I must confess that there are several bands that are playing at Bonnaroo that I've heard never of, much less heard. I always look forward to checking out new music, and I enjoy all varieties of music (everything other than new country that sounds like bad pop and most anything that would be on MTV if MTV actually played anything).
Let's say you arranged the Bonnaroo lineup by how well known the performer(s) are, and you looked at the bottom half of the list. What bands or artists that are not that well known would you suggest checking out their show? Who would you consider a must-see or should I say must-hear?
I'd like to check out as much music as possible, and look forward to discovering some new bands (new to me at least). I know that I won't get to see all of the bands playing. Since there seems to be some well versed folk in here, I'm interested in your thoughts.
"Stealing? How could you?! Haven’t you learned anything from that guy who gives those sermons at church? Captain What’s-his-name? We live in a society of laws. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn’t hear anybody laughin’, did you? Except at that guy who made sound effects. Where was I? Oh yeah -- stay out of my booze."
Annuals. They're probably my top tent act to see, at this point in time.
I agree.. saw them in Nov opening for Tapes n Tapes and they kicked it. Six piece band, most members are multi-instrumentalists, keyboards, strings, percussion, and powerful vocals. I still can't believe, given the quality of both their recorded songs and live performance, that no member is over 22. These guys are going to be great (at Bonnaroo and beyond). If you haven't already, check out their CD Be He Me.
definitely check out flight of the conchords...i know they're more comedy than music and they'll most likely be in the comedy tent, but they're hilarious
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
The National is a pretty great act. They have really tight musicianship with thoughtful baritone vocals that make you think a little of early Ian Curtis or Leonard Cohen.
I've heard really positive things about Uncle Earl, a female bluegrass band.
Dr. Dog, Cold War Kids and Black Angels are all sort of up and coming acts in the indie scene.
Dave Bromberg, Richard Thompson, Mavis Staples and T-Bone Burnett are all acts that could easily be overlooked but demand attention. I don't really consider them smaller acts because they've been around for decades producing at a high quality, but they are the kind that twentysomethings might skip to see a very unmemorable hot band of the moment.

also david bromberg and ornette coleman even though they're bigger names, actually legends and some of the best musician's from both folk and jazz, ornette's one of the best sax players i've ever heard

Elvis Perkins in Dearland will be a great show. I saw him last month and he does acoustic stuff, but his show is pretty high-energy and fun to watch! I highly highly recommend him!
Apollo Sunshine will be good The Hold Steady will be a good show (saw them last month as well) but expect the lead singer to be trashed Flight of the Conchords is going to be hilarious
