supposedly their most recent tour's cinematic aspect (according to BMB- writer for their website) is the best it has ever been. it will be interesting to see how it will turn out being outdoors and whatnot. lighting is amazing in the arena setting. im interested to see what they do. they always do something interesting...to say the least.
This tour they focused on lighting heavily. The stage was VERY different from what it had been in the past. Very cool, very different. I loved the stage setup on the Lateralus tour. The videos were some of Adams finest work. This year was really cool also, just very different. I recall a green laser field going all over the place that was rather sweet. And the way they lit everything and the scenes that played on the strip video screen along the back for Jambi was intense. With Tool you can always count on a stellar visual experience to go with the surreal musical performance.

im amazed at how great of an artist adam is. not only his obvious musical ability but he is such a great visual artist as well. great sculptures for freddie kruger and jarassic park stuff. not to mention being the art director for all of tools albums, videos, and stage show. so phenominally talented.
I've never really listened to that much Tool...I'm wondering if I should start now or just wait for Bonnaroo and get blown away there
i would start now. tool takes a while to digest. i still hear new things in albums i have owned for years. i would get aenima first then lateralus then go back to the older stuff like undertow and opiate and salival (if you can find it) before heading into 10,000 days. aenima is considered by many fans as their favorite. it was a change in direction for the band and led into a new style and sound that they are known for. every song on the album is great and all of them are benchmark tool. stinkfist (they open many a show with this tune), eulogy, h., 46 & 2, aenima, pushit, third eye are all fan favs (not to mention other greats like hooker with a peni.s and jimmy). it will also introduce you into their unique album structure. they really take you on a ride and have cool fill tracks to set the tone for the oncoming song. all of those showed up in this thread at least once and thats just one album! do yourself a favor and begin your journey into tool! i listened to almost nothing else for a solid year after i first got into them. they are addicting once you find out the message/philosophy of their music. not to mention figuring out the complex audible beauty. their arrangement is masterful. i could go on about them forever ;D

Do they play Sober live? I know it's the one recognizable song of theirs, but I do enjoy it, and would like to see it played live. I'm just getting into the other stuff now.
that would be a cool setlist at roo if they added lostkeys/rosetta stoned and wings part 1 and two. that would put the show at nearly 2 1/2 hours i think

What you mentioned is the exact set they played on the US tour last fall. Coming in at just around 90 minutes.

Throughout the years, I think Sober has been played at every show of theirs that I have seen.

Either way you will become a fan, im sure of it! I personally got into them through "Undertow" and then went to Opiate-Aenima-Lateralus- 10,000 days. Which is in order of release outside of the first 2. Every album is unique from the one before and after it, however each album lends itself to the next.
Opiate is the most raw, and quite powerful. From there they came out with Undertow which is also a very aggressive album, but more complete and clean. They then progressed to Aenima which is as perfect an album as a band can release. Its a noticeable step from Undertow, but there is also alot that gets carried over. Lateralus really starts their journey onto another feeling, a beautiful mix of energy and beauty. Some epic tracks that both hold true to the early days, but also convey the message of where the band was at musically at the time. 10,000 days is just another step in the bands progression. Alot of people felt let down with this album, but it is easily one of my favorites (its right up there with all the others! haha) 10,000 days is truly epic, the wings/10,000 days journey is an emotional roller coaster that leaves you in awe when it is all said and done. There are other tracks that are much the same on the album, but you also have tracks like Jambi and Rosetta Stoned that just knock you on your ass. If you listen to the band in this order you are lucky enough to feel yourself moving with them, transcending from one form of greatness to another.
That said, I dont think anybody getting into a band for the first time is really going to sit there and be delighted by the 16 year progression of the band, so just listen to Aenima, and go from there!

i have heard pushit live, it was amazing. flood i have never heard live and it's #2 on my list of tool songs i'd like to hear at a show that i haven't yet. third eye is 1.
Stinkfist Schism Vicarious Prison Sex H. Part of Me Pushit The Grudge Intolerence The Pot Parabol/Parabola ---------------- Rosetta Stoned Sober Forty-Six and 2 Lateralus Hush Eulogy Swamp Song Right In Two Hooker With a Penis Opiate Ticks & Leeches Ænima Wings For Marie/10,000 Days
That said, from setlists that Ive seen and things that Ive heard, they very arely if ever play anything from Opiate. When I saw them on their Lateralus tour, they only played one song from Undertow (Sober).
Also, I believe that they've only played Ticks & Leeches once. I'm praying that they whip it out again for Bonnaroo. Very Very unlikely though.

There is a video on youtube of Maynard post Ticks and Leeches. Not pretty. That song is so vocally demanding that he cant follow it up with anything. In the video his voice cracks and he ends up slamming the mic down and walking off stage.
Goes to show how passionate he is, he was seriously pissed.
They took a little break, he drank some water and they finished the show, but I think its safe to say that it was the last time he will do it live.
