U.S. Homeland Security Bars Famed Mexican Acoustic Group, Forcing Group to Cancel Sold Out U.S. Tour Dates: Government Says Rodrigo Sanchez Has Name Similar to Barred Foreigner
MEXICO CITY—A renowned Mexican guitarist, member of the ATO Recording artists Rodrigo Y Gabriela, has been hold up here for over two weeks since the United States Embassy declined to renew his P-1 Entertainer Visa. This unexpected situation has led to the cancellation of half a dozen U.S. shows on Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s current tour, and put in jeopardy many other major concerts and promotional appearances.
The group, already stars in Europe and experiencing a surge here in the U.S., were heralded in the current issue of Rolling Stone as a “New Artist to Watch,” and hailed in a recent Wall Street Journal feature as possibly “the next Buena Vista Social Club”. Despite this, the duo has been unable to gain entrance into the U.S, forcing the cancellation of sold out concerts and a marquee slot at the world’s largest music industry conference, South By Southwest, in Austin, TX.
The State Department has said the process to review the visa might take upwards of three months. The U.S embassy in Mexico City cannot approve Rodrigo’s P-1 Entertainer Visa until it receives confirmation that he is not an individual with a similar name who is barred from receiving a visa, this despite the fact that Rodrigo has entered and exited the U.S. without any problem in the last nine months.
“I feel frustrated because we wanted to play to our fans in the states, we have had a great response from them and from the media too.” says Rodrigo. “I feel bad for our American label, ATO Records, they have been doing a great job and this has forced them to relocate their energies towards something that has nothing to do with the music industry. I have met some others musicians from different parts of the world that have, unfortunately, been through the same situation when they were about to start their tour in the States. This is nothing to do with being Latin or Arab or from wherever. This is a policy that some have chosen to support, these are internal security measure issues that have to be resolved by Americans themselves. We hope to be back into the States as soon as I'm cleared to do so and keep contributing to society by sharing music and our time with people and reinforcing the importance that art and culture have, have had and will have to all of us while we are alive.”
This news comes at an unfortunate and critical time for the band, as the duo is gaining major momentum and attention behind their debut American release. “The excitement and energy associated with Rod and Gab since the release of this record has been phenomenal,” said Chris Tetzeli, ATO Records’ Founding Partner. “These two acoustic guitar players that used to busk on the streets of Dublin a few years ago have been making quite an impact in our country with their genre breaking music. Now, just as we were about to launch into their first major US touring cycle accompanied by the release of their first video and a new single on radio, we have to slam on all the brakes. It is unfortunate to see this setback happen to a great record and a brilliant live act. We really felt this was getting ready to take off and we hope the situation can be resolved quickly."
Since its U.S. release on October 3, 2006, “Rodrigo y Gabriela” has shipped over 100,000 records. The band's debut US release was heralded by Billboard Magazine as "One of the best guitar albums in ages; one of the best discs of the year". Their music has received national radio airplay, critical acclaim, and national press attention. The group has performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman.

don't even start on how lame and pathetic our gov't is. i could write a book or two i think on all my opinions on all the morons running this country. sometimes i feel ashamed and embarrassed to be an american. but i'd rather be an american than from another country. here's my 2nd biggest problem with our country(aside from what the truth may actually be about 9/11 and the civil war in iraq) - i don't understand how i can go into a pawn shop or anywhere else that sells guns, with no information or a background check on who i am, and i can buy as many guns as i'd like, do whatever i want with them, but i can't buy fuc*ing we*d, even the medical stuff, you can still get arrested for. it makes no sense to me. anybody else feel this way? its actually keeping me alive cause it helps with depression, but nobody wants to believe that, even though i know firsthand it helps.

this is the best part of the article. so because his name is similar to some other poor schlep who can't get a visa, now R's is denied? and then on top of it all, the GD state dept. isn't going to review the visa for 3 months?
i feel bad for all the Sadam Husien's and Tim Jong Il's who are being denied visa's left and right for name similarity issues!

for the conspriracy theorists: As much as I despise the current administration and everything it stands for; I just can't believe that they would send planes into our own towers. Didn't you see that episode of South Park?
Edit: on a side note--Since I live in Tennessee, I am used to hearing people say, "I voted for Bush because I believe in/agree with his morals." How do you even talk to someone who would let that phrase escape their mouth? That's the scary thing about America today.
I mean, really, Bush doesn't need to do anything that drastic to take our rights away. Americans are so fat and lazy that they'd let him do whatever he wants.

That's ridiculous. We need to make it easier for people to get visas into this country. Why the fuck would it matter if two guitar players came over here to do a couple shows? Are they a national threat. I've always detested the people that run this country because this nation has the potential to be great, but this just makes me so angry.

Lets also fail to mention alot of the actual regulations in buying a firearm from a pawn shop. Such as someone like me not being able to go out of state to make a buy like that. You can do that simply because big evil "guns" are not the problem in this country. If anything we need less legislation on guns. If you're going to cite stupidity in such a situation then talk about our failure to renew our automatic weapons ban. Now that was stupid.
I should probably stay away from this thread. Whenever I talk to people outside of NY about 9/11 it always seems like it was a f*cking soap opera to them. People cite all this conspiracy bullshit and fail to realize how disrespectful it is to those who died that day.
I'm also a major advocate for marijuana to be decriminalized. I can sit here and tell you it helps me sleep, but for me to clump that in with a real medicinal cause would be atrocious in my opinion. There are millions of people out there who suffer horrible pain every day and could seriously benefit from medicinal marijuana. I simply believe that laws against it are unjust and pointless.
For your own benefit in the long run you should realize that you are keeping yourself alive. If you are indeed "Clinically depressed" (whatever that means anymore) then any kind of substance abuse will only worsen your depression.
In closing. I've never once in my life been embarassed to be an American. Despite all the thoroughly f*cked up sh*t that we've done throughout history the world would still be a much worse place had we just spent our time sitting on our hands. Now we just need to learn WHEN to sit on our hands, but thats a while other story.

a) He was completely rigamortised around the firearm, squeezing it tightly. This can also be easily chalked up to faulty CS work.
b) There is almost no such thing as a "lethal dose" to a junkie. Especially one with the habit Kurt had. Not literally, but for someone who does a bundle daily its nothing. Basically, a lethal dose of heroin for a non-user is nothing to someone with a serious habit. I did "lethal" doses of drugs numerous times when I was younger (and much more stupid), Im still here to talk about it.

LIGuy: I don't know if your ticket price is being refunded since your show is just postponed but if it is I'm interested in something.
The club I bought my tix through uses Ticketweb. They refunded every cent, including fees and postage! I wonder if the big boys like Ticketmaster would do the same (I doubt it). Just curious to see what your ticket seller does (assuming you get a refund, of course)

They'll be at Bonnaroo, I'm sure they'll find a way. I really don't understand why they are having trouble in the first place. Just because Rodrigo has a similar name to someone who isn't allowed in? If that's the real reason, then I've lost a lot of trust (the little I had) in our government. How long can it possibly take us to figure out that they aren't the same guy!?!
