Lakes, Wakarusa, All Good, Summercamp, moedown, Camp Bisco, Langerado, etc. Saturation absolutely will have a drain effect making it difficult to asses how Bonnaroo would be with Phish as a headliner.
Absolutely, it would be the fastest roo to sell out, and it would have the look and feel of the first two Bonnaroos as far as audience goes. But the texture of the jamband scene has continued to shift and change. Many third gen jambands have picked up hardcore fans in Phish's absense. Two nights of Phish would also deter THOUSANDS of people who have been going to roo in 05, 06, and 07. Many new rooers are there for bands other than jam bands. They would be the first cry and not not show up if Phish had a double bill like WSP in 05.
But most of all, we have all gotten older. The droves of people who flocked all over the country to see Phish are mostly in their late 20's and well into their 30's now. The logistics of the aging Phish audience makes it harder for 100,000 people to drop everything and go to a Phish fest.
Again, if it was a one time show only, it couldn't happen without a massive increase in ticket sales. But if Phish reunite and start touring again then their presence at roo as one one stop on a summer tour would be nearly the same as The Dead in 2004. A huge draw for an aging fan population but not like the Phish fests in the past.
The times they have a changed. And we can never go back to Big Cypress. A reunion will now be the 4th or 5th chapter in the ongoing Phish universe. It will look and feel very different. I am excited to see it happen but none of us can say what it will end up being like.

my heart wants to argue with you, but my mind knows you are right. dealing with nostalgia is a bitch sometimes ain't it? almost as bad as getting older and realizing it as its happening
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

of course phish isnt going to play bonnaroo. dont get me wrong....i would be the happiest person in the crowd....but it wont happen. just listened to that trey 92nd st y interview and when asked if phish would ever play together again, he said that Mike wants a year off from touring period and Page has his album hitting in April and is going to tour for that and is really excited for it (and it took him a little longer to find himself) but said that if he were to find himself onstage with those 4 guys again he would be the happiest person there. i know someone already said it, but i agree that it is safest to look towards 2008-2009 for a tour.
wait. you're telling me that because the crowd is older that people wouldnt go to a phestival? i dont buy that cause it would be like a vacation. it is a vacation. i dont know what i was saying there. anyhow just because the crowd has gotten older doesnt mean people wont see them. maybe not hardcore tour around. maybe so. who knows? i definately think a phestival would draw massive numbers as it is an opportunity to basically see three shows ( 3 sets 2days=6 sets/2=3 shows) by going to the phest. also dont forget how there are kids who have never gotten to see them play.
Yeah, like me I don't know about following them, of course I'd love to, but I'd probably have to settle for a run or two of shows. I'd definitely go to a "Phestival" too and if they played Bonnaroo it would be pretty sweet.

I am saying there are thousands who want to go but now have kids, jobs that aren't as flexible, and many now choose their vacation around raising children (disney, beaches, other family type vacations). That's all I'm saying. The fans have grown up and have new challenges in their lives that make phestivals not a number one priority anymore.

Trey said in his interview that mike wanted to take a year off from touring. So it seems like hes not doing anything, i havnt heard of him releasing anything in 07'.
Superfly seems to have been pretty supportive of any and all Phish spawned side projects and vice versa. I don't think for a second they'd do a one off gig at Bonnaroo, but why wouldn't they headline the festival?
Because they can do their own festival of 80,000 people.
They could do their own festival AND Bonnaroo and both would sell out...easily. Bonnaroo's appeal is much wider than just fans of Phish. Plugging Phish into that Sunday headlining spot doesn't necessarily eliminate the possiblility that Radiohead returns for a headlining gig on Saturday or that Springsteen or Young don't take the stage on Friday. Both those acts have just as hardcore fanbases and draws as Phish.

I would have to disagree, i think a phish reunion would overun bonnaroo, and leisurly fans could be overwhelmed and alienated by it. I think phish could eventually headline bonnaroo, but not on their first tour, theyd need time for the frenzy to die down.
i dont think thats realistic. id say there is almost zero chance that trey will be in jail in june. things like this have a way of disappearing with rehab and fines for the rich and famous.
